Dear SHS Community:
PSAT Administration
The PSAT will be administered to all 10th and 11th grade students at Springbrook High School
on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. On this day, all 9th, 10th and 11th grade students must
attend their first period class which starts at 7:25 a.m. The testing period will begin at 8:30 a.m.
and will last until 11:30 a.m. Students should bring two sharpened #2 pencils and an
eraser. Although no questions require the use of a calculator, students are strongly encouraged
to bring an approved calculator.
Twelfth grade students are not eligible to take the test and will not have to report to school until
11:30 a.m. Twelfth grade students who report to school before 11:30 a.m. will be directed to a
study hall session in the media center.

to the PSAT that will help your child prepare for the test.
We want students to get a score of 145 or higher on the PSAT because it predicts not only how
a student will perform on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) but also predicts how a student will
perform in AP and IB classes. As we all know, a rigorous high school program is the number
one identifier of college success. The PSAT is also used to identify students for specific
scholarship opportunities such as the National Merit Scholarship and the National Achievement
Scholarship. If you have any questions about the upcoming PSAT administration, we

SAT Scores Rise for MCPS Class of 2014
MCPS graduates outperform the state and the nation
The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Class of 2014 earned a combined
average SAT score of 1650, a two-point increase over the previous year and
significantly higher than graduates from across the state of Maryland and the nation.
The district’s scores were bolstered by significant gains among African American and
Hispanic graduates, with scores increasing six points and 10 points, respectively.
SAT participation in MCPS remained high, with 69 percent of graduates taking the
college entrance examination, the same percentage as the previous year.
“Overall, our students are performing very well on the SAT and are demonstrating their
readiness for success in college and careers. I want to congratulate our students and
staff on these outstanding results,” said Phil Kauffman, president of the Montgomery
County Board of Education. “We must continue our work to ensure that all children
receive an education that prepares them for success today and in the future.”
The gains in MCPS scores are happening as the state and the nation saw an overall
decrease in average SAT scores. In Maryland, the Class of 2014 earned a combined
average SAT score of 1468, which is down 15 points from the previous year. Nationally,
2014 graduates scored 1497 on the SAT, a drop of one point. Since 2011, the
combined average SAT score of MCPS graduates has increased by 13 points, while
scores have declined for graduates statewide (-24 points) and nationwide (-3 points).
“The SAT is an important indicator of a student’s college readiness, and MCPS
graduates are clearly outperforming their peers across the state and the nation in this
area,” said Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr. “In order to continue this
progress, we must redouble on our efforts to make sure every student in MCPS
graduates ready for college and the workplace.”
The SAT college entrance exam includes three sections—critical reading, mathematics,
and writing—with each section worth 800 points. The MCPS Class of 2014 earned an
average score of 547 on the critical reading section, 560 on the math section, and 542
on the writing section.
African American and Hispanic graduates in the MCPS Class of 2014 made significant
gains on the SAT, and outperformed their peers in Maryland and across the nation.
Sixty-three (63) percent of African American MCPS graduates took the SAT—an
increase of nearly two percentage points. African American graduates in MCPS scored
an average of 1403 on the exam, a one-year increase of six points and significantly
higher than their peers in the state (1246) and the nation (1278).
Among 2014 Hispanic graduates in MCPS, 47 percent took the SAT, which is the same
as in 2013, and the average score jumped 10 points to 1461. This is significantly higher
than the score for the state (1374) and the nation (1353).
From 2013 to 2014, the gap in performance between MCPS White and AfricanAmerican students narrowed by eight points while the gap between White and Hispanic
students narrowed by 12 points. However, White MCPS graduates students scored

1766 on the SAT, which is still significantly higher than African American and Hispanic
students.
“We made some progress in narrowing the achievement gap this year, and that is good
news,” Dr. Starr said. “However, we must recognize that the gaps are still too large and
we have a lot of work to do in order to ensure all students are prepared to thrive in their
future.”
Seven MCPS high schools saw a one-year increase in both SAT participation and
combined average score—Albert Einstein, Col. Zadok Magruder, Poolesville, Quince
Orchard, Seneca Valley, Springbrook, and Wheaton. Among other highlights of school
performance:
Twelve of the 25 MCPS high schools saw one-year gains in their average combined
score, with the largest increases at Springbrook (+88 points), Wheaton (+55 points),
Montgomery Blair (+41 points), James Hubert Blake (+37 points), and Poolesville (+34
points).
Fourteen MCPS high schools had a one-year increase in scores for Hispanic graduates,
with the largest increases at Thomas S. Wootton (+155 points), Walter Johnson (+76
points), Paint Branch (+75 points), Wheaton (+64 points), and Springbrook (+64 points).
Seven high schools saw an increase in both SAT participation and performance for
Hispanic graduates—Damascus, Col. Zadok Magruder, Paint Branch, Quince Orchard,
Springbrook, Wheaton, and Thomas S. Wootton.

