Strength/Weakness/Opportunity Threat

Wheaton Audit 2014
Environmental S.W.O.T. Analysis
A SWOT analysis is when a team looks for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Note: a threat is not as
serious as a weakness but it is something that could become a weakness. Segment number locations are shown on
the map below.
SEGMENT 36:
STRENGTH
This picture was taken
along Georgia Avenue.
It is a strength because
it is a vegetative buffer.
Sidewalk buffers help
to protect people from
traffic. The plants in
the buffer help to
absorb rain water and
help to keep the air
clean. It also makes
the area more visually
attractive
SEGMENT 21:
THREAT
SEGMENT 35: WEAKNESS
SEGMENT 33:
OPPORTUNITY
This is a picture of an uneven
covered manhole in the middle of the
street. It has a lot of cracks around it.
This is a weakness because it could
blow someone’s tire out or it can
cause an accident.
This picture shows the
edge of a parking lot along
University Blvd. It is an
opportunity because the
raised portion on the edge
of the lot could be removed and a parking lot
filter strip can be installed.
Parking lot filter strips are
vegetated areas in parking
lots that catch runoff and
the pollutants associated
with it. It would help keep
local streams clean.
This picture was taken on Kensington Blvd. This is a threat because over time
the cracks in the pavement and sidewalk could get worse and become
dangerous to pedestrians and drivers alike. Many of the threats we found in
our SWOT analysis were related to pavement issues.
