Administration
Dear SHS Community,
We hope that you are enjoying your spring break with your friends and family. As we look back
at our recent accomplishments, we find that there is much to celebrate: We had an incredibly
successful production of High School Musical. We had a very successful, second annual,
alumni day. Our band traveled to The Blues City Classic in Memphis, TN where they received
Superior & Outstanding ratings. Our Concert Choir students traveled to Disney in Florida where
they earned a Superior rating. Our boys varsity basketball team claimed the 4A North Region
championship for the State of Maryland. We are projecting a tremendous increase in student
enrollment in AP and IB courses for next year. This is a positive trend because we recently
found out that in 2014 Springbrook was one of eight MCPS schools to experience an increase in
participation in AP exams among Latino and African American students and was one of only two
MCPS schools to experience an increase in AP performance among Latino and African
American students. This means that more and more of our students will be college ready in the
years to come. We are so proud of what our students have accomplished and so incredibly
grateful to the parents and staff members who support them in their endeavors.

Senior Announcements
Senior Farewell Picnic Needs Volunteers
On May 29 the Class of 2015 will be rehearsing for graduation. Rehearsal will begin at
7:30 a.m. Afterwards, there will be a “Farewell Picnic” at the football stadium. This will
be their last opportunity to be together as a class to socialize and bond. We really need
parents to help. We need volunteers to prepare and serve hotdogs and hamburgers. If
you are unable to volunteer, you can still help by donating desserts, cases of water or
sodas. If you are interested in donating or are available to help at the picnic please
contact Ms. Greger at [email protected] or call (301) 989-5710. Thank
you!
Counseling Department
Parents and students will be receiving letters in the mail by April 20 which will
include all of the course registrations for next year. If you are in disagreement with the
course registrations you will have until April 30 to make changes. After April 30 the
schedules will be locked in and no changes will be made. It is important that you review
4
the course registration with your child to ensure accuracy. Please note that all students
registered for AP and IB classes are expected to take the test at the end of the year.
Information regarding the costs of the tests are included in the letter.
Counselors visited with juniors via Modern World History classes this week to introduce
them to Naviance. We will be meeting with juniors in IB history 1 and AP Modern World
History in May once testing has been completed.
We continue to meet with our seniors and are helping them with their post-graduation
plans. We are also talking with our seniors who have not fulfilled all of their graduation
requirements. It is important that our seniors do not wait to complete and submit their
Student Service Learning hours. Please remember, no student will graduate and walk
across the stage unless ALL of his or her graduation requirements are met.
The College and Career Center continues to have many scholarships available. Juniors
and seniors should be visiting the College and Career Center on a regular basis to hear
from college representatives and to learn about the many scholarships that are
available. Here are some wonderful programs available to our students through the
College and Career Center:

Community Yard Sale on April 25
Is spring here yet? After a chilly and snow-filled February and early March, I think we
are all looking forward to warmer weather. It’s also time to plan for the annual
Community Yard Sale. It will be held on Saturday, April 25 from 9am-1pm in the
parking lot of White Oak Middle School. This is a great opportunity to rid your home or
apartment of the clutter and to make a little money for yourself. Last year participants
sold everything from gently used clothing, to bicycles, books and even a canoe!
Proceeds from the sale help to offset the costs of The Blueprint, the school’s student
newspaper. To reserve your spot, complete the form at the end of this newsletter and
send it with your check to the address on the form.
Parents of seniors
Now is the time to reserve a copy of the yearbook for your child. The yearbook staff is
putting the final touches on a great book that will sell out again just like last year’s
yearbook. To place your order, go to www.jostensyearbooks.com.

Field Trip to Juniper Networks
Juniper Networks in Herndon, Virginia hosted a group of Springbrook students for a
Career Day. Greg Bensimon, a Juniper Consulting Engineer and Alumnus of
Springbrook High School, served as host for the day. One presentation covered “A Day
in the Life of an Engineer.” The students were given a tour of the lab where Juniper
tests its networking products before delivery to customers. Its marketing director
included some role playing of “an interview gone wrong” and our students identified all
of the “wrong” parts of the interview. Cameron Wilson of Code.org explained the
purpose of their organization and worked with our students on a collaborative coding
activity. All of the Juniper volunteer employees gave a brief description of their
individual roles at Juniper, followed by questions from the students. After a full day of
activities our students received box lunches and goodie bags to take with them. The
Juniper Career Day was an exciting and worthwhile activity for our students.

Field Trip to National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in Springfield, Virginia hosted
Springbrook students for a STEM Outreach Symposium. NGA delivers world-class
geospatial intelligence to professional analysts, warfighters and first responders. Dr.
Lenora P. Gant, Ph.D., the Senior Executive Academic Outreach and STEM
Coordinator, gave the welcome and introductions. Students saw a presentation by
Bluecube Aerospace explaining its small cube satellite which can capture and upload
images, temperature, humidity and position. Other research and development experts
explained their role at the NGA. We were then treated to a tour of parts of the facility,
including the director’s conference room. We saw the scale model created by the NGA
of the compound where Osama Bin Laden was located. It was used by the Navy Seals
in their preparations for their mission. The trip was very informative and our students
were impressed with the level of security at the facility.

Music Department / Music Boosters
Fantastic Music Program Trip to Memphis! Congratulations to our
Instrumental Musicians!
The music program students traveled to Memphis, Tennessee March 25-29 to
participate in a musical festival competition and go on fun and educational tours. There
were 68 students and 10 chaperones on the trip. The festival was sponsored by the
Performing Arts Consultants which hosted our student musicians’ performances at the
University of Memphis on Saturday morning, March 28. The adjudicators were Dr.
Albert Nguyen, Director of Bands at the University of Memphis, and Dr. John Chiego,
Orchestra Director at the University of Memphis. The Jazz Band and Symphonic Band
both received Superior Ratings from both judges. The String Orchestra received a
Superior rating from the first judge and an Excellent rating from the second judge. The
orchestra was just one point from earning a Superior rating from both judges. Mr.
Jones, Springbrook Musical Director beamed “what an amazing job from all of our
groups. I am extremely proud of them all.”
In addition to the adjudicated festival, they visited a number of museums and had lunch
at the Blues City Café located on Beale Street, the music center of the city. Their
museum visits included the National Civil Rights Museum, Gibson Guitar Museum,
Rock and Soul Museum, Sun Studios Museum, Stax Records Museum and of course
Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. According to many, this trip was one of the most
exciting and fun trips so far.
Both Mr. Jones and Scott Brock, Music Boosters President, emphasized that it could not
have happened without the support and assistance of the parents who volunteered their
time to chaperone as well as members from our school faculty and staff. However,
more support from more music parents is needed to continue these kinds of enriching
activities for our students. Just like with sports, the best way you can support your child
musician is to get involved. Mr. Jones concluded “I am looking forward to next year’s
trip to???????”
11
Here is a photo of Mr. Jones in the school office, looking very well just a few hours after
the 16 hour drive back to Springbrook, standing next to the trophies won in Memphis:
***For all those who were on the trip, please send some of your best or favorite
photos of the trip to [email protected] so that a collage of
the trip from multiple perspectives can be made for all to enjoy.
