HOLY MOLY it is already Spring Break 2010 folks!! You all know what that
means - we are officially into spring now, and the weather is certainly reflecting
that. Keep that in mind and be sure to pay attention to your animals to make
sure they are adapting to the change in seasons as they should. If you notice
anything that is not quite right about your animals, be sure to contact your club
leader or a veterinarian for advice and do the best you can to take care of your
animals. Remember that healthy critters are the ones that will grow the most
and perform the best.
As this newsletter is reaching you after spring break, I hope that you all have enjoyed your time to refresh yourselves and recuperate for the last run until summer vacation. Most of you are well into your projects already, so as things get
busy for you this time of year be sure to do your best to cut out some time to
commit to your project whatever it may be. I, for one, can’t wait until I see your
market animals at your spring weigh ins; I will try to make it to as many of them
as I can.
One other thing that I especially want to note here is regarding the new record
books for Klamath County 4-H. I certainly realize that a change in records
means a definite learning curve... If members, parents, or leaders have questions
please contact me so that I can help you out, whether that means an e-mail, a
phone call, or scheduling me for a club meeting.

International Exchange Program
Last year Klamath County was fortunate enough to get to host three youth from
out-of-country through the 4-H International Exchange Program: one young lady
from Norway, a young lady from Japan, and also a young man from Japan. Each
one of these delegates from their respective countries had a wonderful time with
their host families in Klamath County. For 2010 we would like to see Klamath
County host three delegates this year, and for that we need 4-H families interested in taking in an exchange youth for a month over the course of the summer.
This is a program that deserves time and attention - so we would love to bring a
person on to help us coordinate this effort. We are seeking an energized and invigorated volunteer to help us with this program. This is an unpaid position
with OSU and Klamath County 4-H; however your travel expenses in relation to
the program would be covered. If you are interested in either coordinating this
program or hosting an international youth (or know someone who might be)
please contact Jed at 541-883-7131.

4-H Inter-State Exchange
Kathy Lamb, leader for Harper County 4-H Exchange Program in Anthony, KS is
interested in exchanging with a county in Oregon. Here is a little information
about the group in Kansas:
The group is located in the South Central part of Kansas, about 45 miles
SW of Wichita. The group of 4-Hers are very anxious to meet new people
and make new friends and are interested in exchanging with a county in
Oregon. The group finished their 4th Exchange and is looking for another
group to exchange with for the 2010 & 2011 year. They would like to
travel in July 2010 and host in July 2011. They have a group of about six
kids from the ages of 13 – 18, and are trying to recruit more at this time.
Some of the activities offered in Kansas on past exchanges: Dinner Theatre and "Talking Tombstones - A town full of cowboy & bank robbery
history. While there we attended the "Talking Tombstones" of historical
characters and a dinner theatre about the history of the town; Lake Afton
Observatory - Astronomy, Telescopes, etc.; Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial - Toby Keith Restaurant, Water Taxi, Shopping; Hutchinson Underground Salt Mine Museum, Kansas Cosmosphere (Astronaut & Space
Museum), & Dinner at an Amish Restaurant; Salt Plains - Dig for Salt
Crystals; Picnics, BBQ's, Chuckwagon Supper, Ice Cream Party & outside
movie under the stars.
There is a web page of the past exchanges if you would like to check
them out at http://www.harper.ksu.edu. Go to the 4-H button on the left
and then to 4-H Programs on left hand side.
If anyone in Klamath County is interested in this please let Jed know ASAP so
that a plan can be made.

Spring into Spring
There are several things to think about in preparing your animals for spring. For
all animals it is a good time to review your vaccinations and de-worming
schedule and be sure everything is up-to-date. You can view an Oregon State
University Extension publication at http://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/4h/4
-h140.pdf that is targeted toward market animals but also has some good
information pertinent to any livestock with management steps to take to keep
your animals healthy.
Here are a few items to keep in mind:

Observe animals’ behavior for general health

Grooming to help animals shed winter coats

Trim hooves or nails if necessary

Careful transition to spring pasture

Access to clean, fresh water and feed

Continued shelter for ranging temperatures and precipitation

Don’t allow manure to build up in stalls, pens, or other areas

Walk pastures and corral areas to check for safety hazards

Fly control as the weather continues to warm

Watch for external parasites such as ticks

Careful transition to increased exercise

Observe animal’s attitude when working with them - sometimes spring
weather brings out the naughty side!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns about your animals, don’t
hesitate to call Jed, Chanda Engel, your club leader or veterinarian.

