Reading Journal FAQ

Reading Homework FAQ
1. What should we do with the books in the packet?
Students should read 15-20 minutes each night out loud to an adult, sibling,
or friend.
2. What if I can’t read with my child, can they read with someone else?
We would like them to read out loud every night to improve oral fluency. The
goal is for them to be reading on a nightly basis. They may read to a
babysitter, grandparents, or older sibling, as long as they can follow along.
3. When should the books and reading journal be returned to school?
The books and journal are due every Friday. Students will receive new books
the following Monday.
4. Why was my child only given 2 books?
This means that the books are longer, and could possible take more than 15
minutes to read, so it would need to be split into two nights.
5. What do we do with the reading journal?
An adult should write the date of that week, the titles of the books read
(this helps with duplication), and any comments or suggestions. Please see
the example.
6. Can we read books outside of the packet?
Yes! Please write those titles in the reading journal. This can also include
any additional books that you have read out loud to them.
7. What if we didn’t finish the books by Friday?
You may keep the books over the weekend if you need more time and return
on Monday. However, please be aware that I may not be able to send home
new books until Tuesday, due to time restraints in the classroom.
8. What if we would like to have the same book again?
Rereading is a wonderful skill that 2nd graders can utilize, especially if they
struggled with the first reading. Please make note of it in their reading
journals, and I will resend it home.
Thank you for spending this quality time reading with your child!
