Fifth Grade News September 2015 Reading Math 5 This month, students: This month, students: Describe how narrator’s point of view influences how events are described. Identify story elements and plot by analyzing characters’ actions and their effect on story events. Identify theme/central message (underlying message) based on characters’ responses to events and challenges (conflict or problem that a character faces). Draw conclusions about characters based on evidence from the text using direct quotes Compact Math 5/6 This month, students: Writing This month, students: Analyze plot elements, theme, conflict, setting, and point of view to write an adventure story Develop a character and character’s response for use in an adventure story Edit and revise writing Locate and select resources to meet an information need. Organize and develop ideas for informative writing. Engage in word study focusing on particular spelling pattern. (Words Their Way) Complete weekly practice exercises to reinforces assigned spelling pattern Use signal words (e.g. however, similarly, in addition) to show agreement or disagreement. Use text to identify the meaning of homographs (e.g. tear/tear, contract/contract). Identify sentences or quotes that use hyperbole (exaggerations) to tell about characters or events. Explore scaling and resizing. Use visual models to determine the product of a fraction and a whole number, as well as a fraction and a fraction. Calculate area of rectangles whose sides have fractional lengths. Social Studies This month, students: Word Study, Spelling, and Grammar This month, students: Estimate and use the standard algorithm to multiply multi-digit whole numbers. Identify, write, and evaluate expressions that record calculations with whole numbers. Investigate causes of contemporary and colonial conflicts. Identify and analyze events leading to the American Revolution. Identify turning points in Revolutionary War. Analyze roles and viewpoints of leaders during war.
