CAREER PROGRAMS OF STUDY RESOURCE CENTER
CAREER CLUSTERS OVERVIEW
Today’s information-based economy demands highly skilled individuals with the ability to work with people from different cultural and educational
backgrounds. Therefore, Montgomery County Public Schools, Career Pathway Programs (CPPs) strive to provide students with an education that combines
rigorous academic and technical study with the excitement of discovery through small learning communities and career- themed programs. With the support of
the business and higher-education communities, students apply their acquired skills and knowledge to make informed decisions concerning education, careers,
and a path toward lifelong learning.
The purpose of the career cluster model is to direct high school students toward focused programs of study that make their experiences more meaningful by
relating future goals to current course work. The MCPS career clusters are based on what students need to know and be able to do in order to graduate
prepared for further education and careers in the 21st century. The following are the 11 MCPS career clusters:
ARTS, HUMANITIES, MEDIA, AND COMMUNICATION
Arts, Humanities, Media, and Communications programs offer opportunities for students to pursue interests in careers related to art, music, drama,
and other creative expression. Students prepare to assume leadership roles in career majors that include, but are not limited to humanities, radio and
television broadcasting, film and cinema studies, public relations/advertising, fine arts, digital media, electronic media, graphic arts, printing, and
foreign language.
Radio, Television, Multimedia and Web, Multimedia Game, PrintEd
BIOSCIENCES, HEALTH SCIENCE, AND MEDICINE
Biosciences, Health Science, and Medicine programs offer rigorous academic curriculum combined with hands-on application of academic and
technical skills. Students have the opportunity to earn nationally-recognized industry certifications in this program. Students use state-of-the-art
technology and acquire new professional competencies as they participate in challenging internships at biotechnology firms and local hospitals.
Employment trends for this cluster are considered to be exceptionally strong for the next ten years.
Academy of Health Professions and Biosciences, Biomedical Sciences, Project Lead the Way, Biotechnology, Medical Careers
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE
Almost all organizations operate using similar business functions. These functions include hiring and training of staff, creating products or offering a
service, marketing and selling those products or services, and managing the financial operations and information created in the organization. Within
the Business Management and Finance cluster, students will be provided with opportunities to explore different careers and continuing education
paths. They will obtain valuable knowledge of career choices as they apply new learning’s in classrooms and workplaces. As lifelong learning takes
place for these students, the quality of life for the community, and society as a whole, will be raised.
Academy of Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Marketing

COLLEGE/CAREER RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (CCRD)
CCRD prepares high school students for a competitive edge in our global society with academic, technical, and 21st century skills.
CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT
Information about the Construction and Development career cluster can be found on the Montgomery County Student Foundations website under
the Construction Trades Foundation.
Principals of Architecture and CAD Technology, Carpentry, Electricity, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Masonry,
Plumbing
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND CHILD STUDIES
Due to changing family dynamics and workplace demands, employment opportunities continue to grow in careers related to children. In addition, the
nationwide shortage of educators affords students excellent opportunities in the classroom as well as in the business world. Students prepare for
occupations which include, but are not limited to, teachers, teaching assistants, trainers, instructional coordinators, and administrators. Students who
enroll in Education, Training, and Child Studies programs engage in authentic experiences that prepare them for careers in these rapidly-expanding
professions.
Early Child Development, Teacher Academy of Maryland
ENGINEERING, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, AND MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES
Engineering, Scientific Research, and Manufacturing Technologies programs offer opportunities for students to pursue interests at various levels
within the engineering and research fields by experiencing and engaging in engineering practices. According to the National Alliance for Preengineering Programs, by 2010, half of all baby boomers will be gone, from the workforce. By 2020, the other half will be gone leaving a critical gap in
the engineering fields. These two pathways prepare students to be successful in engineering fields like aerospace, architecture, chemical, civil,
electrical, environmental, manufacturing, material, mechanical, nuclear and transportation.
Advanced Engineering Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
ENVIRONMENTAL, AGRICULTURAL, AND NATURAL RESOURCES
Programs in the Environmental, Agricultural, and Natural Resource cluster offer opportunities for students to pursue their interests in the green
industry which may include, but are not limited to, fisheries management, wildlife management, soil and waste management, forestry, civil
engineering, landscape design, environmental controls, environmental engineering, research and testing, earth sciences, agriculture, aquaculture, and
horticulture.
