Physical Education Syllabus (2015-2016) Eastern Middle School (301) 650-6650 The middle school physical education program focuses on health-related fitness, movement skills, tactical concepts, and personal and social responsibility. Each physical education unit challenges students to better understand the benefits of physical act ivity toward fitness, fundamentals of efficient movement in physical activity and sport, and the essentials of responsibility in a social setting. The learning tasks in physical education emphasize and teach problem-solving and decision-making skills. Students will participate in games and activities that promote fitness, develop tactical awareness, and indoctrinate social qualities. Wear safe and appropriate clothing for physical education. Demonstrate proper care and use of equipment. Cooperate with others in various group settings. Participate in a safe and effective manner. Follow the rules of the games and the classroom. Use appropriate language. Planned Units of Instruction: Invasion Games; Ultimate, Street Hockey, Team Handball, Lacrosse, and Soccer Wall and Net Games; Volleyball and Table Tennis Striking and Fielding Games; Softball Target Games; Archery and Rec Games Personal Fitness; Fitness Testing, Wrestling, and Track & Field Learning Skills: Assessments - reflect the student’s progress and understanding of the skill and concepts, not ability or inability of the individual student. Participation - asking questions, sharing ideas, bringing proper materials, active engagement during class, working cooperatively with partner / group. Assignment Completion - completing all work in a timely manner. (See due date/deadline). Learning skills are reported with the letter codes: C = Consistently O = Often S = Sometimes R = Rarely NI = Not Enough Information Grading Rubrics: o Socio-Emotional (Personal and Social Responsibility) - Each student will be graded based on the criteria established in the PSR rubric. Students may receive up to four (4) points per day/twenty (20) points per week. o Fitness and Coachability – Each student will be graded based on the criteria established in the Fitness rubric. Students may receive up to four (4) points per day/twenty (20) points per week. o All students that are unable, with a written excuse, to actively participate will be given an alternative assignment for that class period. o Learning progression differentiates tactical and skill assessments during units of instruction based on grade level and/or level of exposure. MCPS Grading Policy: Formative Assessments (60%) May include (but not limited to)… Skill / Tactical concepts (skill cues & performance, game play & strategies) Fitness concepts (analysis of fitness data, fitness goals for quarter, etc) Personal & Social responsibility (cooperative work with others, teamwork, sportsmanship, conflict resolution) Projects / presentations Summative Assessments (30%) May include (but not limited to)… Unit tests and Large Projects Skill / Tactical concepts (skill cues & performance, game play & strategies) Fitness concepts (analysis of fitness data, fitness goals for quarter, etc) Personal & Social responsibility (teamwork, sportsmanship, conflict resolution) Projects / presentations Homework (10%) May include (but not limited to)… Study guides Skill analysis Syllabus review Posters Vocabulary worksheets Tactical concepts Late and Missing Assignments: All classwork, homework, projects, quizzes, & tests will be handed to the teacher at the time they are due. Due dates (when an assignment is due) will be verbalized by your physical education teacher, and/or posted on Edline. Assignments submitted after the due date will be penalized one letter grade. Assignments will not be accepted after the deadline (date beyond which work will not receive credit). After the deadline has passed, the student will receive a zero on that assignment. Work that meets the minimum requirements will be graded no lower than 50%. If You Are Absent From Class: All students are responsible for making up any assignments or assessments during an excused absence. Students must schedule a time with their teacher to make up any assessments. Pick up a copy of what they missed from the teacher before school, during their lunch period, or after school. Students with an unexcused absence will not be able to make up any missed work. Revision of Student Work: The teacher determines which assignments may be re-taught or reassessed. It is the student’s responsibility to request a re-teach/re-assess. Re-teach/Reassess may be done before school or afterschool (schedule with your teacher). Student Uniforms: In the interest of health, safety, freedom of movement and protection of students’ clothing, students will be required to provide a change of clothing for physical education. This requirement is consistent with established Montgomery County Regulations. It is highly recommended that all students: o Begin changing for PE on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 o Provide their own t-shirt and shorts o Provide their own socks and athletic footwear (no high heels, sandals, boots, or cleats). o Provide a sweatshirt/sweater/or coat, and sweatpants when it’s cold outside. o Eastern has an online Spirit-wear Store for the purchase of PE uniforms. Physical Education Lockers: Each student will be assigned their own locker and locker combination. Students may not bring cameras or cell phones into the locker room. Students must lock up all belongings. Eastern Middle School is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Short and Long Term Medical Excuses: Temporary excuses from physical activity, for five (5) or fewer consecutive days, will be honored upon receipt of a note from the parent/guardian. These notes should specify the nature of the injury / illness, the duration of excuse, and what the child can or cannot do in PE. If your child needs to be excused for more than five (5) days, a physician’s statement is required, and students will be expected to participate in alternative assignments. Opportunities for Student Support Students may seek support from their Teacher before and after school. Students may seek support during “A” lunch. Please speak with you Teacher for additional days and times.
