Dance Class Audition and Placement Information
Incoming 6th graders and 7th and 8th graders new to the school:
Incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders who are new to the school have the opportunity to
audition after the 6th grade orientation in August (August 27th from 1:00pm – 1:45pm).
The students do not need to bring anything prepared, they will learn a ballet technique
and modern dance phrase that day. It is important to wear clothes you can move in. Additionally, dance shoes
are not necessary. The students will be scored by each of the dance teachers. These scores will be compared to
the current students as a way of ensuring the most appropriate placement based on their overall performance.
If a student signs up for “Beginning Dance” or “Dance for Athletes” the audition is not required. Lastly,
students who do not audition in dance will have Beginning Dance as their introductory course.
Rising 7th and 8th graders who are currently students at Loiederman (6th and 7th graders):
All dance students participate in a placement audition at the beginning of quarter 3, which happens within the
students’ dance class. The students will learn and perform a ballet technique and modern dance phrase. The
scores are then compared and students are placed accordingly. Students who are absent on their placement
audition date will be placed into the same level and have the option of re-auditioning at the 6th grade
orientation audition in August.
Questions and Concerns about Placements
If any student has a question about their placement they can make an appointment to meet with the dance
teachers. During the meeting, the students will watch and review the video. The dance teachers will discuss
areas of improvement for next year.
Dance Company Audition Information
Dance Company is a select afterschool group that performs multiple times throughout the year at
assemblies, open houses, and concerts.
Clinics
Clinics will be held on Tuesday September 8th and Wednesday September 9th from 3:00pm – 4:15pm. The
audition dances will be taught these days. It is highly encouraged that students attend the dance clinics prior
to their audition. A ballet technique phrase and modern dance phrase are taught and these dances are also
posted on the dance class youtube page at “LMSDanceClass” for additional practice and learning purposes.
Auditions
We have two companies at Loiederman. The dance company auditions will occur on Thursday September 10th
from 3:00pm – 4:15pm. Students will perform the technique and modern dance in small groups. There is no
teaching that takes place on the audition date. The performances will be scored by the dance teachers.
Questions and Concerns
If a student has a question about his/her performance they can make an appointment with the dance teachers
to watch and review the video.

class at Loiederman: Exploring Dance (Beginning), Fundamentals of
Dance (Intermediate) or Dance as a Fine Art (Advanced)
