Jed’s Journal
Well 4-H crew summer has come and gone! This 2009 Fair Season was
a good one, you all did very well at our county fair and should be very
proud of your project work I certainly am proud of you all. For those
that went on to State Fair this year, whether it was with a static exhibit,
fashion revue, food, or livestock those of you that had something made
a very good showing for Klamath County! This year for State Fair I also
had the privilege of watching many of you during your respective competitions, as I was on staff for Horse Fair and rest of State Fair as well.
However now Fair season has come to a close and that as well brings a
close to the 4-H year as of September 2009, and at the same time
brings to light the new year beginning October 1st! The new 4-H year is
bringing a change or two to things here in the Basin and around the
State as you will read more about them as you go through the Clover.
This year is going to be even better than the last, that’s what we are all
shooting for each and every time around, we look back and say “that
was good” and look forward and say “let’s make it better” after all that
is 4-H “ To make the best better!” For those returning members and
leaders WELCOME BACK for another year and for those new members
and leaders just getting started WELCOME to the program in Klamath
County - we are happy to have you.
The other thing to mention as well is we all know that the end of summer also meant the beginning of the school year so it is time for you all
to flex your academic muscle once again as well. I want to wish you all
a wonderful start to your new school year, make the best of it 4-H’ers!
Here is a little bit of school trivia for you, this year 1/5 of the incoming
student body to OSU are past 4-H members and that is pretty amazing.
For those of you playing fall sports of some kind, do your best, play
fair, and have fun! Any of you that have been or are headed into the
field on various hunting trips this fall a big wish of GOOD LUCK to you
as well, I know I am crossing my fingers for some fresh venison this fall.

It is once again time to wrap up the old year and prepare for the
new 4-H year. A parent can also be a 4-H leader, this is not new. But
many parents do not take advantage of this opportunity, or don’t feel
comfortable with the role, or for whatever reason they just choose not
to. However, as we make a fresh start we would just like to remind
everybody that this can take some of the burden off of the main club
leaders and help keep more parents in the loop if they want to
complete the process of becoming a 4-H volunteer. This can help clubs
by reducing the number of “I didn’t know that” and “nobody told me”
complaints which will hopefully help make the entire year run more
smoothly! The cost to enroll as a leader is still only $1 which covers
the accident insurance premium. How the clubs choose to incorporate
additional leaders will still be left up to the individual dynamics of each
club; so really nothing will change except that more people will be
given the chance to get more information from our office. Please
discuss this with the parents in your club and let them know this is a
way for them to be more involved.
We have scheduled a new leader’s training on Wednesday,
October 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Extension Office at 3328 Vandenberg
Road. We would like to encourage all interested parties to attend this
training and help get the new year off to a positive start!
Pre-registration is not required, however we would appreciate it so we
can prepare the needed materials. Please call 883-7131 or e-mail
[email protected] to sign up!
Fundraising opportunity
For clubs looking to get a head start on fundraising for the new year,
Quail Valley Farms, Inc. is a company with headquarters in Medford
which supplies fresh fruit to organizations for fundraising. Campaigns
can be run from October through mid-February. You can review their
program at www.fundraising-fruit.com or call toll-free 1-877-489-0535
for more information.

HIGH DESERT LEADERSHIP RETREAT 2010
Some of the winter opportunities are starting to come to light - the
High Desert Leadership Retreat is already taking shape. This is a wonderful event for youth to attend and learn some leadership skills as
well as a chance for them to meet and engage with youth from other
eastern Oregon counties at one central location for a 3 day adventure.
This event will take place at Eagle Crest just outside of Redmond, OR
January 15-18, 2010. Not only will our 4-H’ers get a chance to attend
some fun and interesting classes there is also a talent show and a
dance one of the evenings. The youth are put into groups of roughly 6
-7 kids and one chaperone per cabin; the kids shop for and cook their
own meals the whole time. It’s a great chance to try things out and
very empowering for the youth. Registration materials will be available
early in November so look for them to be at the extension office then.
For more information regarding HDLR give Jed a call at 883-7131.
NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS
Each year the state 4-H program sends a delegation to Washington
DC/Chevy Chase, MD to attend the National 4-H Conference. This is an
amazing opportunity to see the monuments/museums in DC, meet
4-H'ers from all over the United States, learn to ride the metro
(subway), and gain skills to make the Oregon 4-H program better.
This year it looks like we will able to send four delegates. The cost to
the member is $200 plus incidentals, all other costs (about $1100) are
covered. This is not an honorary trip but a working opportunity.
Members will get to meet with our elected officials on Capitol Hill and
talk with them about the 4-H program; they are also expected to be
active participants in their county/the Oregon 4-H program.
Applications are due to the State 4-H office Oct. 30, 2009 and the
conference is held March 20-25, 2010 (Spring Break). If you are
interested in applying, applications can be found at
http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/national-conference.

