*Please see student schedule to determine who their health teacher is and determine during which quarter they will
be taking health.*
Comprehensive health education is taught for a term of 9 weeks. Knowledge, concepts, skills, and strategies essential to
making healthful decisions are presented to promote lifelong health and well-being. Certified Health Education teachers
implement a variety of learning activities to promote and practice wellness skills and health literacy. The development of
lifelong positive health-related attitudes and behaviors are emphasized to promote self-reliance and self-regulation.
Course Content:
Topics from the following seven content areas will be included in the health education curriculum and each year students
will build on what was learned previously as content matures with grade level:







Mental and Emotional Health – 6th and 7th Grade Focus
Safety and Injury Prevention – 6th and 8th Grade Focus
Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs – 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Focus
Nutrition and Fitness – 8th Grade Focus
Personal and Consumer Health- 6th , 7th , and 8th Grade Focus
Family Life and Human Sexuality* - 7th and 8th Grade Focus
Disease Prevention and Control* - 7thth Grade Focus

*Parents may choose for their child not to receive instruction of the family life, human sexuality, disease prevention and
control units. Those students will receive alternate assignments to be completed as an independent study. Permission
forms to Opt out of the family life, human sexuality, disease prevention and control units are sent home with students
during the first week of school.
Grading Policy:
10% Homework
60% Formative Assessment (class work, quizzes, individual/group presentations)
30% Summative Assessments (unit tests, projects)
* Each assignment will have a due date. Due dates will be posted on the Promethean board, verbalized by Ms. Shields,
Ms. Bumbernick, or Mr. Herbold and/or posted on Edline. Due dates are the dates by which you are expected to submit
the assignment.
*Assignments submitted late will be penalized one letter grade.
*Assignments WILL NOT be accepted after the DEADLINE (date beyond which work will NOT receive credit) in
some cases, the DUE DATE and the DEADLINE will be the SAME DATE. After the deadline has passed, the student
will receive a zero on that assignment.
*Work that meets the minimum requirements will be graded no lower than 50%.
Turning in Assignments:
Do Nows – will be kept throughout the week in students’ notebooks. Students will hand the teacher their do Nows on
Fridays.
Homework – Students will turn all assignments directly to the teacher at the beginning of the class period.
Class work, projects, quizzes, tests, etc. – Students will turn in their assigned work directly to the teacher when the
assignment is due.
Re-teach/Reassess:
What may be reassessed (formatives and homework)
 Quizzes
 Class work
*It is the responsibility of the STUDENT to request a re-teach and a reassess. All retakes must be completed within a
week that the assignment was returned.
*Re-teach/Reassess may be done before or after school (See teacher).
*The grade for the reassessed work will be recorded and replace original grade.
Absent or Missed Work:
All students are responsible for making up their work during an excused absence.
Students with an unexcused absence will not be able to make up any missed work.
Students can:
 Pick up a copy of what was missed from the teacher before school, during their lunch period, or after school
*Students with an excused absence will have the same amount of days to make up their work as the amount of days they
were absent.

Office Hours
Students may make arrangements to meet with the teacher before or after school.
 Before school- 7:00am-7:50am
 After School- Please make arrangements with teacher.

Bring all class materials (notebook, lined paper, pencil or pen)
Respect others’ space and belongings
Practice effective listening
