Jed’s Journal It seems that mother nature cannot make up her mind whether winter or spring has precedence! Aside from our early cold spell, it has been an unusually warm winter. I am sure most of our 4-legged friends are appreciating the unusually balmy weather; at least I know my horses are enjoying this mild winter. My dog, however, seems to adamantly disagree with the fair weather, she had a great time playing in the snow while it lasted. I suppose we shall see how much pull she has in high places to get more snow! On to more serious business...the nicer weather certainly brings to mind that spring will be upon us very soon, and with that brings an increased rigor to our schedules. As you read through the newsletter please take a minute to jot down some of the dates related to your projects or interests beyond your specific program areas. Please feel free to give me a call if you have some information or an event you would like to share with the rest of the county. All 4-Hers are very interested in the many good things contributed to the county throughout the year. As I have done in the last couple of newsletters, I will mention the Intermediate and Senior member opportunities coming down the line for Klamath County this year. Among them are: ♦ SWOJLA ♦ Klamath/Lake County Rendezvous at the Ranch ♦ Summer Conference 2010 ♦ Youth exchange programs All these opportunities are explained later in the newsletter. Contact me and we can get you started in your chosen activity. I will close this portion of the newsletter and bid you all well in the coming months. Mark your calendar now! ♦ The National 4-H Master Shooting Sports Train-the-Trainer session will be May 10-15, 2010 in Grand Junction, Colorado. If you are interested in helping this program succeed please give Jed a call at 541-883-7131. 4-H Outdoor Skills Rendezvous July 20-24, 2010, at the Oregon 4-H Center in Salem The Oregon 4-H Outdoor Skill Rendezvous is a residential camping opportunity for youth in grades 9 through 12 interested in enhancing their proficiency in shooting sports, sport fishing, outdoor survival, and challenge and adventure. Youth attending the Rendezvous can choose from a menu of outdoor skill classes that include: safe and responsible use of firearms, angling skills and tackle crafting, orienteering with GPS and compass, outdoor survival skills, and much more! The fee for the Outdoor Skills Rendezvous is $155 until May 1, 2010; late registration is $180 between May 2- June1, 2010 . Contact Jed Smith at 541-883-7131 or [email protected] for registration forms and further details. Page 4 January/February 2010 Klamath Clover Co-Op Bridges and Maps For those of you interested in modern mapping systems such as G.I.S. (geographic information system) please take this opportunity to come and learn as we create a map of our county 4-H program. That is just a start, from there the sky is the limit. We can create maps of other interest areas as well! The class will be Friday, February 12 from 9:00 a.m. - Noon. Jed will also instruct a bridge-building class…come in and build a bridge made out of various materials, and learn a little about bridge design and construction. Please call and reserve a spot today; there will be a $5.00 cost to cover provided materials. The class will be Thursday, March 4 from 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. in the Extension Office Auditorium. (Please note, this is a revised date & time.) For either of these fun and educational hands-on opportunities call Misty at 541-883-7131 and get on the list! Equestrian Clinics There will be a 4-H Ranch Horse cow work clinic on April 3, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the fairgrounds in the small arena. It is mandatory that every 4-H'er planning on participating in the cow work portion of the Ranch Horse program attend this clinic as there are quite a few changes to the program this year. Tentatively, there is a roping clinic planned for March 14, 2010 to be held at Joe and Brenda Stickel’s. This will also be mandatory for any 4-H'er who is planning on participating in the roping portion of the Ranch Horse program at fair. A definite time has not yet been set for this clinic, so please keep in contact with your 4-H leaders. As more details become available, further information on both of these clinics will be provided. Page 5 January/February 2010 Klamath Clover Co-Op Food Preparation & Mini Meal Contests Friday April 23 & Saturday April 24, 2010 Page 6 January/February 2010 Klamath Clover Co-Op Urban - Rural Exchange 2010 This year the inbound portion of the program, where the youth from Portland come to Klamath County, will be March 18-22, 2010. The outbound portion will take place April 21-25, 2010. This year the program is shaping up to be even better than before, with an amazing opportunity for the outbound program to be free for participants, excluding money for incidentals during the trip. For the Inbound part taking place here, please help the program by encouraging any farmers or ranchers you know to consider hosting a couple of youth for the week. For our youth that choose to go to Portland in April, the program will be slightly more formal than before with many exciting endeavors packed into the schedule. If you think this might interest you, please call Jed at 541-883-7131. As we all know, many 4-H activities are more expensive than they used to be, so take advantage of the times when we are able to get the registration fees reduced or covered in full! International Exchange Program Last year Klamath County was fortunate enough to host three youth from out-of-country through the 4-H International Exchange Program. They were from Norway and Japan. Each one of these three delegates from their respective countries had a wonderful time with their host families in Klamath County. For 2010 we would like to host more delegates, and for that we need to hear from 4-H families interested in hosting an exchange youth for a month this summer. This is a program that deserves time and attention; we would love to bring a person in to help us coordinate this effort. This is an unpaid volunteer position with OSU and Klamath County 4-H, however your travel expenses in relation to the program would be covered. We are seeking an inspired and energized volunteer to help us with this program. If you are interested in either hosting or coordinating, or if you know someone who might be, please contact Jed at 541-883-7131. On February 24 and 25, 4th-graders from Klamath and Lake counties visit the John Hancock Event Center to taste locally grown foods and have a hands-on learning time with animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, beef & dairy cattle, small animals, and