What we are learning this week …
Student of the
Week:
Reading:
Math:
Readers are learning
about how to keep track of
their reading using logs. We
are learning a multitude of
strategies for solving tricky
words. We are discussing the
need to be flexible thinkers
who try several strategies. I
am continuing to meet individually with each reader and
assess current reading levels.
Many readers will bring home
longer and more challenging
books soon.
This week we will focus
on addition combinations
within 10 and 20. We will
also learn (and play games!)
about doubles and “near
doubles.” Students will investigate story problems,
being a detective who decides what change is happening (addition or subtraction) and how to set up
their equation. We will
share several different
problem solving strategies.

Writing:
S.S.:
Authors are continuing to work hard on their
personal narratives. We
will focus specifically this
week on: magnifying our
small moment with lots of
detail (using our senses),
developing the habit of
rereading (to check and
make sure our writing
makes sense and we’ve
used punctuation when
needed), and learning
about writer’s “intent.”
This week we will explore the last two regions
of our country, the West
and Midwest. Students will
be selecting a landform to
research. Students will use
both non-fiction texts and
laptops to research. There
are “kid-friendly” research
links on our class webpage.
Students will begin creating
presentations on iPads.

Ways you can help…

We are halfway through the 1st 9 weeks! Typically, your child will bring home a narrative format interim halfway through each 9 weeks. There will be no interim report
coming home this first 9 weeks because I am still assessing students and getting to
know them as learners.

Please make sure your child reads from his/her book folder each night for 30
minutes. Many students will be rereading shorter texts, thus building reading confidence.
There will be a “Student
of the Week” flier with
the schedule and
additional information in
your child’s Wednesday
Take Home folder.

Vocab Words:
