ART, CONCENTRATION—ART TEACHER CERTIFICATION LICENSURE FOR GRADES K-12 ACADEMIC MAP:
DEGREE BS (120 CREDIT HOURS)
This degree map is a semester-by-semester course schedule for students majoring in Art with a concentration in Art
Teacher Certification Licensure for Grades K-12. The milestones listed to the right of each semester are designed to keep
a student on track to graduate in four years. The s chedule serves as a general guideline to help build a full schedule
each s e m e s t e r . Milestones are courses and special requirements necessary for timely progress to complete a major.
When one or more milestones are missed, students should consult with an academic advisor to determine if another degree
path would be more suitable.
Students who wish the Bachelor of Science Degree with licensure (teacher certification) to teach Art in grades K-12 must seek
formal admission to the program through the College of Education, during the sophomore year. They must have a 2.75
cumulative quality point average at time of application for admission and must pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or
the Computer-Based Academic Skills Assessments Test (CBT). Students who have previously earned a 21 on the ACT, 22 on the
Enhanced ACT or a combined 990 on the verbal and mathematics portions of the SAT are exempt from the PPST or the CBT. For
a full statement of admission and retention requirements see the Teacher Education Program under the College of Education
section. Students are required to student teach at both elementary and secondary schools to fulfill the certification
requirements. Satisfactory completion of the program results in licensure for teaching grades K-12 in Tennessee public schools.
The Tennessee Board of Regents Teacher Education Redesign Initiative, Ready2Teach, officially began in the fall semester of
2013. Ready2Teach requires residency in K-12 schools during the senior or final year (fall and spring) of undergraduate teacher
licensure programs. The residency year includes Residency I during the fall semester and Residency 2 during the spring
semester. Residency 1 will include methods courses and 90+ hours field study in K-12 schools. Residency 2 requires a full
semester (16 weeks) of student teaching. Residency 1 will only be offered in the fall while Residency 2 will only occur in the
spring. This initiative applies to all undergraduate teacher education candidates pursuing teacher licensure. Students are
required to seek advisement regarding their licensure programs as early as possible during their academic career at Tennessee
State University to ensure that all prerequisite courses and Praxis exams are complete in preparation for Residency.
Tennessee State University recognizes that students have diverse learning, life, and professional experiences. The University
provides opportunities for students to earn college credit toward the degree through a number of assessment options that
evaluate their learning experiences. These paths are grouped under the category “Prior Learning Assessment” (PLA). Various
means of earning PLA credit at TSU are the following: Advance Placement Program, American Council of Education (ACE)
Military Credit, American Council on Education (ACE) other Assessed Credit, College Level Exam Program (CLEP), DSST Credit by
Examination Program (includes DANTES Examination), Institutional Course Challenge Exams (Departmental Exams),
International Baccalaureate Credit, Other Military Service, Portfolio Assessment. To learn more about PLA contact your
academic advisor or the Office of Student Support Services for Adult and Distance Learners (615) 963-7001.
