Syllabus Business Technology I 2015-2016 Instructor: Mrs. Amber Benson Three business credits are required to be a business completer. Course Description: This one-semester course is designed to give students the opportunity to master basic skills in the areas of data entry, word processing, database management, spreadsheet, presentation, Internet and E-mail. The basic features of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are covered. Course Goals: The prime objective of this course is to teach students to utilize computers as business tools. These computer applications will be presented to the class by using lecture/demonstration of each concept. After the introduction of each lesson daily, students will be given the responsibility for planning, designing and completing the assignment. As students work on these assignments, they will have individual monitoring and instruction, providing immediate feedback to reinforce correct procedure. Students will be expected to produce quality work, give attention to detail, and maintain a positive attitude. Publishing Accounting, Business GMetrix Skills Management System Management, Finance and Requirements: Business Law. Students enrolled in BT I are required to: Have a 3.0 overall average. Bring a 3-ring binder, paper, pencils, and assignments to class daily. Maintain a 3-ring binder, divided by sections and chapters, to include all handouts, notes, study questions, terms and worksheet pages. Maintain classroom behavior that provides themselves and other students with an environment in which optimum learning can take place. Class will start when the tardy bell rings. Student Evaluation: Periodic class discussions will be held to emphasize key points, check student understandings and prevent gaps in overall progress. Students will be evaluated throughout the semester using daily assignments, quizzes/tests, production projects, and citizenship. This is a Category Average evaluation system and will measure qualitative as well as quantitative aspects of student performance. Assessments (80%) 1. Test/Quizzes/ Projects: Performance and objective tests will be given and announced in advance. Students will complete Individual and team projects. 2. Timed Writings: The students will be given timed tests (1, 3, and 5 minutes) to check their speed and accuracy on the keyboard. Only the top five timed writings will be used in calculating grades. Course Activities (20%) 3. Classroom Assignment Completion: Students will be given an assignment to complete daily. Assignments will be worth varying points, based on difficulty and time involved. Class assignments will be chosen periodically for grading. The students will not be told ahead of time which ones will be turned in. 4. Citizenship: Based upon personal behavior, attitude, and time management, following of classroom rules, tardiness and truancies. Cheating will not be tolerated. School rules and guidelines will be followed. Student Organizations: Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) is a co-curricular component of the business program. This student organization enhances classroom instruction, develops leadership skills, and provides opportunities for professional growth and service. Business Technology students are strongly encouraged to be active FBLA members in order to participate in district, state, and national competitions and conferences. A membership fee of $15.00 is required. Fees can be paid online. You can find the link to pay on the MBHS website in the FBLA section.
