Gaithersburg Middle School Summer Reading 2015 Reading is a life-long skill that a person not only needs to succeed as a student and a worker, but it is also an essential skill in civic and personal activities. Perhaps even more importantly, reading opens the world to a person through various forms of literature. By reading, students have the opportunity to learn about people, times, regions, and ideas that may enhance their knowledge and development. Reading can also bring a lifetime of pleasure and mental acuity. Research strongly suggests that reading, like most skills, improves with practice and strengthens skills. It also shows that if students do not continue to read over the summer then they will lose reading gains they made during the previous school year. Therefore, consistent with our commitment to prepare all students for success, we continue in MCPS to encourage all students to read during the summer. Students are required to read one book (fiction or non-fiction) and must complete one graphic organizer. Students will submit the completed graphic organizer to their English/ESOL teacher during the first week of school. This assignment is mandatory! th 6 Grade Summer Reading Suggestions 39 Clues Series by Rick Riordan Percy Jackson and the Olympian Series and Heroes of Olympus Series by Rick Riordan Kane Chronicles Series by Rick Riordan Scat and Chomp by Carl Hiaasen th th 7 Grade Summer Reading Suggestions Wonder by R.J.
