Counseling Department
Counseling News
Counselors met with all of the 9th grade students on Wednesday, October 15 as part of
the special program we hosted for them on PSAT day. Students learned how “9th
Grade Counts”. We reviewed the graduation requirements and how everything that
occurs from now on has an impact on the college admissions process. We reviewed
the importance of maintaining a high grade point average and shared with students the
options available when a student fails a class since students do not repeat courses
during the instructional day. Students instead take the course over in either summer
school or high school plus. Students learned the credit requirements for being
promoted to 10th grade and beyond.
We recently visited with 8th grade students from our feeder schools who have a GPA of
3.0 or higher, currently enrolled in a world language course and who are currently
enrolled in Honors Geometry or a higher math class. We talked with each group of
students and explained our two biggest programs to them: the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the National Academy of Information
4
Technology (AOIT). Students who attended these information sessions received a
Springbrook T-shirt which was designed by one of our AOIT students.
We have the opportunity to submit the names of needy families for holiday baskets for
the Thanksgiving and December holidays. If you are in need of assistance, please
contact your child’s counselor. All information will be kept confidential.
We have begun the master scheduling and articulation process for the 2015-2016
school year and we are working with resource teachers to identify the courses to be
taught next year. Current Springbrook students will receive their registration forms
earlier this year and will be able to register for courses in early January.
The College and Career Center has many scholarships available. Seniors should be
visiting the Career Center on a regular basis to hear from college representatives and to

The International Baccalaureate Diploma
Programme (IBDP)
IB DP Registrations
All juniors and seniors who will be examining in subjects for the May 2015 session have
been registered with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It is expected
that students taking an IB DP subject will complete all assessments pieces for the
course. Invoices listing all fees, total costs, and payment options should have arrived in
the mail. Current fees set by the IBO: Registration fee: $160 (one-time fee for
students pursuing the IB Diploma); Subject Fee: $110/subject; Core Fee: Theory of
Knowledge - $43; Extended Essay - $85; CAS - $10. Payment will be due by October
27, 2014. The registration fee is not refundable after November 15, 2014. If you have
any questions, please contact me.
IB Science Projects
IB Biology and IB Chemistry students spent the day on October 10 evaluating the health
of the Northwest Branch behind Springbrook. Students develop hypotheses and plans
to examine the stream’s health based upon its chemistry and diversity of vertebrate and
invertebrate life. Groups of students are now analyzing their data and will produce
presentations showing how well their hypotheses and experimental plans worked.
IB Physics, IB Design Technology and IB Computer Science students spent the day on
October 16 planning and designing catapults. CAD software is used to design each
part of the catapult, with some pieces printed on our 3D printer and other parts
manufactured using more traditional materials (wood, nails, screws, etc.) The catapult
design is focused on accuracy and distance. Some of the designs will be built and
tested using an apple as the payload. October 24 will be used for the construction and
testing of the catapults. Using object tracking software, videos of the catapults in action
will determine the effectiveness of the constructed designs.
The Group 4 project is a compulsory project that encourages students to appreciate the
environmental, social and ethical implications of science. This exercise is collaborative
and interdisciplinary and provides an opportunity for students to explore scientific
solutions to global questions.
Extended Essays
All seniors pursuing the IB Diploma are working on revisions of the extended essays.
Working through their Theory of Knowledge class and with a supervisor, students spent
7
most of the second semester of their junior year choosing a topic, developing an
appropriate research question, conducting research, selecting relevant information,
organizing, outlining and completing a draft of their paper. Final drafts are due by
December 19, 2014.

The International Baccalaureate Middle
Years Programme (MYP)
First teaching of Enhanced Middle Years Programme
The Hague (September 1, 2014) – The International Baccalaureate (IB) this month
launches its newly reviewed Middle Years Programme (MYP) for first teaching in IB
World Schools around the world.
Evolution of the IB Middle Years Programme
Since 1994, IB World Schools have adopted the MYP as a means of providing an
education that recognizes the developmental needs of students aged 11 to 16.
The MYP is part of a sequence of programmes - the Primary Years Programme (PYP),
the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Careerrelated Certificate (IBCC), that offers students a continuous international educational
experience from early childhood to pre-university age. Following an extensive review
that included educational experts and IB educators from over 100 pilot schools in 46
countries, the MYP has undergone a rigorous process of improvement that builds on the
programme’s strengths and global success. “The re-development of the MYP
curriculum has been an enormously collaborative effort” says Robert Harrison, Head of
MYP Development, “and we’d like to thank everyone involved for dedicating their time
and expertise to this exciting framework of learning that encourages students to become
creative, critical and reflective thinkers. We look forward to an exciting and successful
journey ahead for all MYP schools, educators and, of course, students.”
Point of contact: John Weinshel, IB MYP Coordinator, [email protected]
The IB MYP comprises rigorous learning objectives:
• a student-centered approach to teaching • international perspectives
• concern for the whole child
• sustained teaching and learning in more than one language • a focus on learning how to learn
• the development of flexible thinking that prepares students to evaluate information critically and apply knowledge in
complex, unfamiliar situations.