Certified Professional Horticulturist
HUMAN AND CONSUMER SERVICES, HOSPITALITY, AND TOURISM
Programs in the Human and Consumer Services, Hospitality, and Tourism cluster offer opportunities for students to pursue interests in careers related
to the largest, fastest growing industry in the United States. The hospitality/food industry offers opportunities for dynamic career paths in high skill,
managerial and entrepreneurial positions worldwide. Employers in this $800 billion industry include the government, major food companies,
5
restaurants, hotels, resorts, cruise lines, hospitals, and universities. The consumer services industry is growing to address the increasing needs of a
work-oriented society. Through hands-on activities, laboratory work, and field experiences, students relate academic competencies to industry
requirements.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
Information Technology is one of America’s fastest growing industries, encompassing computers, software, telecommunications products and
services, Internet and online services, systems integration and professional services companies. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that, by 2016,
the United States will require more than 1.3 million new highly-skilled IT workers ranging from computer scientists and engineers to systems analysts
and programmers.
Academy of Information Technology: Computer Programming, Information Resource Design, Networking, Cisco Academy, Network

LAW, GOVERNMENT, PUBLIC SAFETY, AND ADMINISTRATION
Law, Government, Public Safety, and Administration programs offer students the academic background and critical thinking skills that enable them to
enter postsecondary programs and access employment in this career field. Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) develops future leaders and
offers students many opportunities for college scholarships and military academy nominations. Employment demand for jobs in this cluster continues
to grow.
Justice, Law and Society
TRANSPORTATION, DISTRIBUTION, AND LOGISTICS
Information about the Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics career cluster can be found on the Montgomery County Student Foundations
website under the Construction Trades Foundation.
Automotive Body Repair and Painting, Automotive Service Assistant Program, Automotive Technology
These clusters provide real-world learning experiences, including internships, while maintaining high academic standards. Students come to realize that
graduation is a stepping stone to their lives beyond high school. They also acquire the skills, tools, and self- confidence to realize their dreams and goals.
Additionally, the 11 career clusters allow business leaders to be partners in education by involving them in the development of curriculum that includes industry
skills and standards to meet certification requirements. Each career cluster has a Cluster Advisory Board (CAB) that collaborates with MCPS, Montgomery
College (MC), and other colleges and universities to align the high school and college curriculum to promote a smooth transition from high school to postsecondary education.
Each career cluster includes one or more CPPs. Most of these programs have an articulation agreement that details the courses that MCPS students must
complete with a grade of B or better to receive college credit at MC and other institutions of higher learning. Completing a CPP at a MCPS high school and
6
articulating credits to college benefits students in several ways. It gives them a head start on their higher education while at the same time saves tuition and
book fees since these courses are completed prior to college enrollment. Essentially, these College articulated college credits are FREE.
This brochure lists each career cluster and its respective CPPs at both MCPS and associated colleges. After reviewing this information, it will be evident which
MCPS courses articulate to programs and courses at MC and other postsecondary institutions. In addition, the process of articulating credits and the forms that
are necessary for successful articulation will be clear.
PROGRAM OF STUDY
The Program of Study (POS) provides students with a planned, sequential program that blends academic, technical, and workplace skills to prepare for college
or a career. The POS contains a minimum of four credits and includes relevant courses and a capstone experience such as an internship or a college course.
Many POS may lead to the attainment of industry/professional certification (e.g., through formal assessments or course hours). POS are designed
collaboratively with colleges, including Montgomery College, and some programs and courses have articulation agreements. An articulation agreement
establishes the process for students to earn college credit for courses completed in high school. If there are articulation agreements associated with a POS, an
award form will be included.

Program Articulation for the Career and Technology Education
Graphic Communications (PrintED)
The Maryland State Department of Education
Montgomery College
INTRODUCTION: In the past several years, technological advances have changed the processes and
equipment used in a growing number of technical fields. Today’s workforce is confronted with diverse
and complex technical concepts and equipment and must have a broad understanding of the
comprehensive principles that govern the behavior of the systems and subsystems that make up the
work environment.
