We’re on the Web!

Loiederman Lions have
been very busy creating,
performing, thinking, and
learning. This year has
been filled with many
opportunities to learn in
and through the arts.
Being a student at
Loiederman means
having multiple
opportunities to access
professional artists. In
September, orchestra
students traveled to the
Meyerhoff Symphony Hall
to experience a rehearsal
with our partners at the
Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra, conducted by
Maestro Marin Alsop.
Our musicians sat side by
side on stage with the
professional musicians
who play the same
instruments. As a followup, a BSO concert
master will visit the
orchestra at Loiederman
and serve as a guest
conductor for the
upcoming spring concert.

We hope you will join us
on May 8, 2013 for this
wonderful performance!
Speaking of wonderful
performances, please
check us out on the web
at loiedermanarts.org to
view our students and
teaching artists at work in
the classroom.
In this issue of The
SmART Choice, you will
see how the arts have
inspired students and
teachers at Loiederman
to embrace the many
benefits of learning
through arts. We are
especially grateful for our
partners at Strathmore
and Round House
Theatre. Thank you for
your continued
commitment and support
of Loiederman Middle
School for the Creative
and Performing Arts.
Meet Loiederman’s New Principal, Nicole Sosik
As I reflect on my first
year as principal of A.
Mario Loiederman Middle
School for the Creative
and Performing Arts, I
have a deeper
understanding and
appreciation for the arts
and their impact on
learning. At Loiederman,
the student experience is
quite unique in that the
creativity and exploration
of the middle school mind
is encouraged daily. Our
students enhance their
skills of collaboration and
confidence as they
explore the many art
forms offered. These
skills and character traits
transfer across all
academics and become
lifelong learning
opportunities. I am proud
to be part of a staff that
is lucky to provide such
an artful influence in the
lives of our students.

Music Notes
Loiederman’s generous
partner, Strathmore, has
provided multiple
opportunities for students
to get up close and
personal with the arts. In
January, progressive hiphop artist and beat-boxer
extraordinaire Christylez
Bacon, performed a
concert for sixth graders,
a Loiederman tradition.
Christylez’ blend of hiphop and storytelling has
inspired many Loiederman
students to explore their
Winter Instrumental Music Concert,
2012
musical talents.
Strathmore Artists in
Residence shared their
talents and experiences
with Loiederman students
throughout the month of
March. Drummer Isabelle
De Leon led a percussion
workshop, electric cellist
Wytold jammed with the
orchestra and jazz singer
Integriti worked with our
concert choir.
The Loiederman Chamber
Choir, under the direction
of Mr. Chris Guerra, had
the opportunity to create
an original piece with
international composer
Jim Papoulis. In October,
Papoulis conducted a
workshop at Loiederman
where students helped
compose the text and
score of the special song.
On June 10, 2013, more
than 200 student
performers, including our
Chamber Choir, will host a
concert at Strathmore
featuring Papoulis’ music.
Be sure to visit us for a
spring music concert!
Dance Fever
Loiederman dance classes
provide students instruction
in various forms such as
ballet, tap, jazz, modern
and hip-hop. Advanced
dance students are gearing
up for a visit from
CityDance who will be in
dance classes for a
choreography workshop in
May.
Winter Dance Concert, 2012
Students and teachers are
hard at work preparing for
the upcoming spring
concert. Come check us
out on April 24 and 25!
Winter Dance Concert, 2012
So Much Drama
Loiederman theatre
students experience
diverse exposure to the
dramatic arts. This year’s
fall production, What I
Really Feel, was a
collection of monologues
written and performed by
Loiederman students.
Fall Production,
What I Really Feel
Students wowed
audiences with dramatic
and comedic monologues
that shed light on the
middle school experience
from a student’s
perspective.
All theatre classes were
visited by our partners at
Round House Theatre in
February and March for a
two-day acting and
improvisation residency.
Loiederman’s spring
production will be Little
Shop of Horrors under the
direction of Constance Y.
Lee. You will not want to
miss this spectacular
performance May 16, 17 &
18!

Loiederman Students Shine
Many students share their

youngest winner of the Best
Actress Award from Olney

Eighth grader JoHannah Yankey
is a member of the Washington
Performing Arts Society &

of performing for President
Barack Obama during the
presidential inauguration.
Congratulations to Ryan
Vyskocil who will perform in