2010 Western Regional 4-H Leader's Forum
A Western Regional 4-H Leader's Forum is hosted
by one of the 13 Western states each spring. For
those of you who have not been to a Western
Regional 4-H Forum you can only imagine what a
high quality educational and fellowship event it
is for the 4-H community. It will be Washington
State 's privilege to host 500 of their closest 4-H
friends from across the 13 western states,
western Canada and the Pacific territories for the
2011 Western Regional 4-H Forum. The
Washington State 4-H Advisory Board decided to host the Forum on a cruise!
Yes indeed that's right - we are Cruising to Excellence in May 2011. More details
will be available as this exciting adventure unfolds. This will be a first time ever
4-H experience! Get your passport and mark your calendar for May 2011!
Katie Feinauer, from Fort Klamath, attended this year’s Western Regional 4-H
Leader's Forum in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She says: “It was a lasting educational experience! I attended several seminars from Community Service Projects
to Team Building Skills and came back with a plethora of ideas how to aid our
program. Most enjoyable was the Community Service Projects seminar where I
learned projects about sending packages to the overseas military personnel and
how to make tie-pillows and tie-quilts for the orphanages and shelters in the
area. Getting up and moving in the Team Building seminar was quite educational, and to see and participate with a group of full-grown adults making fools
of ourselves was quite entertaining and physically challenging! The WRLF 2011
on a cruise sounds like an absolute kick and I cannot wait to get there!”

Earth Day April 22, 2010: Dispel Myths about Agriculture
You are invited and encouraged to join a team effort of educating the general
public about food and fiber production and possibly dispelling a few of the
myths surrounding agriculture. The goal is to put forth a unified positive
message about food and fiber production and good stewardship of the land.
The unified effort would take place on Earth Day (April 22, 2010). We are asking
all those involved in food and fiber production and rangeland management to
compose a short message of your choice – it does not have to be long – and
spread it widely on Earth Day, April 22, 2010. Send this message to your entire
e-mail contact list and social media friends through face book, twitter, blogs or
text messaging. The method you choose to contact your city dwelling friends,
relatives or acquaintances is not important. Just include a few points about the
industry, its importance to the economy, the industries’ value of hard work and
family, our stewardship of water, the land and air, and / or the great nutrition
and healthfulness of the product we produce – beef. The most effective message
would be for you to tell your personal story, then send it electronically to
everyone you know.
It is suggested you keep this message short and to the point. Long and windy
messages lose the reader. Make every effort to be positive and accurate. Look
in the April issue of Beef Magazine and online at http://beefmagazine.com/ for
sample letters to model your notes from as well as several internet sites
containing accurate and positive information about agriculture. Visit
http://beefmagazine.com/ to glean information for your personal letters to your
social media friends.
If we all work together, we have the ability to make this effort successful. The
key is for everyone to actively participate in getting the word out. How about it
– are you willing to join the team with this Earth Day effort?

Farm Expo 2010
Once again, February brought us the Farm Expo, an opportunity for the
community to get re-acquainted with our rich agricultural resources.
4th-graders from Klamath and Lake counties visited the John Hancock Event
Center to taste locally grown foods and have a hands-on learning time with
animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, beef & dairy cattle, small animals, and horses.
Crops and other important aspects of agriculture such as water and forestry
education and weed and pest control were also highlighted. Guests not only had
the chance to learn interesting facts about the various aspects of agriculture
represented, but also got to see heavy equipment up close.
We thank the members, leaders & parents who volunteered from the Spring Lake
Valley Community Club (John, Rebecca, Josiah, & Ben Kays; Leann, Andy, & Jeff
Meeds; Cheyenne, Hunter, & Shannon Reichert; Cherub, Carol, & Hannah
Speegle; Robbin, Kirstin, Robbie, & Thomas Volk; Johanna, Jacob, & Luke Morris;

Gooch for not only sharing their knowledge with the public, but also for helping
to spread the good word about OSU Extension and the 4-H Youth Development
Program. The Farm Expo would not be the wonderful resource that it is without
dedicated volunteers!
