What are we learning this month?
Math
Writing
During March, students have been using
Cuisenaire Rods®, pattern blocks, number
lines, fractions strips and fraction circles
to identify equivalent fractions and
compare fractions. During the last week
of the marking period, they will again
work with multiplication and division
fluency including multiplying 1-digit
numbers by multiples of 10 and using
place value strategies and the associative
property. We have continued to practice
our multiplication and division facts, so
please make sure to review them with
your child at home. We will have periodic
graded fluency checks throughout the
month.
Math Magician, Multiplication:
Students will continue to revise,
edit, and publish their own realistic
fiction storybooks. Students will
also design a cover and illustrate
the story.

Reading
We have been identifying change in our
literature study groups with historical
fiction novels. Our focus has been to
study the change in characters,
relationships, and setting, as well as
identifying the theme. In the last quarter
of the marking period students will
develop critical thinking skills by
reading, evaluating, and discussing a
Junior Great Books selection. Students
will also continue reading and
responding to informational text
weekly using “Time for Kids”
magazines and other articles.
Social Studies
Students will continue to explore the
culture of the Aztecs. We will read to
be informed about how they modified
the land to meet their needs and how
the Aztecs spread their culture along
trade routes.