The College Tech Prep Program is a partnership between Maryland State Department of Education and
Montgomery College. It is designed to provide a rigorous, relevant curriculum for students who wish to
explore or prepare for technical careers in today’s evolving work-world.
Administration, curriculum coordinators, and the respective faculty and staff of both institutions have
examined the course competencies and content taught and have agreed, for the maximum benefit of
students, to articulate the Maryland Career and Technology Education Graphic and Communications
(PrintED) Program of Study to Montgomery College’s Computer Publishing and Printing Management
Associate of Applied Science degree program.
CERTIFICATION: Students who wish to enter Montgomery College will present an official high school
transcript attached to a completed Articulation Agreement Credit Award Form verifying successful
completion of the articulated courses with a grade of B or better to the Montgomery College, College
Tech Prep Program, 900 Hungerford Drive, Suite 160, Rockville, MD 20850. To receive credit, students
must enroll at Montgomery College within two years of completion of an articulated program with

Graphic Communications (PrintED) Course Descriptions
Program Description
The Graphics Communication Program (PrintED) is designed to give students an overall understanding of
the graphics communication industry and its major operations while teaching competencies that lead to
national PrintED certification. PrintED is administered by the Graphic Arts Education and Research
Foundation (GAERF), and is a national accreditation and certification program based on industry
standards for graphic communications courses of study at the secondary and postsecondary levels. In
Maryland, PrintED is supported by the Printing and Graphics Association MidAtlantic,
(www.pgama.com), an industry organization that assists with professional development, curriculum,
work based learning, and the SkillsUSA contest. Students can gain certification in up to seven areas:
Digital File Preparation, Digital File Output, Offset Press Operations, Binding and Finishing, Digital
Production Printing, and Advanced Graphics and Printing.
The Graphics Communication Program - PrintED consists of three components that students are
required to complete: 1) The program of study which consists of the Introduction to Graphic
Communications course and two or more PrintED courses; 2) The PrintED competencies for each course
(these range from 36 to 103 competencies per course, and students must master 80% of the
competencies); 4) PrintED end-of-course certification exams.
Secondary Courses
Introduction to Graphic Communications
This required foundation course provides an overview of the graphic communications industry.
Students demonstrate 103 competencies while developing an overall understanding of the industry and
its major operations.
Digital File Preparation
18
In this course, students demonstrate 80 competencies that are procedures required in each step of file
preparation. These include basic design elements and principles, file construction, fonts, page layout,
image capture, illustration, and PDF creation. Many of the competencies require students to describe,
identify, explain, measure and/or distinguish file-related issues. Approximately half the competencies
require students to demonstrate various skills in creating and exporting images and laying out a page in
appropriate software.
Digital File Output
The 40 competencies in this accreditation area require that students have an understanding of the steps
needed to prepare a client file for printing, from preflighting through platemaking. Most of the
competencies require students to define specific activities and identify various procedures and
equipment components. Students are also expected to prove their ability to perform the following
functions: repair a native digital file, repair a PDF, make a folding dummy, make a digital hard and soft
proof, and output a digital file to a platesetter.
Offset Press Operations
This course covers 42 competencies that ensure a sound knowledge of platemaking, ink, paper, and
fountain solution used for offset lithography. Some competencies require students to identify press
parts and basic operations procedures, while 20 of the competencies require student to demonstrate
their ability to perform makeready steps, print different types of one- and two-color jobs, evaluate and
adjust print quality, color measurement, and perform clean-up functions.
Digital Production Printing
Students master 36 competencies in digital production printing that are designed to teach concepts and
competencies that ensure that the student is able to operate any vendor's digital press. Students will
understand and apply the digital workflow concepts to print production. The competencies range from
introductory skills such as describing the types of jobs that use a digital press to more advanced skills
such as printing two- and four-color jobs, printing and finishing a perfect-bound booklet and printing a
variable data print job.
Binding and Finishing
Students master 57 competencies to learn about the equipment, materials and procedures for folding,
cutting, stitching, adhesive binding, case binding, foil stamping coating and laminating, and spiral and
wire binding. Students demonstrate the use of folding equipment to make different folds and perform
preventative maintenance on folders and cutters. They demonstrate knowledge of paper types as well
as the tools and procedures for quality control. Students identify and solve common bindery and
finishing problems.
