Matakuliah Tahun Versi : G1072 Reading 1 : 2005 : revisi 0 Pertemuan 7 Scanning 1 Learning Outcomes Pada akhir pertemuan ini, diharapkan mahasiswa akan mampu : • Menggunakan ‘context’ untuk memperkirakan arti kata dalam bacaan 2 Outline Materi • Bacaan: Cross-Cultural Conversation • Figuring Out New Vocabulary from Context • Recognizing the Details of Opinions (scanning) • Discussion 3 Scanning • Many people think they need to read a text from beginning to end to find relevant information, e.g. for assignments. • However this is generally unnecessary and often a waste of time. • Developing effective reading strategies helps you locate specific information in a text without having to 'read' it. 4 Scanning • These strategies allow you to find topics that you may need to read more intensively. The skill is to read with more focus. • These efficient reading skills are necessary for locating which areas of the text you need to read intensively. 5 Scanning Here are four different kinds of reading. • Skimming - running the eyes over quickly, to get the gist • Scanning - looking for a particular piece of information • Extensive reading - longer texts for pleasure and needing global understanding • Intensive reading - shorter texts, extracting specific information, accurate reading for detail. 6 Scanning Definition: • Scanning is a reading skill used to locate key or specific information quickly, e.g. dates, numbers, examples & definitions. Why scan? • To pick up on detail • To fill in gaps in your knowledge (give depth) 7 Scanning Steps for scanning • Look for key words, or words that are repeated • Look for definitions • Look for highlighted words, e.g. words in bold or italic • Look for numbers, e.g. dates and statistics • Look for examples, including diagrams 8
