Minutes of the Northwood HS (NHS) PTSA Meeting
I. Date: September 17, 2013
II. Opening: Meeting called to order at 7:30pm by PTSA President Liz Dunn with approximately 60 parents,
teachers and students in attendance.
III. Secretary’s Report: PTSA Secretary Susan Luck reviewed the Agenda, including the explanation that the
PTSA is beginning the practice of using the Promethean board in lieu of paper handouts for the Agenda and
review of previous months Minutes. The previous PTSA Meeting Minutes (May 21, 2013) were reviewed.
Motion made to approve the Minutes; 5/21/13 Minutes approved.
IV. Student Interview: PTSA VP Danielle Gillion conducted an interview with senior Charles Hennessey.
Charles is the quarterback of NHS varsity football team. His long-term goals are to get a college degree in
either Engineering or Sports Management and to give back to the community. If possible he would love to
play football in college.
V. Principal’s Report: Ms. Charley-Green discussed the following areas:
a. Back to School Night (BTSN). Great turnout of parents; prior to start of BTSN there was Edline
training, meeting for senior parents on college application process, showcase of NHS programs in hallways,
feedback from parents is that they need more time in between periods to get to the next classroom.
b. Friday, 9/27/13 is an early release day with a mock SAT scheduled
c. Homecoming/Spirit Week is Sept 30 – Oct 4, with Homecoming Dance on Oct 5. Parents may come
to see the Hall Decorations on Friday, Oct 4 from 8am-9am.
d. PSAT on Oct 16 for 10th graders by Revolution Prep. Teachers will wear college alma mater tshirts.
e. Questions & Answers
1. How did teachers like BTSN? Ms. Charley-Green said teachers were encouraged by the
number of families present, liked being able to provide personal background, and liked having BTSN begin in
auditorium.
2. In past years there was a 2nd semester BTSN, could that be brought back? Ms. CharleyGreen said that because teachers are not contractually bound to attend a 2nd BTSN not every teacher would be
able to participate and suggested to combine this with other meetings/opportunities where parents and
teachers can come together. There was a suggestion for a January “Parent Visit” day. Ms. Charley-Green
reminded that parents are welcome to visit a classroom at any time.
VI. President’s Report: Liz Dunn introduced the following NHS staff who were present to provide parents
with an opportunity to meet with them during a 15-minute Breakout session. Teachers/staff present for the
breakout session included:

VII. Vice President’s Report/Presentation:
1st VP Brad Sperber distributed a survey to gauge parent interest for topics for upcoming PTSA
meetings. Copy of Survey attached to Minutes.
2nd VP Danielle Gillion’s current focus is Homecoming Dance and help is needed selling tickets,
getting donations of water & snacks, and finding chaperones.
VIII. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Cathy Shresta distributed copies of the 2013-2014 budget for review
and approval. Motion made to approve the Budget; 2013-2014 Budget approved. It was noted that an audit
of the budget was required and volunteers were solicited.
IX. Committee and Communications Reports: Membership chair Sue Lubeck provided information on
joining the PTSA. Sue also reported that parents should join the listserv and noted that the PTSA now has a
Facebook page and encouraged parents to “like” it.
X. Adjournment: Meeting ended at 9:02pm.
