January 15, 2013 Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the Northwood HS (NHS) PTSA Meeting
January 15, 2013
A Presentation on the NHS Course Registration process was held in place of the January 2013 PTSA Meeting.
The Presentation was held in the NHS Auditorium and presented by Resource Counselor Ms. Diana Blitz. The
meeting began at 7:00pm.
Opening
Ms. Mazyck opened the meeting with an expression of gratitude and good wishes to Principal Dr. Henry
Johnson, who had recently resigned as principal of Northwood to accept an appointment as the Assistant
State Superintendent of Curriculum and Assessment for the Maryland Department of Education. Dr. Johnson
has served as principal since the schools reopening in 2004 and worked tirelessly to serve the school and our
students.
Ms. Mazyck encouraged all present to join the PTSA if they were not yet a member and to consider volunteer
opportunities with the PTSA.
Ms. Mazyck introduced Ms. Bronda Mills, Community Superintendent for Blair, Einstein, Northwood, and
Kennedy Clusters and Dr. Sito Narcisse, Performance Director. Ms. Mills thanked Dr. Johnson for his years of
service and leadership at Northwood. Ms. Mills provided assurance for a smooth transition during the
process of identifying a new principal. In the coming months input will be solicited from teachers, parents
and students to help select the new principal. Additional information on the principal selection will be
provided in the coming months. The recent focus had been on identifying an interim principal. Ms. Mills
introduced Mr. Mark Kelch, who will be the interim “acting” principal for the remainder of the school year.
Mr. Kelch is a former principal at Richard Montgomery HS and Sligo MS, and other positions within MCPS. Mr.
Kelch provided some additional background and stated he is not a change agent but wants to ensure the
school continues to run smoothly. His focus the first couple of weeks will be on a)learning the school,
teachers and students, b)following the NHS calendar (he pointed out that so many things on running a school
efficiently come down to following the calendar—testing, sports, performances, graduation events, etc.), c)
focus on seniors to ensure graduation requirements are complete.
Presentation
Ms. Diana Blitz, NHS Resource Counselor, gave a presentation on Course selection for the 2013-2014 school
year. All students will meet with their counselors during their English classes this week and next to finalize
their course selection. The course selection form must be signed by a parent.
