October Kindergarten News As the weather gets cooler, please make sure your student is dressed for the temperature. A sweater or jacket (and soon a coat) are necessary for your child’s comfort because we continue with outdoor recess even as the weather gets colder. Also remember to send your student with appropriate footwear on PE days. The office sent (via the green folders) a parent/child reunification form that they need completed and returned. Please send in your forms as soon as possible. When kindergarten students arrive in the morning, they are allowed to play in the fenced area until the whistle at 8:55, or they may line up on the blacktop and wait for their class. Remember to label all items with your child’s first and last name. The school’s Lost-and-Found is starting to grow. At Back-to-School Night parents were given the opportunity to sign up for a conference on our early release days Nov. 11 & 12. If you did not sign up for a time, please contact your child’s teacher. As more students opt to purchase a school lunch, please make sure your child knows his or her lunch number. A first time buyer has help getting through the line, but then the students go through on their own. If you want your child to pick a particular entrée or side dish, please discuss this at home. What’s Going On In Class? Reading: Students will demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print, know and apply grade-level phonics in decoding words, make predictions, and identify major events in a story (characters, setting, problem, solution). October sight words: my, we, and, at, here, can, like Writing: Students will demonstrate command of conventions (capitalization, punctuation, and spelling), spell simple words phonetically, and print upper and lower case letters correctly. Oct. 12—Open House, Columbus Day, 9-11 K students wear red, white, and blue for symbols parade (9:15) Science: Students will describe changes in weather (temperature, precipitation, wind, etc.), and identify the effect of weather changes on daily activities. Oct. 16—No school for students and teachers Social Studies: Students will discuss symbols and practices associated with the United States, identifying people important to the American political system. Oct. 25 Back-to-School Classic Race Oct. 30 -Halloween Parade (1:30ish), followed by parties Nov. 2—Professional day for teachers, no school for students
