Parents, teachers, and administrators working together Friday, May 30, 2014 Administration Dear SHS Community Members, As I look back at the school year, I think of all that we have accomplished – parents, teachers, students, counselors, supporting services, and administrators. Together, we have made Springbrook an even better school for our children. Many of our accomplishments have been documented in News from the Brook (NFTB), which we hope you have enjoyed as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. Of course, NFTB would not be possible, if not for the work of parent volunteers. On that note, I would like to acknowledge and express my sincere gratitude to the parent members of the PTSA’s Communication Committee: Ann Coletti, Margaret Smith, Garland DeMarco, Reva Gambrell, and Evelyn Sesay. NFTB is the result of their hard work and dedication to Springbrook High School. There is still much to be done, but I am confident that we will accomplish it together. In other news, please be advised that due to graduation, school will not be in session on Monday, June 2nd. Students who are graduating MUST be at DAR Constitution Hall by 9:00 a.m. All of their guests, including children, must have a ticket to enter. Please click here for more specific information on graduation. We want to let you know that summer assignments are being posted on our website. These assignments are due when students return to school in the fall. A finalized list will be posted by Tuesday, June 3rd. You can view the summer assignments list here. 1 If your child is going to be a senior next year, please spend some time this summer researching SAT and ACT prep courses, visiting colleges, and helping your child to start the college application process. Also, the final report card of the year will be sent home on June 19th. If you have had an address change, please notify our school registrar so that you can receive final grades for your child. Finally, since this is the last issue of NFTB, I would like to take a moment to congratulate scholarship and award winners who were honored at our May 8th ceremony. (For a list of award recipients, please see page 15.) I hope you have found NFTB both informative and enjoyable. I wish you and your family a wonderful and safe summer. Sincerely, Daniel E. We also can take pride in being recognized as a Platinum Award winner at this year’s MCCPTA Presidents and Principals dinner for increasing our membership by over 85%. 3 Because of your dedicated support of Springbrook PTSA, we were able to: welcome incoming 9th graders with an ice cream social; show our staff they are appreciated by providing welcome back breakfasts and a back-to-school night dinner; facilitate the launch of the school’s newsletter, News from the Brook; award $2500 in grant money to programs in art, science, journalism, music and leadership development; throw an outstanding After Prom party to keep our students safe on Prom Night ; and deliver budget testimony to emphasize Springbrook’s capital improvement and operating program needs. The After-Prom Committee is pleased to announce that the 2014 After-Prom event was a smashing success! For the 2nd year in a row, the White Oak Community Center proved to be the perfect venue for our event. Students enjoyed everything from the thrill of the “Vertical Rush” and other giant inflatables, to the exhilaration of playing laser tag, casino games and so much more. They received stunning airbrush tattoos, posed for portraits by caricaturists, and smiled for photo booth snapshots taken with their friends. They were hypnotized, wowed by amazing magic tricks, and treated to whimsical balloon animals. And they were showered with prizes: gift cards, goodie bags, cash, and more gift cards! They feasted on delicious empanadas, chicken wings, subs, pizza, homemade desserts, Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt and more, all while listening to the tunes that they love. They relaxed with their friends on comfy couches and laughed and chatted and enjoyed this special time together. And most of all, our kids STAYED SAFE on one of the riskiest nights of a high school student’s life: Prom night. The After-Prom Committee thanks you for supporting our fundraising efforts throughout the year, for volunteering at After-Prom, and for donating food and other needed items. We could not have done any of this without the support of this wonderful community. We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge contributions made by some local businesses & community groups: the Hillandale Citizen’s Association, the Stonegate Citizen’s Association, Top Hits DJ - Nicole Neale, Morton’s Towing Service, M. Russell Hausman (hypnotist), Capital One Bank (Colesville branch), and the Bagelry. We have had to push our completion date and ceremony until either the last week of school or the opening of the next academic year. We are most grateful to the staff and community of Springbrook High School for donations of money, bottled water, painting supplies, and snacks/food. In fact, last Friday, May, 23, 2014, eight students worked at Springbrook until 7:00 pm drawing and painting, so it was so nice to nourish and energize them with some pizza and drinks. If you would like to donate to the “Tear Down Your Walls” mural project, please see Jonathan Mann in Room B-110, or Mary Neumann at the school’s bank. Work will resume on the “Tear Down Your Walls” large-scale mural project in the Springbrook back parking lot, which has been delayed by poor weather. Expected completion is either by end of this school year, or the beginning of the next one. The “Tear Down Your Wall” message encourages students to eliminate internal barriers that impede their ability to learn. When they can tear down their wall, they can open their minds to endless possibilities, and receive the most from their Springbrook education. 11 Science Department UPDATED INFORMATION!!!! The casting call is open to male and female teens between 14 and 18 years of age enrolled in a Montgomery County high school. The deadline for submission is June 19. Why? Each year, there are more than 400 crashes involving pedestrians on Montgomery County roadways. Safe Kids Worldwide tells us that high-school age students are particularly at risk. Teenagers ages 15 through 19 make up half of all underage pedestrian fatalities, twice the death rate of younger children. Many teens cross the street while distracted by texting, handheld games, music, phone conversations, and other hazardous activities. Have you seen these “Tired Faces” ads? That’s why Montgomery County We need new faces! Department of Transportation is teaming up with Montgomery County Public Schools to create a campaign to raise awareness of the risks of distracted walking and other dangerous pedestrian behaviors. As part of the campaign, we are creating a toolkit with how-to resources and support materials to make pedestrian safety education engaging and easy to implement. Please see go to www.WalkYourWay.org for more details. 25 News from the Brook This issue is the FINAL publication for this school year. Thank you to all the wonderful Springbrook staff and administrators who have been contributing articles all year. This partnership would not have been possible without your time, effort and commitment to keeping parents and the Springbrook community well-informed. The SHS PTSA Communications Committee would especially like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Assistant Principal Daniel Garcia for his excellent collaboration and his ongoing commitment and dedication to improving communications at Springbrook. The PTSA would like to gather your input to help us plan for next year. To that end, we will be sending out a short survey to get your feedback. Please help us by taking a moment to reply to the survey so that we can best meet the needs of our parent community. Your answers will help us to improve our newsletter and the work of our committees. Please be on the lookout for the email. We want to hear from you and we greatly appreciate your help with this effort! News from the Brook, point of contact: [email protected] 26
