e-Trauma Update
March 2015
Commissioner Appoints Seven STAC Members
In January, MDH Commissioner Dr. Edward Ehlinger re-appointed six State Trauma Advisory
Council (STAC) members. Dr. Peter Cole, Mr. Dan DeSmet, Dr. Ron Furnival, Dr. John Hick,
Ms. Carol Immermann and Dr. Mark Paulson were all re-appointed to a four-year term.
Commissioner Ehlinger also appointed Dr. Steven Lockman as the new Rehabilitation Specialist.
Dr. Lockman is a physical medicine and rehabilitation practitioner of 17 years. He is currently a
staff physician at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Welcome, Dr. Lockman!
Trauma System Data Work Plan
At its March meeting, the STAC reviewed the proposed data work plan developed by the
STAC’s Data Work Group. The work plan establishes priorities, tasks and timelines for several
trauma data goals that have yet to be attained. The council will consider adopting the work plan
at its June meeting. Submit questions, comments or concerns to the trauma system coordinator:
Chris Ballard or 651-201-3841.
TPM 101 and MNTrauma 101 Classes Scheduled
Trauma Program Manager 101 is a one-day class designed for trauma program managers who
are new to their role or would like a refresher. The class will cover the duties and responsibilities
of the trauma program manager and performance improvement processes and techniques.
MNTrauma 101 will address trauma registry case inclusion criteria, data definitions, helpful
shortcuts, customization and managing registry users. But the lion’s share of the class will be
dedicated to tailoring and building reports that best serve attendees and their trauma programs.
Both classes will be held in Bemidji on April 9 and 10, 2015, respectively. The classes are free.
Contact your regional trauma advisory committee to find out if travel cost reimbursement is
available. Register for either or both classes.
ICD-10 Trauma Registry Inclusion Criteria Proposed
The trauma registry inclusion criteria describe the major trauma cases that qualify for entry into
the registry using ICD-9 diagnosis and cause codes. With the looming adoption of ICD-10 by the
health care industry, there is a need to translate the current ICD-9 inclusion criteria to ICD-10. At
its March meeting, the STAC reviewed the proposed ICD-9 to ICD-10 translation and will
consider adopting it at the June meeting. The proposed ICD-10 inclusion criteria are meant only
to translate the existing ICD-9 version of the inclusion criteria; there is no intention of changing
the description of major trauma cases that qualify for entry into the registry.