NATIONAL 4-H WEEK will take off with a speedy start on October
4th, as the 4-H emblem makes its debut appearance in a NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series race. The well-known national icon will be featured
on the ‘TV panel’ of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet driven by Jeff Gordon
at Kansas Speedway that day. The placement of the 4-H clover on the
No. 24 Chevrolet was made possible through a generous donation by
DuPont, sponsor of both the No. 24 team and of 4-H.
The 4-H youth development movement began more than 100
years ago. It evolved from rural youth programs created by land-grant
college and university researchers and the United States Department
of Agriculture to introduce new technology to what was then a
country of primarily rural communities. We now have over 5.9 million
youth participating in our programs!
The 4-H Program, through the OSU Extension Service, has access to
experts in all program areas to provide guidance and information to
help members and volunteers get the most out of their 4-H projects.
The Klamath Basin Research & Extension Center is only a phone call
away and is backed by the experience and expertise of the staff of over
140 offices statewide as well as a network of Extension agents in
neighboring states. The 4-H program is only a part of the Extension
Service so if you have a question about agriculture, horticulture, family
and community matters, forestry, natural resources, marine science —
almost anything imaginable — give us a call. It’s what the OSU Extension Service is here for! Seek out the resources available to you!

URBAN - RURAL EXCHANGE 2010
It is early yet to set things in motion for Urban-Rural Exchange 2010
but it is never too early to start looking ahead on your calendars. This
year the inbound portion of the program, where we receive the youth
from Portland here in Klamath County, will be March 18-22, 2010. The
outbound portion will take place April 21-25, 2010. This year the program is shaping up to be even better than before! For the inbound
part here this year folks please help the program by encouraging our
Farmers and Ranchers to consider hosting a couple of youth for the
week. For our youth that choose to go to Portland in April the program up there will be slightly more formal than before with many exciting endeavors packed into the schedule. Again this is just a note to
get the program on the radar for everyone.
SHOOTING SPORTS LEADERS TRAINING
For those of you leaders who have interest in helping jump start our
shooting sports program in Klamath County the next Oregon training
for leaders will not be until Spring 2010 unfortunately. However, out
of state trainings are an option and below are the links for one in
Washington State and one in California this fall. Please, I encourage
those of you with interest to attend and become certified for 4-H
Shooting Sports, we have a lot of youth in Klamath County that would
greatly benefit from a large and thriving program - we just need leaders.
Oregon folks are always welcome to attend trainings in WA!
Trainings are coming up in October and folks from Oregon are
welcome to attend. October 3-4 features Archery and Rifle in Mt.
Vernon. October 9-11 will feature the full training with youth development, risk management, resource development and archery for the Saturday range instruction; the subsequent Saturdays will feature the various disciplines in range instruction: Oct. 17 is Rifle; Oct. 31 is Pistol;
and Nov.7 is Shotgun in Colfax. All are posted on the website
http://4h.wsu.edu/projects/shooting.htm.

Evaluation and goal setting go hand-in-hand!
Think back on your 4-H experience last year. When you are evaluating
your project and preparing to set goals for the upcoming year, ask
“What did I learn from my project last year and what do I hope to gain
from completing another project this year?” It seems when we evaluate a project we place too much emphasis on winning and losing or the
amount an animal sold for at the auction. If the only goal is to win or
sell an animal for a lot of money, perhaps we need to make some
adjustments in our goals and in understanding the benefits that we are
gaining from 4-H and exhibiting their projects.
Ideally, 4-H projects should be a tool to gain life skills that will impact
the youth participant for life. If the correct balance between time and
energy is spent by youth and adults together, these projects can help
Page 8
September/October 2009
Klamath Clover Co-Op
our young people learn basic life skills and eventually help them
develop into better citizens. If a parent’s goal is to invest in the future
and to help their child develop as a person, learn responsibility and
goal setting, and gain knowledge about their projects, then 4-H is a low
cost investment!
Here is a sampling of the life skills that 4-H youth can learn:
getting along with others
sportsmanship
responsibility
attention to details
decision making
self-evaluation
goal setting
appreciation
As you write your 4-H story for this year and set your goals for next
year, it is ok to be proud of a blue ribbon and if you are disappointed
with less, that is ok also, but focus on what you did to make the blue
ribbon happen, or what you need to do better to improve next year.
Your goal should not be to win your class - break that down to
spending more time practicing and getting instruction from people
who can help you. Know what your strengths and weaknesses were in
the previous year so you know where to focus your energies in the
coming year. If you want to meet your goals, something as ambiguous
as “I want to win my class” is not very attainable because only one person can be first place so it is very possible even with the best preparation that someone else may win on that day; however if your goal is to
spend a certain amount of time each day working on your project then
that is very concrete and you can chart your progress throughout the
year and know if you are going to be able to meet your goal or if you
have gotten off track and need to re-commit yourself. Along the way,
you may be pleasantly surprised to find that your project seems to be
improving from the previous year!
By setting clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the
achievement of those goals. You can see progress in what might previously have seemed impossible. By setting goals, you will also raise
your self-confidence as you recognize your ability and competence in
achieving the goals that you have set.