On another note, MCPS has designated Monday, October 13th as a day for schools to
hold open houses. This is a great opportunity for parents and guardians to observe
their children in the classroom, learn more about the school’s programs and meet
school staff. Please save the date and join us!

administrator, as she gets ready to run the Steamtown Marathon in Scranton, PA on

Cluster Coordinators needed
What is a Cluster Coordinator?
They serve as liaisons to MCCPTA and MCPS for the schools in their cluster, which
include their high school and all of its feeder schools.
Hierarchically, they are the next level up from the local PTA President and are members
of the Board of Directors of the MCCPTA.
They work closely with the Area Vice President. (The Northeast Consortium AVP
coordinates the Springbrook, Paint Branch, Blake and Sherwood clusters.)
Most importantly, CCs advocate for the schools in their cluster by testifying before the
Board of Education and the County Council several times per year.

Volunteer Opportunity – Homecoming Dance – October 25, 2014
We are looking for volunteers to help with the coat-check room. If you are interested,

After-Prom News
Thanks to all parents, school staff and friends for supporting our mum and pansy sale.

Counseling Department
Counselors are continuing to work on college recommendation letters for our 12th grade
students. It is important that students bring in the following to the counseling
department at least 1 month prior to the due date for their application: signed release of
information form, brag sheet and a completed transcript request form accompanied by
the $5.00 transcript fee.
We are also beginning to plan for our articulation process and are beginning to meet
with our private school and middle school students to share the special programs at
Springbrook High School, such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
and the National Academy of Information Technology program.
Parent of seniors: The College & Career Center has many scholarships available.
Seniors should be visiting the College & Career Center on a regular basis to hear from
college representatives and to learn about the many scholarships that are available.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma
Programme (IBDP)
IB DP Registrations
All juniors and seniors who will be examining in subjects for the May 2015 session have
been registered with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It is expected
that students taking an IB DP subject will complete all assessments pieces for the
course. Invoices listing all fees, total costs, and payment options should be arriving in
the mail. Current fees set by the IBO: Registration fee: $160 (one-time fee for
students pursuing the IB Diploma); Subject Fee: $110/subject; Core Fee: Theory of
Knowledge - $43; Extended Essay - $85; CAS - $10. Payment will be due by October
27, 2014. The registration fee is not refundable after November 15, 2014. If you have

IB Psychology Students Dissect Brains
IB Psychology students dissected their own sheep brain last week to help visualize the
locations of the different parts of the brain. While much smaller than a human brain
(sheep are not that intelligent), students were able to identify the parts of the brain that
control, coordinate, and facilitate all necessary functions of us higher functioning
mammals. Thanks go out to the science department and Mrs. Moore for helping to
coordinate the use of the science labs and equipment.
Extended Essays
All seniors pursuing the IB Diploma are working on revisions of the extended essays.
Working through their Theory of Knowledge class and with a supervisor, students spent
most of the second semester of their junior year choosing a topic, developing an
appropriate research question, conducting research, selecting relevant information,
organizing, outlining and completing a draft of their paper. Final drafts are due by
December 19, 2014.

The International Baccalaureate Middle
Years Programme (MYP)
IB MYP Personal Projects
We are well on our way to having successful Personal Projects. The Personal Project is
a significant student-directed inquiry produced over an extended period, completed
during the sophomore year. The personal nature of the project is important; students
should base their project around a topic that motivates and interests them. Project
Proposals were due Oct. 3. Please check the Edline page for MYP Research Seminar
if you have a 10th grader.
Assessment in the IB MYP Continues
Teachers organize continuous assessment over the course of the MYP Programme,
grade 9 and grade 10, according to specified assessment criteria that correspond to
the aims and objectives for each subject group that were shared with parents by
teachers at Back to School Night. IB MYP Progress Reports will be handed out at the
end of the first semester and second semester.

The IB MYP comprises rigorous learning objectives:
• a student-centered approach to teaching • international perspectives
• concern for the whole child
• sustained teaching and learning in more than one language • a focus on learning how to learn

complex, unfamiliar situations.
Academy of Information Technology
The Academy of Information Technology (“AOIT”) is a four year program which is
offered to our students interested in computer programming, computer maintenance
and LAN Management.
Membership in the Academy introduces students to the broad career opportunities in
today’s digital workforce and, in the process, equips them with the personal, analytical,
technical and communications skills they need to thrive.
A member program of the National Academy Foundation (www.naf.org), the AOIT
operates as a “school within a school.” This 4-year program augments the standard
curricula. In addition to their required courses, the AOIT students take one or 2
specialized courses each semester, a college-level course their junior and/or senior
year, and participate in a paid internship. Each student who successfully completes an
AOIT strand is eligible to apply for nationally recognized industry certifications and
graduates with college credit.