Academy of Information Technology
Springbrook Becomes Part of the Lenovo Scholar Network!
Springbrook’s Advanced Computer Programming students have been accepted to be
part of the first cohort of National Academy Foundation (NAF) academies in the Lenovo
Scholar Network. Springbrook is one of 10 schools in the entire country to be selected
for this opportunity.
Springbrook students will participate in mobile app and entrepreneurship courses
intended for the project-based competition. The competition tasks students to design and
develop a mobile app and business plan for taking the app to market, which measures
critical college and career readiness skills.
Lenovo will provide Springbrook with laptops and tablet devices for each 2-person team
to aid the students and teachers in implementing the curriculum. The products include
PC devices for student development and coding collaboration. The Lenovo tablet
devices will be used for the testing and viability of the mobile app. These Lenovo
devices will also enable the students to develop their marketing plans and strategies to
bring the winning apps to market.
Students will receive a “Lenovo App Scholar” badge of distinction, recognizing their
accomplishments in technology, business management, entrepreneurship and product
development. In addition, a select number of students will be recognized at NAF as the
mobile app development competition winners for most innovative app at NAF Next!,
NAF’s signature annual conference this summer in California.
“Lenovo is helping students succeed in the 21st century workplace by nurturing their
innate digital skills,” said Karen Ondrick, chief connector, Lenovo. “Participants in the
Lenovo Scholar Network will be stimulated by a creative and challenging curriculum,
and teachers will have Lenovo tools necessary to be mentors and encourage students’
interest in pursuing a career in STEM.”
“With the success of our 2012 pilot program, we saw the excitement and motivation
students experience when they have access to professional development support and
innovative technology,” said JD Hoye, president, NAF. “Projects like the Lenovo Scholar
Network are essential to NAF’s mission and programming, and with the support of
Lenovo and MIT’s faculty and technology developers, we look forward to cultivating the
next generation of scientists, developers and innovators.”
“The Lenovo Scholar Network mobile app development program gives high school
students a real-world learning opportunity that closely aligns with the responsibilities
expected from both colleges and universities, and future employers,” said Josh
Sheldon, director of strategic programs, MIT App Inventor. “By using MIT App Inventor,
10
along with curriculum and training from Lenovo and NAF, these students will emerge as
ideal candidates when they enter college and the workforce.”

Jonathan Mann, Art Department Resource Teacher, presented his paper: The
Visual Activist: A Collective Artistic and Pedagogical Practice, at the Maryland State Art
Education Conference on Friday, October 17. The presentation was received
enthusiastically. In attendance were a former student, Aselin Land, Class of ’08, and
former Springbrook teacher Isabel Grimann, both of whom won awards for First Year
MCPS Art Teacher and for MCPS High School Teacher of the year, respectively.
Kalyani (Kelly) Bezwada was a culinary guest presenter for Lisa Seid’s Hospitality
Management Program on October 17. She prepared, “Chole (Chana) Masala” an
aromatic, delicious recipe from India. An Admissions Representative from Johnson &
Wales University will be coming to her classes to share information about their culinary
program on October 21. Mrs. Seid is also providing ServSafe training to all of her
Hospitality Management students. ServSafe is a food and beverage safety training
and certificate program administered by the National Restaurant Association. The
program is accredited by ANSI and the Conference for Food Protection. Sanitation
certification is required by most restaurants as a basic credential for their management
staff.
On October 14 students in the Springbrook Choir and The Springbrook Latino
Dance Club were taken to the Department of Justice by teachers Emily Donaldson,
Brenda Berrara, and administrator Nikki Morales for the 2014 Hispanic Heritage
Month Observance Program in Washington, DC in The Great Hall, Robert F. Kennedy
Main Justice Building. The Springbrook Choir sang the National Anthem giving the
audience a spell-binding rendition unlike any they had ever heard, said some of the
dignitaries to Ms. Morales. Also noted was the outstanding performances of the Latino
Dance Club and the guitar solo by Andrea Garcia. Springbrook and Wilson High
Schools were the only ones chosen to present for this event. Our Springbrook team
was well prepared, but they didn’t realize how hugely important the event would be.
The audience was comprised of top-level Federal Government employees in the
Obama Administration and Department of Justice. The keynote speaker was Armando
O. Bonilla, Associate Deputy Attorney General. Please see the photo taken at the event
