What's YOUR grade as a Northwood parent?
The school year is passing fast, and it is time for a
quick check.

Can you name three Northwood events coming up?
Have you attended a Northwood game, presentation, or performance in the last two months?
If your student struggles, do you know about Northwood’s tutoring resources?
If your student excels, are you learning about Advanced Placement courses?
If your student is home alone, do you know what activities Northwood offers?
Do you know your student’s favorite adult at Northwood – teacher, coach, advisor?
And if you have been staying connected to Northwood, and encouraging your student to
connect at Northwood, are you also providing support to Northwood?
Having strong academic programs and fun and safe student activities at Northwood requires an
involved parent community. PTSA membership is a great first step to staying connected, and a
PTSA office guarantees a ringside seat to the Northwood action. This newsletter lays out how you
can assist with the Online Auction, AfterProm, Scholarships, Elections, the Graduation Bus, and
the Staff Appreciation lunch. Consider taking a leadership role: model involvement for your student
by showing active support of their school. Set your sights on a parenting grade of A – sign up to
help!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Greetings Gladiator Families,
Second semester is well underway! As I visit classrooms, it is clear that our newest Gladiators have adjusted to
high school and, along with the upperclassmen, are engaged in rich student-to-student discourse that demonstrates
the critical thinking required for college and career readiness.
If you follow me on Twitter (and you should), you may recall a recent Twitter quote: “It’s always a good idea to
speak up for your school because I can promise you someone is speaking against it.” As your proud principal, there
is nothing I enjoy more than sharing the great news about Northwood. For those with less practice or opportunity,
I’ve listed a few facts to trade in the grocery line or over the virtual backyard fence.

Northwood boasts the largest dance program in the county. Our Feb. 20 1 Annual MCPS Dance
Showcase highlighted the exceptional talent and leadership at our school. The accolades from Board
Members, colleagues and community keep pouring in. Kudos to the Academy for their outstanding efforts!
The MC2 program, which allows select students to graduate high school with both a diploma and an
associate’s degree in biochemistry, has been expanded to offer a General Studies Pathway. Northwood
and Northwest high schools are the only two MCPS high schools where students have this opportunity!
We have one of the most acclaimed internship programs in the county, with students landing internships at
prestigious locations such as NIH. Most recently, Rhasaan Bovell, an MCCPTA intern, traveled with MCPS
representatives to testify before state lawmakers about the need to support school construction.
Our forward-thinking focus on Student Discourse and openness to MCPS visitors on Discourse Day has
been dubbed a “model” that other schools are seeking to emulate.
Social studies students are incorporating Google Chrome Book technology into the classroom. Students
are able to use a variety of Google apps to help with their learning experience and become more proficient
with technology.
Northwood leads the county in reducing suspensions and focusing on equity as it relates to the so-called
School-to-Prison Pipeline. This effort is not the result of simply ignoring behaviors that previously resulted
in suspension. Due to our focus on building community by demonstrating the value in ALL students, the
behaviors that would have led to suspension are down as well! Fewer disruptions mean more time for
learning.
While our overall ineligibility rate is higher than we would like, when you disaggregate it by subgroup, we
are among county leaders with achievement among African American students and ESOL students.
Already, students in the ACES program have earned $1.2 million in academic scholarships!
More and more students are choosing Northwood first and for good reason! We are leaders in the county in
ensuring that students of diverse backgrounds excel both academically and socially.
Our Wellness Center offers a unique partnership that provides Northwood families with wrap-around
services to ensure that the needs of the whole family are met.
…And as our Gallup Data so clearly demonstrates, Northwood has one of the most nurturing and
responsive staffs in MCPS. The good news is spreading! On the air of a recent webinar I was conducting,
one Northern Virginia educator asked for a job on the spot!
Northwood students have embraced “growth mindset” thinking, demonstrating our belief that lifelong learners take
risks, expand thinking and deepen their challenge. This quarter we recognized 474 Honor Roll students; 56 with
straight As! The names of these students are on posters around the school. We also celebrated 100 students who
have shown significant academic improvement. All of these scholars were invited to an ice cream social this month.
Gladiators aren’t just great scholars, they are also great artists, advocates, orators and more! In the news: four
Northwood art students were chosen to take part in the prestigious Johns Hopkins Art Show and Dahlia Ehrenberg
won first prize in the photography category. Our Minority Scholars Program has grown from five to fifty in a single
year under the leadership of junior Laila-Rose Galvin. Northwood’s Forensics team goes into next week’s county
awards night with three semifinalists – Leslie Reiffen, Danielle Burman and Mariana Taitano. More than 100
students showed up to a lunch meeting about internships linking classwork with real-world careers. Outstanding!
Poll after poll indicates that students are more engaged than ever before. Northwood students show gains in all
three areas measured by MCPS: hope, engagement and well-being. I am grateful to our outstanding staff for
providing such a nurturing environment for our students.
I'd like to thank all students who participated in the Ask the Principal Town Hall Feb. 25. Insightful questions related
to the new bell schedule, the achievement gap and school spirit caught the attention of all present. In fact, it was
because of a student suggestion that we will try a dry run of our new bell schedule before the end of the year. The
2
latest information about our new bell schedule is now on the Northwood website as well as footage from the Ask
the Principal session. Undoubtedly, there are countless other personal success stories. Please encourage your
child to share this information with me.