Springbrook Women in Technology
The Springbrook Women in Technology club (SWIT) was started 6 years ago with the
purpose of guiding our women interested in technology and to have fun and make
friends. We have guest speakers, learn new types of technology and applications, and
participate in contests and scholarship opportunities. We meet on Mondays during
lunch and welcome all Springbrook women.

Mark your calendars! The 2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar will take place on Saturday,
November 22 from 9:00am-2:00pm in our cafeteria. This is the major fall fundraising
event for the staff of the school’s newspaper, The Blueprint. Vendor tables are $20

Science Department
A New Cold Frame Greenhouse Comes to Springbrook!
Eagle Scout candidate Patrick Regan Fanelli led fellow troop members and Green
Team members in a valuable lesson on rethinking trash! This team of over 30 students
and adults repurposed over fifteen hundred plastic bottles into a functional usable cold
frame greenhouse. The students created an aesthetically pleasing greenhouse with a
monogrammed side wall “SB” demonstrating their creativity and excellent problem
solving skills as they engineered this structure from concept to reality. This greenhouse
will be tested for authentic functionality by our own second year horticulture students as
they explore the New Certified Professional Horticulture Program offered at
Springbrook. These students are currently enrolled in plant production, the second year
course of this program completer learning valuable growing techniques within an urban
environment. The following students and adults answered the call, gave of their free
time and made this conceptual greenhouse a reality under the supervision of Mr.
Decker, executed flawlessly with Patrick’s excellent project managerial skills creating
this greenhouse: Jack Barnes, Aaron Bloom, Jackson Darby, Alex Do, Bill Fanelli,
Noelle Flaherty, Chris Gamarro, Maxwell Hansburry, Jitesh Hemmani, Jack Hino, Daniel

IAPS Boat Race
On November 12 from 11am-1pm we will be at MLK Aquatics Center to race cardboard
boats. The students will have 10 days to build the boats. These boats will hold 2
students each and they will be racing the boats.

4th Annual Drum Line Competition and Showcase
The Springbrook High School Instrumental Music Department will host its 4th Annual
Drum Line Competition and Showcase on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 4pm in the
school gymnasium. The competition will feature Drum Lines from Montgomery County,
Prince George’s County and the District of Columbia, and will Showcase Bowie State
University, Cheyney University and Lincoln University’s Drum Lines. Come out and
enjoy watching these exciting Drum Lines battle for bragging rights and for the top
award as the best Drum Line in the Washington Metro area!
Tickets can be purchased at the gate on the day of the event. Student admission is $5
and adult admission is $10. There will be plenty of good food, fun and great
entertainment during the event. See you there! The Music Boosters are seeking

Support Springbrook Musicians - Get Involved with the Music Boosters!
The Music Program/Boosters are hard at work performing for Springbrook High School
and community and preparing for upcoming events. Every student participating in the
music program has many activities throughout the year to enrich their musical
experience. To all parents of the Music Program, please contact us using the email
below. We continue our work to prepare for all the events throughout this school year.
Also, please plan to attend the Music Boosters meetings on the 1st Tuesday of every
month at 7pm (note the next one is November 11 since November 4 is Election Day.)

The Music program is filled with exciting events as well as opportunities to help. Please

Claire's Gourmet: As many of you know, the Claire's Gourmet fundraiser is
complete and we're awaiting on the delivery of the items for distribution.
o We will need help from students and parents when the items arrive. As
most (if not all) items are frozen it becomes critical that everyone picks up
their orders on time. I will send out an email to everyone when this is
going to happen.
o As was advertised there was a raffle to award a student for their efforts
with a $100.00 credit toward their trip costs (Memphis 2015). In total there
were 12 students who sold 10 or more items and had an opportunity to
win. The raffle was held at the October 7 Boosters meeting.
Congratulations to Michael Dennis for winning this raffle!
o There was also another award for the student with the most sales during
this campaign. This award is $100.00 as well toward their Memphis trip
costs. Please commend Ms. Hayli Johnson for her efforts! She sold more
items than anyone else who participated.

Citrus Sale Fundraiser: Starting October 8 all the students in the music program
have another opportunity to earn money towards their spring trip. Please take a
look at the packets they received and see where you and your student can
capitalize on this sale. The campaign will end on October 27 in order to meet the
deadline for delivery prior to Thanksgiving.

Car Wash Fundraiser: On Saturday, October 11 the Music Program will have a
car wash at the Sandy Spring Bank on New Hampshire Avenue from 12:30-4pm.
Please let your neighbors know; we can use all the support possible.

