March/April 2009 Klamath Clover Co-Op Klamath County 4-H Department Jed’s Journal Hey what do you know it’s Spring Break already! How in the world did that happen? Our Beef division has already had their spring weigh-in so they are off and running on their projects, good work crew! I imagine many of you will be off on some sort of adventure during your reprieve from classes and school work. Have fun and be safe in your adventures. How about I give you all a little run down of our Rural/Urban Exchange trip? This year our trip to Portland was pretty packed with interesting things to do. We arrived at the Sunnyside Environmental School the evening of the 25th and our Klamath crew: Sam Johnson, James Goheen, Jacob Klein, and Zane Riggs, all met up with their host families for a potluck dinner then dispersed into the urban wilds of north- east Portland with the families. The following day the crew went to class with their host brothers/ sisters and joined in on a field trip to the Chinese Garden for a very informative tour. The next day the group went down to the Union Gospel Mission and did a community service project helping the mission prepare for their large Easter Event for the homeless. That evening we capped the day’s adventures off with a tour of the Shang Hai Tunnels, the Portland Underground. Interesting to say the least, little fact for those that were not there at the peak of the Shang Hi period, about 1870s in one year’s time 3000 people were abducted and forced into service. That Saturday everyone took part in activities with the host families abroad, and Sunday we loaded up and came back to Klamath. All involved had a good time and learned several things along the way. The group will be doing two separate presentations of this year’s exchange, one to the Klamath County Leaders Association May 18, and the other to Klamath County Rotary Club. 4-H Staff Jed [email protected] Jenny [email protected] Agents and Office Staff Willie Riggs Patty Case Chanda Engel And here is a thought to leave you with: Brian Charlton Susan Honea Lori Fernlund "Everything will be okay in the end. This opportunity is part of the Oregon 4-H International Exchange Youth Development Program. Depending on the host country, this work could include helping with camping programs, studying youth development is- sues, or working with formation of 4-H type clubs in various settings around the country. Helping young people explore, appreciate, and value what people next door, across town and around the world have in common, and what makes them unique is critically important in society today. Individuals who travel to Finland, Germany or Taiwan this summer will have the chance to make lifelong international friends as they live and explore their host country with their host families. Program participants will also be working with the youth development program in their host country. for school credit for this experience. It is a 4 week exchange, and the Japanese youth will arrive the 22nd of July. This is a great program, and in the past Klamath County has been one of the leading participating counties. Round Robin Showmanship Clinic 2009 There will be a showmanship clinic June 16, 2009 at the fairgrounds sheep/hog barn and the beef barn 5-7:30 p.m. for animals of all sizes (rabbits to horse). This is a round robin style clinic. You will learn hands-on how to show all the animals that are exhibited at the fair. Feel free to come when you can! Klamath 4-Hers Go To Portland for Urban/Rural Exchange It was pretty fun! When we got to Portland we went to Sunnyside Environmental School and met with the families, ate dinner with them and then we went our separate ways. There were four boys that went on the trip, me, Sam Johnson, Jacob Klein, and James Goheen. Sam and James went last year so they stayed by themselves while me and Jacob stayed together because it was our first year. The day after we arrived we went to Sunnyside for regular class days except that day our class got to go to the Chinese Gardens. The Chinese Gardens were supposed to be like a peace thing that helped people relax and we got to learn a lot about that and it was actually quite peaceful for something in the city. After the tour of the Chinese Gardens we went back to school for about 5 minutes before it let out and we went home. Page 3 The next day the Klamath kids and their hosts went to the mission where we got to cook for homeless people and roll napkins. After that we ate lunch and toured the mission for about an hour and after the whole mission part we walked around the city, went to the mall, I know that sounded real girlish but we went to explore and have hot chocolate not to go shopping although one of the hosts did spill hot chocolate on James so he did have to go shopping. Well we messed around for about 2 hours and then took MAX to the station and then we went to the Shang Hai tunnels which stored prisoners from bars, and the prisoners would be put to work 24/7 on ships. After that we went home. On Saturday, the hosts took the kids to explore and to show them what fun things you can do in a city. So, Jacob and I went to the Malibu Raceway to race little go carts and we did that for about a half hour and after that we rode the TRAM which is a mid air transport and my hosts drove Jacob and I around the city then we went home and the next day we left for home. My family that I stayed with was just what I asked for which was fun and entertaining and they were great people to stay with. The school and the teaching was very different because the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade kids only switched on 3 days a week instead of 5 like us at Henley and they also had classes with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade kids where, also at Henley, we only have either 7th or 8th grade kids per class but not in the same class. All in all I was just really glad to be back home. Submitted by Zane Riggs Klamath Clover Co-Op Have you ever wondered what other clubs are up to? Please read on to hear what is happening in a few of our Klamath County 4-H clubs over the past couple of months. We always look forward to hearing from you all, so please keep the articles and pictures coming! Club News 40 Swiners 4-H Road Trip In February, Lake Peterson and I went to Oregon State University with our leader, Diane Keith, and several other club members, to attend an Oregon Pork Producers seminar held at the OSU vet clinic. During the seminar, we watched a necropsy of a pig that had died of pneumonia. It was interesting to see the internal system of a pig and to be familiarized with their body parts. We learned about feeding, raising and showing our market hogs. We learned about different kinds of tools to use to show our pigs, such as; whips, canes, pvc pipes, and show sticks. My favorite was probably a cane. We also learned that heat lamps that are white are hotter than red lamps and might be better for keeping our baby pigs warm; but must be used carefully to avoid setting a fire. Farm. To prevent spreading bacteria or disease while touring the pig farm, we wore special plastic boots. We saw a pig named Chester who kept putting his front feet on the wall to see what was going on and to get food treats. Chester hams it up for the camera During our tour of the vet clinic we saw a camel that had just given birth to a calf, but unfortunately due to complications the calf did not make it! We also saw a huge bull and llamas. Up in the classrooms, we saw several skeletons which included a beaver, a horse and a cow. We had enough time to go to Reser’s Stadium. It was really cool! We had a blast swimming at the motel pool. Our club members are a lot of fun. We think that we got to know each other more and we had a great time together. Submitted by Michael Barrett and Lake Peterson We also went to the Gourly Pig Horse Clubs Help Out At Farm Expo 2009 On February 24 and 25 a few of our horse clubs represented Klamath County 4-H at the 2009 Farm Expo. Those present to help out in the horse booth were Dani Decker, Shelly Epperly, Alisa and Ed Gailey, Madison Epperly, Stephanie Flecken, Devon and Mallory Howresko and Zack Gailey. Also present were Sassy the pony and Nelly the Arab. We all Page 4 had a lot of fun sharing about horses to the school children that came through and to the general public during the evening. Thank you to everyone who put on the Farm Expo this year, for feeding us and for offering such a great atmosphere to share about horses.
