memo DATE: February 3, 2016 TO: WIC Coordinators & CPAs FROM: Rick Chiat, Food Delivery Unit SUBJECT: Formula Shopping Guide Insert Updated & Now Available As we previously indicated in the December 2, 2015 Wednesday Update, Abbott Nutrition has updated the labels on its Similac contract formulas. The label updates have begun to appear on store shelves and include all forms of the following WIC formulas: Similac Advance, Similac Sensitive, Similac Total Comfort, and Similac for Spit-Up. These label updates did not result in any changes in the size or formulation of the products, the reconstituted ounces or the UPC codes. As a result of these label changes, we have updated the WIC Formula Insert to Shopping Guide (see attachment) and you can now order the revised Insert on the WIC Materials Order Form. When you provide the WIC Formula Insert to Shopping Guide to a WIC participant this is a good time to educate the family on some of the following tips to help assure a more successful shopping experience: • • • • They must only purchase the specific size, type and brand of formula listed on the voucher and no substitutions are allowed. o Sharing this information is particularly important if the client is getting a less common formula type (such as concentrate or RTF). Also, we’ve found a few cases where clients have confused Alimentum with Total Comfort, because the labels have similar colors. If there is ever a need to change a formula, they should contact your agency for assistance. If a store does not have the formula they need, they can check availability at a different store, go back to the store at another time or purchase a lesser quantity (with the understanding that they would NOT be able to obtain the additional containers). They should let you know if they experience availability issues at the stores. If you should have any questions regarding the Similac formula label update, please contact me at [email protected]