Ledo Pizza night: The music program has partnered with Ledo Pizza on
Wednesday, October 22. This is a great opportunity to show your support for the
music program while feeding the family. More details will be forthcoming.

Drum Line Competition: One of the most significant events the Boosters
support/facilitate is the Annual Drum Line Competition. While this event is held in
December, there is a significant work effort that is just around the corner. It is an
event that focuses on community engagement while providing a very entertaining
show for all who attend. If you are a student who would like to earn SSL hours

football games. An anonymous donor has offered to match any money the Boosters
Club raises this fall through concession and other sales, so your support NOW will
double our fundraising dollars and move us much closer to our $50,000 goal.

Take Montgomery College Courses at Springbrook
Seniors with a 2.75 GPA or Juniors with a 3.0 GPA are eligible to enroll in a college
course here at Springbrook. The courses below are offered. Please come learn more
and apply on Thursday, October 16 at 12:00 noon in E202. Parents invited.
CS 210: Computer Security – 3 semester hours
Course Description: Surveys major topics in assessment and development of security
procedures for a variety of computer systems. The course emphasizes security needs,
risk assessment, and practical measures for security management. Topics include
Internet and Web security, LAN security, protection of personal computers, physical
security, hardware and software protection and products, virus countermeasures, and
the human aspects of computer security. PREREQUISITE: any of these Springbrook
High School courses: Computer Science I, Design Technology Solutions, Introduction
to Engineering Design and consent of Montgomery College.
CA 190: Intro to Game and Simulation – 4 semester hours
Covers the gaming industry, careers, and the basic terminology. Topics include history
of gaming; an industry overview; career paths, the state of the job market, and skills
needed for success in various jobs; genres and platforms; societal issues; the study of
games and "play"; the future of gaming; development of design, teamwork, business,
and production skills.
PL 180: Morality and Contemporary Law – 3 semester hours
An examination of some social issues that seem to be of current interest from the
legal/ethical viewpoint, e.g., privacy, crime and punishment, civil and human rights,
victimless crimes, police and court practice, sexual and medical practice, freedom and
authority. An attempt will be made to view these contemporary problems in a historical
perspective. The student is encouraged and expected to know facts, think logically, and
develop an independent sense of critical judgment.
Sutdents Showcase “Dependable Strengths”
Students in CCRD (College, Career Research and Development) presented their
Dependable Strengths in a showcase. Participants use the knowledge of their
uncovered skills to make further education, training and career decision, to reduce the
stress in their lives and to focus on being productive in positive ways. Their new
wisdom teaches them to “find out what you did right, so you can be sure to do it again”.

Dear Friends,
We're less than 10 days away from
Ready for Tomorrow: Education and Workforce
Summit. This exciting event is on Saturday, October 18th
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the White Oak Community
Recreation Center.
People have asked me, "why are you hosting this summit?"
It's simple: Closing the Academic Achievement Gap and
preparing our young people for the jobs of the future is
an economic imperative for our nation.
Closing the achievement gap is often discussed in moralistic
terms--they say it is the "civil rights issue of our time." While
promoting social equality is an important goal, the reality is
that this country will not succeed unless our students today
have the education they need for the jobs of tomorrow.
Since the majority of students now entering kindergarten and
first grade are of color, eliminating the academic achievement gap and scaling up successful workforce development
programs is more important than ever. I hope you'll read a piece I recently wrote about this topic on my blog.

Opportunities at Montgomery County Board of Elections (“BOE”)
The BOE is recruiting voters to work the polls on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4,
and bilingual voters to work at early voting centers and at polling places on Early Voting,
October 23-30 and Election Day, Tuesday, November 4.
The BOE also needs Student Volunteers (grades 16-12) to participate in its “Future
Vote'” Program and a variety of activities before Election Day. This is a great
opportunity for students to get involved in the democratic process and earn SSL hours.

Northwood's Cross-Country Teams Host a Series of Races for Runners from
Elementary School Through Any Age this Saturday, October 11
This is the 6th annual event and it has become a great community event for all of the
consortia schools. There will be races for the 8 MCPS Consortia high school teams that
will bring over 200 athletes to compete on Northwood’s course, FREE races for
elementary- and middle school-aged runners, as well as an open 5K for anybody to run.

The Highwood Theatre is a local theatre company in downtown Silver Spring which
offers a variety of student programs, as well as a professional season of productions:

Take Kaplan’'s practice test to help you decide! This is proctored like an actual test,
except your score won't go on record! Parents of 9th graders -- this a great time to start
your child taking practice tests – it will help them get used to the test and alleviate
anxiety later when the test really counts! Students from all high schools are welcome!
