W e l c o m e P a r e n t s! Northwood You are important to Northwood High School. Your presence and involvement in your student’s development and education are critical factors to high school success and student achievement. When parents are actively engaged in their student's education, students benefit with: PARENT ENGAGEMENT = STUDENT SUCCESS Although parent involvement and parent engagement are sometimes used synonymously, there are some important differences—parents can be involved in their student’s education without being actively engaged. Being involved means that you are there, which in itself is important to a student’s development and overall academic success. 10 Ways to Be Engaged in Your Student’s Learning and Support Northwood High School: 1. Subscribe to Northwood’s PTSA Listserv by visiting the Northwood High School website and clicking the PTSA Link to subscribe, stay connected and informed. 2. Join the PTSA and support the students, faculty, staff, and school. Membership is just $15. 3. Attend Back-to-School Night, Thursday, September 27 where you will have an opportunity to meet your child’s teachers 4. Attend the monthly PTSA Informational Meetings on the 3rd Tuesday in the Media Center. 5. Attend PTSA Events throughout the year. 6. Show an interest in your student's education; ask your student each day to tell you something he or she learned. 7. Set high expectations for achievement; strive for excellence - not perfection; discuss assignments, projects and due dates. 8. Let your student know you believe in his or her ability to succeed in school; remember to praise effort as well as results. 9. Reinforce good study and sleep habits; establish a daily routine and a quiet place at home where your student can study with minimal distractions; encourage organizational skills for homework. 10. Volunteer and participate in school events and parent programs to show your student that you care and are committed to his or her learning and high school success. Being engaged means that you are aware of what is going on and are a fundamental part of the process, which is crucial to a student’s development and academic success.
