Spring, 2013 Northwood PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE PARENT ENGAGEMENT = STUDENT SUCCESS Although parent involvement and parent engagement are sometimes used synonymously there are some important differences--parents can be involved in their student’s education without being actively engaged. Being involved means that you are there, which in itself is important to a student’s development and overall academic success. Being engaged means that you are aware of what is going on and are a fundamental part of the process, which is crucial to a student’s development and academic success. To Volunteer contact: [email protected]. Northwood PTSA wants parents/guardians and other key stakeholders to be actively engaged in their student’s education both at home and at school. Northwood PTSA Officers: Yolanda Mazyck, President st Brad Sperber, 1 Vice President nd Elizabeth Dunn, 2 Vice President Susan Luck, Secretary Jim Burke, Treasurer Northwood re-opened its doors in 2004. Eight years later we are on the verge of graduating our ninth class of seniors. As with previous classes, the Class of 2013 will have representation in all roads traveled by high school graduates – postsecondary study, trades, workforce and some will choose to take a year off. Whatever their decision, we thank Northwood staff and administration for their contribution to the process. They continue to work towards their mission to ensure that ALL students have the opportunity to succeed in a rigorous curriculum, including the completion of a learning experience in a college-level environment. I put emphasis on working towards, because there is still an education debt that prevents ALL students from succeeding in a rigorous curriculum. Dr. Starr and the MCPS Office of the Chief Engagement and Partnership sponsored a Community Dialogue on Academic Achievement – the African American Student on March 2, 2013. It was enlightening, and it certainly confirmed Dr. Starr’s commitment to ensuring the achievement of ALL students. I was also pleased to learn that Montgomery County Council of PTSAs are also joining the conversation and have re-committed their partnership with the NAACP Parent Council to develop programs in local PTSAs to support Dr. Starr’s initiative. Northwood has already developed an African American Parent and Student Initiative as a start to address the achievement disparities, which ultimately benefit the entire student body by developing more rigorous course offerings. When students are better prepared to succeed in rigorous curriculum, then Northwood can offer more advanced curriculum opportunities for ALL students. I truly believe this initiative is a win-win for ALL Northwood students. For more information about Northwood’s African-American Parent and Student Initiative, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or Lory Green, Northwood Cluster Coordinator at [email protected]. Personalized, engraved bricks surround the Northwood HS seal in a professionally installed centerpiece. Installation of new engraved bricks will be done twice per year, with the next installation scheduled for early May. Look for complete order information on the NHS website coming in March and add your family name, your student’s name or a short message to a 4x8 or 8x8 brick. A variety of icons are also available to highlight a particular interest. All proceeds above and beyond the cost of the brick and the installation will be used by the Northwood HS PTSA to support the Northwood HS community. Northwood Parent, Teacher, Student Association WE ARE NORTHWOOD! NORTHWOOD ATHLETIC BOOSTERS The NHS Athletic Boosters seeks leadership and new members. You don't have to have an NHS athlete in the family, just enthusiasm for the positive influence which sports exert in many teenaged lives; appreciation of the hours of hard work put in by both student athletes and their dedicated coaches; or a love of sports that makes you want to support the many NHS teams. Boosters are integral to NHS sports, and we need more families to be integral to Boosters! We have roles at all skill levels whether it is driving a truck for the mulch sale; writing a sports report; or handing a bottle of gatorade over the concession stand counter. If you want more information, call Elizabeth Dunn at 301587-1670, or come to a Boosters meeting in the NHS Media Center at 7PM on Wednesday, April 10 or May 8. Please spread the word to any families of incoming freshman that our meetings are open to all, and we would love to tell them about the experience of supporting athletes at the high school level. Please mark down these other important dates: April 6: delivery day 8AM-6PM, for Athletic Boosters mulch sales (we need volunteers for any amount of hours!) May 7: spring sports awards at 2:30, Minds in Motion and Scholar Athletes honored May 20: Senior Sports Banquet, 6:30-9:30PM, Knights of Columbus, Fr Rosensteel Council #2169, Silver Spring NHS recognizes and bids farewell to our graduating athletes NHS ATHLETICS BOOSTERS: GO GLADIATORS! AFTER PROM FUNDRAISERS The After Prom is the event which immediately follows the May 18th NHS Prom, taking place between midnight and five am, keeping our students entertained in a safe environment. It is open to all Juniors and Seniors. The plan this school year is to have After Prom at Dave and Busters in Bethesda. Students will be encouraged to take the provided bus transportation to After Prom. Thank you to everyone who participated in the PTSA Fundraisers this Winter. The Winter Cocktail Party turned out to be a terrific time, where NHS parents came together to raise funds for the After Prom and, in the process, build a stronger school community! As this is being written, the Silent Auction and Mixed Bag Designs Sale are coming to a close. The PTSA appreciates all of the item donations for the Auction and the purchasing power that has supported it. Preliminary results indicate that more than $4500 was raised. The Mixed Bag Designs Sale seems to be a quite profitable fundraiser. The NHS SGA members have been "key" players in marketing the products and deserve a huge thanks! We want to also thank those families that have made financial donations to the PTSA After Prom fundraising. If you feel so inclined, please continue to support your student's PTSA and send your financial donation to the school address marked: PTSA. Donations go toward After Prom, Student Scholarships, teacher appreciation, 2013 Graduation and a number of other projects. $25 gift certificates were awarded in a random drawing to auction bidders. One of the winners was English teacher Mr. Daryl Alston. He wrote this kind thank you letter to Jim Burke, our indefatigable treasurer: Jim, I know it was a random drawing, but thank you and the PTSA so much for the gift certificate. Today just happens to be my birthday and I also just happen to love Amazon – so while you may think the gift was small, I thought it was awesome! Thanks again, Daryl PRINCIPAL SELECTION PROCESS Candidates will be interviewed on March 21.
