MBHS Business Department Class Rules and Procedures 1. Absences and Make-up Work In order to be eligible for make-up work, you must produce documentation that your absence was indeed excused, and you must secure an “Absentee Slip” from Rene Byrd in the attendance office. Your absence must be documented as excused within 3 days of your return to school if you want to be eligible for the make-up work. In following the Mountain Brook High School “Code of Student Conduct,” absences will be handled in two ways: #1 If your absence is “Unexcused” you will NOT be given the opportunity to make-up homework/classwork, tests, quizzes, projects, etc. #2 If your absence is “Excused” you must request the work. Upon returning to school you will have three school days to complete and submit the missed assignments (tests, classwork, projects, etc.). If the work is not submitted within three days, a zero will be given for any missing assignment(s). Tests that are completed on computer will need to be made up during your free period in a business computer lab. NOTE: It is your responsibility to request make-up work. Do not assume that the business teachers will inform you about the work missed. NOTE: If you were given an assignment well in advance of your absence and you are absent on the day it is due, it is DUE the day you return to school from your absence. If your absence was unexcused, the business teachers will NOT accept the assignment for a grade. Therefore, do not procrastinate. You can’t always anticipate the “things” that might come up the day before work is due. Important Note: If you develop a pattern of being absent on days when major assignments or tests are due, even if the absence(s) is/are excused, I reserve the right to give an alternate method of assessment or to not accept the work until it can be verified that your habitual absenteeism is justified. 2. Late Work No Late Work will be accepted except for assignments that are worth 50 or more points. For these assignments the late penalty is a letter grade deduction from the final grade for each day late. You will not be allowed to use class time to go print an assignment to be turned in. Nor will you be allowed to come into class late with an assignment because you were in the process of printing in the library. 3. Tardies You are tardy to class if you enter class after the tardy bell has sounded. Detention will be assigned for every 3 tardies accumulated. 1|Page 4. Behavior “Respect is a two-way street”! Defiance and insubordination will NOT be tolerated. If you engage in behavior that is disruptive to the learning environment and your fellow classmates, you will be removed from class and not allowed to re-enter class until administration/your parents have been contacted. Cheating is a serious offense that involves a student gaining unfair advantage over other students. Areas of academic concern include examinations, out of class work, and plagiarism. Academic Dishonesty applies to any situation in which the student attempts to take credit where such credit has not been earned according to the criteria of the assignment. This is a serious offense and if verified, disciplinary action will be taken. Class discussions are incorporated into the class format. Your opinions are valuable to the class discussion. However, let me caution you on the way you express your opinions: The following will NOT be TOLERATED: 1. The use of profane language 2. Racial, religious, or other slurs meant to demean others 3. Any conversations or utterances that are deemed offensive by the business teachers or classmates. Adherence to all rules as stated in the Mountain Brook Code of Student Conduct will be enforced. This includes guidelines for dress and cell phones. Grading Procedures & iNow 5. Assessment Extra assignments will NOT be available to boost grades. Take advantage of those occasions when points are easy to earn. You will NOT be given a grade – You earn a grade! You and your parents have access to your grades 24/7 using the iNow resource. Therefore, there should not be any surprises as to how you received the grade printed on your report card. A weighted system will used in all business courses. Percentages are indicated on each teacher’s syllabus 6. iNow The iNow online grade book is updated frequently. When you see a “0” – ZERO – listed next to an assignment, it means you made a zero on the work because either you didn’t study or you failed to produce the work when it was due. If you see “MA” – Missing Assignment – next to an assignment, it means you were not in class when the work was due or we took a test, quiz, etc. “MA” averages as a zero. If you are eligible to makeup the work, then “MA” will be changed once the work has been completed & graded. 2|Page
