Administration
Dear Parents/Guardians:
The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be administered to all 10th and 11th grade students at
Springbrook High School on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. On this day, all 9th, 10th
and 11th grade students must attend their first period class which runs from 7:25 to 8:10
a.m. The testing period will begin at 8:15 a.m. and will last until 11:30 a.m. Students
should bring two sharpened #2 pencils and an eraser. Although no questions require
the use of a calculator, students are strongly encouraged to bring an approved
calculator. Ninth grade students who are interested in taking the test can register
between September 29th and October 8th by paying a $14 fee to the school bank. All 9th
grade students will be provided PSAT registration forms in their English classes. Ninth
grade students who do not register for the test will attend four workshops designed to
help with their transition into high school. Twelfth grade students are not eligible to take
the test and will not have to report to school until 11:30 a.m. Twelfth grade students who
report to school before 11:30 a.m. will be directed to a study hall session in the media
center.
The PSAT is administered once each year and is an important first step in making
college plans. The structure of the test is similar to that of the SAT I. The test measures
critical reading, math problem-solving, and writing skills. Scores and interpretive
booklets will be distributed at school by mid-January. It is important to note that a
makeup day will not be offered at Springbrook High School for the PSAT, therefore ontime student attendance in VERY important on the day of the test.
Why does MCPS and Springbrook High School pay for 10th and 11th grade
students to take the PSAT?
In an effort to improve students’ preparation for college level studies, Montgomery
County Public Schools will pay the test administration fee for all 10 th grade students.
Springbrook High School will cover the cost of the test for all 11thgrade students. The
PSAT provides:
 Feedback on academic performance & suggestions on how to improve
 Preparation for the SAT
 Information from colleges and universities through the Student Search
Service
 A free personalized online college planning kit based on test results
 A true measure of a student’s college readiness
 A true measure (predictor) of how a student will perform in future AP or IB
courses.
 Opportunities for 11th grade students to earn scholarships and academic
recognition—The PSAT is also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
(NMSQT).
For more information we encourage you to visit the College Board’s website at
https://www.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt where you can find a link to the
Official Student Guide to the PSAT that will help your child prepare for the test.
If you have any questions about the upcoming PSAT administration, we encourage you
to contact your child’s counselor at 301-989-5710.

The International Baccalaureate Middle
Years Programme (MYP)
Welcome Parents! The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) teaches your children tools
for lifelong learning and fosters responsible attitudes that help them discover how to use
what they learn to take principled action. The IB MYP’s focus on independent learning
makes it the ideal preparation for the IB Diploma Programme (DP). Teachers are hard
at work planning lessons that will engage your children and put them at the center of the
learning. We focus not just on what your child should know and be able to do but also
how best they learn. We want them to be able to evaluate information critically and
apply knowledge in complex, unfamiliar situations.
New to 9th grade parents is our IB MYP Progress Report that will come out at the end of
each semester. This report will tell you how your child is doing in light of the rigorous
learning objectives set forth by the International Baccalaureate Organization. New to
10th grade is our IB MYP capstone project called the MYP Personal Project. You will
see this on your child’s course card. It is listed as MYP Research Sem. I will be
meeting with 10th grade students at the end of September through NSL classes to
explain the process. All 10th grade students are expected to participate.
We are off to a spectacular year! Thank you for sending your children to Springbrook!
Point of contact: John Weinshel, IB MYP Coordinator, [email protected]
The IB MYP comprises rigorous learning objectives: • a student-centered approach to teaching
• international perspectives
• concern for the whole child
• sustained teaching and learning in
more than one language
• a focus on learning how to learn• the development of flexible thinking
that prepares students to evaluate information critically and apply knowledge in complex, unfamiliar
situations.

BIG part of our fundraising dollars, and you can help by volunteering, even if just once!

17 MCPS Seniors Named National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists
Seventeen Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) seniors have been selected as
semifinalists in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship competition. The
scholarship program, administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation,
recognizes academically promising African American students across the nation and
awards college scholarships to hundreds of students each year.
More than 160,000 students requested consideration for the National Achievement
Scholarship Program and 1,600 were named as semifinalists. Semifinalists are chosen
based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their junior year. Approximately 80 percent of
the semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level and more than half of the
finalists will be awarded with scholarships next spring.
