Jed’s Journal
Our 4-H year is drawing to a close as the new school year emerges to
once again stretch our brains and present us with new and exhilarating
challenges. By my measure I believe we could sum up our 2009-2010
4-H year with the term “great.” Each and every one of you who
participated this year has done an excellent job and I appreciate your
time and commitment and look forward to what the future may hold
for us all. My summer was certainly a busy one, packed to the gills
with work and play alike; and I am sure this was true for many of you
as well. Going back to school may just be a form of vacation you have
been waiting for! After only a few days of school, however, it may
indeed make you wish you were still in the middle of July.
I very much enjoyed our adventures at County fair this year. So many
of you put a great deal of time and effort into your projects throughout
the year and it certainly came to fruition in a spectacular manner
displayed for the public. I am also certain that each and every one of
you learned a thing or two new by the end of fair that will help make a
difference somewhere in life for you. For everyone who qualified for
State Fair and sent static exhibits or took your animals up to compete I
applaud you! Your work was noticed and praised by many.
Though this year may be nearly over for 4-H, the new year is just a few
weeks away! Be sure to watch for enrollment deadlines, as well as
dates and times for upcoming clinics and classes that may interest you.
There will be a couple of new forms to accompany re-enrollment
paperwork for leaders and youth alike; one of which for all of our
volunteers will be a detailed position description documenting a
leader’s role. We are working on providing a wider variety of clinics
and classes for youth and leaders alike, as well as more continuing
education for our leaders throughout the year.
Again I thank you all for such a wonderful year! For the coming year
let us shoot even higher.

Enrollment Information
At the next all-leaders meeting Sept 20, 2010
a handout with all of the important member
enrollment deadlines and fees will be
available. Additionally, these handouts will
also be available for pickup at the front
counter anytime thereafter. This handout will
describe in detail the due dates for
registration and information related to participation in county-level and
state-level events such as County Fair and out-of-county 4-H events.
Vanessa Longley of Chiloquin was one of 100 students from
Oregon selected as new Ford Scholars by the Ford Family
Foundation. Vanessa will be furthering her education in
music in Southern Oregon University. Congratulations,
Vanessa! We wish you the best at college.
We are pleased to let you know that we will be offering a Standard
First Aid & Adult CPR with AED (automated external defibrillator)
course on Saturday, November 6 in the Extension Auditorium. This
class will be taught by the American Red Cross and will be structured
for those who would like to be certified for the first time. This is not
the abbreviated course for re-certification, although if you want to sit
through the entire class to be re-certified you could do that.
The cost of the class will be $50 and the class will be limited to 15
participants. The class will begin
at 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.
with a lunch break. If there is
sufficient interest we can schedule
an additional class at a later time
and/or the shorter class for
recertification.
Please call 883-7131 or e-mail
Misty to sign up.

Klamath County 4-H Enrollment and Fee Policy
The 4-H year runs from October 1 through September 30 each year. Any
deadlines that fall on a weekend, holiday, or other time when the Extension Office is
closed shall be effective the next business day.
The 4-H program welcomes all members year-round to enroll and fully
participate in all club activities; the one exception is our enrollment deadlines which
must be met in order to exhibit at the Klamath County Fair and for returning
members to be eligible for state/national activities.
In the 2009 4-H year, the state 4-H office instituted a new policy for fee
deadlines; in turn our county 4-H office has modified our deadlines in order to meet
theirs.

circumstances, be allowed to exhibit or sell at the Klamath County Fair
or state-sponsored events & activities.

New Members

or national activities; barring unforeseen circumstances (i.e. death in the

Parental Consent and 4-H Program Evaluation form signed
Code of Conduct signed
Livestock Exhibitor Agreement signed (if applicable)
Health Form signed
Applicable fees paid to the Extension Office
Family Maximum:
Please note that, if enrolled before the priority cutoff date, the fee
structure has a household maximum of $60 per family. This means that if
you have 3 children in your family, you pay for two and get the third one
free.
Enrollment Scholarships:
For both returning and new 4-H members there are funds available to
help cover the cost of the enrollment fee. Scholarships up to $15 per
member are available through the Klamath County 4-H Leaders Association
to those members with verifiable financial needs (i.e. qualify for free or
reduced lunch) subject to the discretion of the Executive Council. All
financial information will be kept confidential.
To apply contact the Klamath County Extension Office: 541-883-7131.
Refunds:
Once a member has enrolled in the 4-H program, no refunds of the
enrollment fee can be issued.
We realize that exhibiting at fair is really important to everyone, however it
does not define the 4-H program; a member that is ineligible to exhibit at the
Klamath County Fair may still participate in a number of 4-H programming
opportunities throughout the year at various levels. If your child or club is looking
for additional participation opportunities please contact the 4-H office for assistance.

2011 Outbound 4-H International Exchange Programs
Application materials for potential outbound 4-H international
exchange delegates will be available on the Oregon 4-H Web site by
early October. On the web site click on "Things to Do", then on “Travel
Abroad”. This will bring you to the first page for the 4-H World
Citizenship Project. Now go to the 4-H International Exchange
Programs section. This year we are offering outbound exchange
programs to the following countries: Australia, Costa Rica, and Japan.
Application materials for all countries are due postmarked by January 7,
2011. If you might have adults interested in being a chaperone those
application materials are also due postmarked by January 7, 2011.
To remain on the mailing list for information
and updates about the 4-H program you need
to enroll sooner rather than later so we can
avoid a gap in the flow of information!
The Klamath Falls Great Northwest PRCA Rodeo was
back for its sixteenth year. America’s finest rodeo athletes, both cowboys and cowgirls, converged at the
Klamath County Fair inside the Hancock Event Center
on August 6th & 7th to compete for
over $30,000.00 in prize money.
All 4-H and FFA participants received a $5.00 discount at the
door by wearing their 4-H & FFA wristband. Once again, a
FREE rodeo ticket was generously awarded to selected
Grand & Reserve Champions! We thank the Klamath Falls
Great Northwest PRCA Rodeo for their continued support.

It is once again time to wrap up the old year and prepare for the new
4-H year. A parent can also be a 4-H leader, this is not new. But many
parents do not take advantage of this opportunity, or don’t feel comfortable with the role, or for whatever reason they just choose not to.
However, as we make a fresh start we would just like to remind everybody that this can take some of the burden off of the main club leaders
and help keep more parents in the loop if they want to complete the
process of becoming a 4-H volunteer. This can help clubs by reducing
the number of “I didn’t know that” and “nobody told me” complaints
which will hopefully help make the entire year run more smoothly! The
cost to enroll as a leader is still only $1 ($2 for horse leaders) which
covers the accident insurance premium. How the clubs choose to
incorporate additional leaders will still be left up to the individual
dynamics of each club; so really nothing will change except that more
people will be given the chance to get more information from our
office. Please discuss this with the parents in your club and let them
know this is a way for them to be more involved.
We have scheduled a new leader’s training on Wednesday, October 13
at 5:30 p.m. at the Extension Office at 3328 Vandenberg Road. We
would like to encourage all interested parties to attend this training
and help get the new year off to a positive start! Preregistration is not required, however we would appreciate it so we can
prepare the needed materials. Please call 883-7131 or e-mail
[email protected] to sign up!
Congratulations to everyone who was selected to
exhibit at State Fair! To view the State Fair results,
