PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Welcome to a new
Northwood families.
Dear Gladiator Families,
school
year
My name is Danielle Gillon and I’m your current PTSA
president.
I would first like to say congratulations to the class of
2016. We made it! Your Northwood High School
family is very proud of you.
In addition, we are happy to have the class of 2019
join our family this year and I ask the parents of this
class to get plugged in and involved in our
community.
One of the easiest ways to get plugged in is to join
the PTSA and volunteer your talents. Parents can also
join the booster clubs. We have the Sports Boosters
club; Ta-Da, which promotes and supports the
theatre and dance programs and performances; and
the Music Boosters who do the same for the music
department. If you have a student who plays sports,
is in theatre and/or dance, or takes music classes,
please think about joining and supporting our
talented students.
We have several events going on during the school
year that will require parent volunteers. If you are
interested in volunteering but not quite sure what to
sign up for, please contact me and I will get you
connected.
The PTSA has two seats that need to be filled for this
school year. Our MCCPTA Delegate seat is
available, which entails attending the monthly council
meeting, voting on behalf of NHS PTSA, and
addressing any issues with the council on NHS PTSA’s
behalf. The second position is the Coordinator for
Scholarships. Every year, the PTSA presents
deserving students with scholarships for college. As
the coordinator, you would hand out and collect the
scholarship applications and devise a committee to
interview and select candidates. If anyone is
interested in these positions please contact me.
It is hard to believe that it has only been a few short
weeks since we welcomed more than 1,600 students
to the 2015-2016 school year at Northwood High
School! Staff and students have settled into daily
teaching and learning routines and the air crackles
with energy as students engage in activities that build
skills for college and beyond!
At Northwood, we believe that a quality education is
the fundamental right of every child. We are
committed to our core values of Respect and
Responsibility and to celebrating Persistence,
Tenacity and Collaboration. As I visit classrooms, I
am excited to see students collaboratively working to
solve problems; persistently setting and meeting
goals; and tenaciously adjusting, enhancing and
learning from challenges. Looking for a good parent

During the first few weeks of school, we have hosted
several community events at Northwood. In late
August, many families joined our leadership team at
the Warwick residence to learn about our programs
and to take part in exciting back-to-school giveaways.
Students new to Advanced Placement courses took
part in our summer AP Prep Camp, which was featured
in the Washington Post. Our Literary Magazine was
recognized for outstanding writing. Additionally, we
have had record parent participation in our grade 9
orientation, back-to-school night, September PTSA
meeting and the many, many sporting events and
contests involving our students. Please see the table
below for important upcoming dates.
If you are plan to volunteer this school year this
information is for you. MCPS tracks the volunteer
hours of all parents in the school system. There is a
Participation in afterschool activities is an important
part of ensuring a successful high school experience.
Please encourage your child to participate in an after
school activity. Many clubs still have spaces available.
This year FREE snacks and bottled water will be
available to all students who participate in an
afterschool activity. The activity buses are available on
Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Please visit our

black binder in the front office labeled Parent
Volunteer Log. When signing in at the front office,
please ask for this log book. The log book is set up
alphabetically by last name. Each and every time you
volunteer at the school or work on a project at home,
please remember to log your hours. We have a lot of
talented parents in this community and would like for
these individuals to be recognized for all that they
do.

Once again welcome to the 2015-2016 school year.
Let’s all work together to make this a great year for
our students.

In addition, school staff, identified as OSET (Onsite
School Emergency Team), have been trained on
safety procedure in case on an emergency. If you
have any suggestions to improve school safety,

website, or consult a copy of the NHS Clubs
Brochure, to learn more.
A reminder to parents who drive their children
to school: please obey the speed limit, avoid
disembarking your child outside of designated dropoff points, and refrain from stopping in the middle of
University Blvd. Our School Resource Officer will
randomly patrol the school parking lot and fine any
vehicle driving unsafely on school property.
All students should receive an interim report soon.
Interim reports will be completed Oct. 2 and mailed
home from the central office. Interim reports will also
be available on Edline for students whose parents
have active Edline accounts. If you have any
questions about your child’s grade, please contact
the teacher, school counselor, or grade-level
administrator. It is important to understand that
there is time for students to improve their grades
before the end of the first marking period on Oct. 30.
Please ask your child about the Gladiator Lunch
Sessions offered by ALL NHS departments on
Wednesdays and Thursdays of each week. On these
days lunch is 55 minutes: 30 minutes for students to
enjoy lunch and friends and 25 minutes for students
to get extra help or make up missed assignments.
I am actively seeking feedback about our school
and academic opportunities to inspire and motivate
our students. I will communicate information about
school events via the school website, Sunday Calls,
PTSA meetings and Twitter @Northwoodprin. Please
feel free to contact the school with kudos,
suggestions, questions and concerns.
Thank you for helping to make Northwood an
inviting, enriching and supportive place for our
students.
Go Gladiators!