Parents, this is a busy time of year for students. Many exciting activities compete with academics. Please join me in
encouraging all students to enjoy this unique time while continuing to do their best. As a reminder, National Honor
Society and AVID tutors are available to help with any subject. Students can ride the activity bus home. Additional
student supports include the ESOL homework club and Writing Center. Also remember that all teachers have office
hours and are available to work with students at lunch and after school.
Academy News
In academy news, all academies have begun working with selected seniors on Capstone Projects.
The Politics Advocacy and Law Academy students testified at the Board of Education’s Capital Improvement
Plan meeting advocating for improvements to the school. Three students competed at the Maryland State Moot
Court competition in Baltimore. The Mock Trial team defeated Seneca Valley and Walter Johnson in a case similar
to the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, Missouri. Students took advantage of opportunities to attend meetings with
Court of Special Appeals Judge Douglas Nazarian and Supreme Court Justices Scalia and Ginsburg. The State
Attorney’s office and members of the Montgomery County Bar Association worked with the students to educate
them on cyber-bullying laws and cyber-responsibilities. The students will be competing against Blair and Paint
Branch to create a new and more effective cyber-bullying law. We will travel to Annapolis to meet Justice Barbera
and listen to oral arguments in the State Court of Appeals.
When the weather is warmer, the Montgomery County Police Explorers will visit for an interactive educational
activity and Sean Fey, the head of the Criminal Justice Department at Montgomery College will speak with students
about the program at MC and the articulation agreements in Criminal Justice with other Maryland Colleges.
Environmental Science students are working on two big projects. One is applying to be recertified as a Maryland
Green School. This involves a number of small projects around the school. The other one is working in partnership
with Ms. Reff-Presco in building a habitat sculpture garden in our courtyard.
Technology and Engineering students will now have access to a second computer programming course featuring
Code.org programs. This computer science program develops students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills,
by showing them how to create, not simply use, new technologies. This fundamental knowledge is needed to
prepare students for the 21st century, regardless of their ultimate field of study or occupation. Engineering students
are making various projects such as a roller coaster robotics vehicle using the Robolab program, bridges using the
Cortex program, and elevators using the Vex program. These projects are high-tech and use a variety of computer
programming languages.
The Academy of Musical Theater and Dance (AMTAD) faculty and students have been busy preparing for
multiple performances opening in the Spring. The play "Blood Wedding" runs March 20, 21 and 22 and features
acting in both Spanish and English. Billboard Magic "One Hit Wonders" runs April 23, 24, and 25 at 7 pm with a free
community dress rehearsal performance on April 22 at 6:30 pm for elementary and middle school students. The
show involves more than 100 student dancers, singers, musicians and stage technicians. Over 20 AMTAD senior
students are participating in Capstone projects to be presented at the end of May. These seniors and other AMTAD
students will be recognized for their accomplishments at the AMTAD Academy Awards Night on May 28. Finally,
Northwood was proud to host the 1st Annual MCPS Dance Showcase on February 20. Dancers from eight middle
and high schools took master classes during the day and performed in a showcase for the community that evening.
It was an honor to help bring dance to the forefront of Arts in the county.
The Humanities Academy students enjoyed trips to the Newseum and the JEA/NSPA convention in Washington,
DC. A 2nd edition of the literary magazine, Pen and Shield, is currently in production. Seniors have also partnered
with mentors and are working on numerous capstone projects related to video production, publishing, health,
communication and art. Project presentations have been scheduled for May 8, 2015.
The Visual Arts Pathway within the Humanities Academy has developed a comprehensive plan to assist students
in developing successful Capstone Projects to present to the school community in May 2015. Students are working
to create capstone projects using experiences from internships, grant projects, and independent research in
photography, studio art, and sculpture. Many of our students are working very hard on our Wildlife Habitat and
Sculpture grant project that will be completely installed by June 2015. Additionally we have students that have
participated in professional art shows (i.e., John Hopkins Art Show and the Vans shoe competition). We look
forward to continuing to develop ourselves as artists and entrepreneurs.
The Montgomery Middle College at Northwood (MC)2@N is expanding to include a General Studies pathway in
addition to the current biochemistry student plan. Students who take part in this rigorous course of study will
graduate with both a high school diploma and associate’s degree. Students participate in rich internships, take part
3
in college courses while still in high school and distinguish themselves as exceptional scholars who are college and
career ready. Additionally, students reduce their college tuition bill substantially since many of their courses can be
applied to a bachelor’s degree. Northwood is the only MCPS high school to offer this opportunity to students.
Important Dates for Juniors
th
All 11 grade students who wish to apply to a 4-year university should test this spring. Students should prepare
extensively before taking college admission tests. If you are not enrolled in College Test Prep at Northwood, see
your counselor if you would like information about area prep courses. If you need information about the college
application process, join us for the PTSA meeting on April 21. We will discuss the college admission timeline from
now until acceptance letters next year!
If you are eligible for a fee waiver, please see Mrs. Levine or Mrs. Wolfson.