horses. Crops such as hay, grains, potatoes, and mint will be highlighted along with the ever-popular bee station where students can sample a honey stick! Groups representing other important aspects of agriculture such as water and forestry education and weed and pest control will also be present to talk with visitors. Guests will learn interesting facts about the various aspects of agriculture represented, but also will have the chance to see heavy equipment up close. Other groups participating in this year’s Farm Expo include Oregon State University Extension Master Gardeners and the 4-H Youth Development program. This FREE annual educational event is open to the public from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on February 24 so mark your calendars and plan to attend! Learning about agriculture and its positive effect on the community helps make today's students well-informed citizens tomorrow. AITC was designed to provide curriculum, reference materials and teaching aides to K-12 teachers throughout Oregon. Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation is a science based, politically impartial organization, having a proportionate membership of agricultural and educational representatives. The Executive Board directs the activities of the Foundation and approves all material before it becomes available for use. Visit the Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom website at http:// aitc.oregonstate.edu/index.htm for further information about this wonderful program and suggest that your child’s teacher visit the website if they are unfamiliar with all the program has to offer. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action.” - Frank Tibolt Fair Theme Contest What is this year’s fair theme? Well...that might be up to you! The Klamath County Fairgrounds is asking 4-H Clubs for ideas. Put your thinking caps on and start jotting down ideas. Details including submission deadline & prizes will be sent to the club leaders in the near future. Page 12 January/February 2010 Klamath Clover Co-Op SWOJLA Does the acronym sound strange to you? This is the Southwest Oregon Junior Leaders Association. This year’s retreat will be held at a camp facility in Coos County. It is a wonderful opportunity for Klamath County youth to meet and interact with friendly 4-H’ers from west of our county line. Other counties involved with this youth retreat will be Curry, Coos, Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine Counties. This retreat is very unique because a majority of the classes or sessions are taught by senior 4-H members rather than adults. Along with that, a select few delegates from the counties are given the privilege to take an active role by participating in the planning committee for the next year’s event. Klamath County is currently looking for youth to represent us at the SWOJLA retreat March 23-26, 2010. If you are the motivated delegate we are looking for, or you are simply interested in attending with a less active role, please do not hesitate to contact Jed at 541-883-7131 for the application. Klamath and Lake Counties Rendezvous at the Ranch Here is a Senior 4-H member activity right in our own back yard! Klamath and Lake County 4-H have teamed up to bring you an all new retreat for older 4-H youth. The event will be held at Aspen Ridge Resort outside of Bly right here in Klamath County. This retreat will be fun and exciting as well as a great way to get to know some of your neighboring county 4-H counterparts. Youth will get to stay in cabins on the resort, and take part in a number of hands-on learning opportunities directed towards youth leadership. The instructors will be OSU Extension Agents, Youth Development Specialists, and Collegiate 4-H members, all bringing a wealth of knowledge and opportunity. Unlike many of the other retreats offered, the Rendezvous at the Ranch will be quite affordable at only $20. There will be a total of 18 members chosen to attend this event so return your application right away to the Klamath County Extension office. Applications will be available at the counter or on our website. Page 13 January/February 2010 Klamath Clover Co-Op 4-H Enrollment Returning members now have until February 19, 2010 to re-enroll and maintain eligibility to compete at fair; however the fee is adjusted as follows: ♦ The family cap of $60 is removed, each member must be paid for in full; ♦ Enrollments received from January 21-February 19, 2010 will be $40/member; ♦ We will no longer be able to offer enrollment scholarships to returning members this year. ♦ After February 19, 2010 re-enrollment is closed and only new members will be allowed to enroll. New members may enroll through March 26, 2010. The enrollment fee for new members is $30 per member. If new members need enrollment fee assistance, please ask them to contact the Extension office. We all know that many families in our communities are facing financial difficulty this year; please do not let this become an obstacle to enrolling. The 4-H program is full of amazing opportunities for personal growth as well as the potential for college scholarships. If you or anybody else you know would like to enroll in 4-H but needs assistance to help pay the enrollment fee at this time, please don’t hesitate to apply for a scholarship and submit your application to the Extension Office. It is confidential and nobody will be turned away from the program due to an inability to pay. The Adventures of FLAT LUCKY Have you heard of Flat Stanley? Now it is time to meet Flat Lucky! New Record Books As many of you have heard, Klamath County 4-H will be using a new record book system this year. Some things will stay the same; some will be new or updated. The permanent record will not change. The permanent record is a state-level form that is a required part of your complete record book. If you apply for state 4-H scholarships you will need this permanent record, so we will be using it as well. The main portion of your record books that will change is the project record(s). The front and back of this form where you list your project commitments for the year and review the project highlights will be incorporated into a new document called the “4-H Member’s Business Plan.” This will be a document that can be completed on your computer, or completed by hand; either method will be equally acceptable. Jed will be leading two 3-part training sessions. The first series starts February 10. The second series starts March 10. Please see the 4-H calendar for dates & times. These trainings will be exceptionally helpful for club leaders, but leaders, parents, and members are all welcome to attend. Page 15 January/February 2010 Klamath Clover Co-Op
