Jed’s Journal Well here we are at spring once again, at least according to the calendar! Hopefully all of you are getting used to the time change and your critters are adjusted to it by now as well. This is a great time of year; many of you are well into your project work this year and some are really just beginning to jump off the starting line. It is also time for spring sports so set yourselves up for success by keeping your projects in mind as you plan your schedules. For those of you doing market projects I would like to briefly mention a couple of things that are imperative in your selection of a successful market project. More specifically, there are three things that due to genetics you cannot change with your animal; they are the balance, structure, and amount of muscle. Balance: Balance is a very important trait and one you cannot change. You want your animal to look well-proportioned throughout its body shape. Does the animal look wide enough, is it the right length, are the shoulders and hips nearly level with each other? Be sure to look for these things before you go spend your hard-earned money on a project animal. If an animal you are looking at seems like it has some parts but not others and kind of looks to you like it is scrapped together don’t buy that one; you will not be able to correct the balance of the animal. Structure: Here is a genetic trait the animal will get from its parents. Is the animal well-boned, or is it too light of a skeleton? Are the legs straight, do they walk comfortably; are they “cow hocked” or “pigeon toed”? These particular traits again you cannot correct as they are genetically programmed to look one way or another. If possible look at the parents, they will display similar characteristics. (Continued on page 3) Page 2 March/April 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Muscle: Your market project will have a certain muscle composition the day you purchase the animal and this composition will not change over the life of the animal. Yes, the muscles will grow and get larger but the shape and proportion of the animal that they are will remain constant from the time you take them home until you sell that animal. This is a genetic trait of your young animal - look at the parents if possible and see how they look then imagine them the size of your young one. Then remember that your animal will look the same as it does the day of purchase just multiplied in size by the time you finish the animal out. The basic thought when you go to purchase your project animal is take a good look and be willing to change your mind about an animal. The way the baby critter looks is how it will look in the end, it will simply be larger. Yes, you will have fat cover and things of that sort but the basic shape of the animal will not change, the way they look is the way they look and they will grow that way. Good luck on your selections as you move forward. If you have questions feel free to ask; we are here to help! JED Rotary Livestock Loan For those of you who are looking at a sheep or swine project for the upcoming year, please remember the Rotary 4-H/FFA Loan Program is available to help if funds are an obstacle to your participation. The Youth Market Livestock Loan was established to promote youth livestock projects that may otherwise be financially restrictive. The purpose is to provide an interest-free loan to be used towards purchasing a market quality animal to raise as a project. Maximum Loan Amounts: Deadlines: Sheep = $200 June 1st Swine = $250 June 1st Please contact us if you would like an application for this program. Page 3 March/April 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Congratulations! Recently, one of our outstanding 4-H volunteers was recognized as the Airman of the Year for the 173rd Operations Group. Shawn Blodgett was chosen because he exemplifies the Air Force core values: Integrity First, Service Above Self and Excellence In All We Do. Service Above Self refers to sacrificing for your country and going above and beyond to serve the Air Force; but it also recognizes serving your community, so his volunteerism as a member of the Klamath Community College Board of Education and his years of service as a 4-H Leader were factors as well when he was chosen. Last summer, Shawn was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for his outstanding contributions during the Unit Compliance Inspection. This is a HUGE inspection only done every 4 years. Team Kingsley earned an overall "excellent," however Shawn's flight earned an "outstanding" rating which is the highest rating that can be earned. Shawn was singled out in the inspection team’s report as being an integral part of why they earned such a rating. Typically it may take several years for an individual to be presented with this medal so when Shawn was awarded the medal after only 8 months of becoming an Airman, it was a major achievement! Shawn’s wife, Amanda, is also a long-time 4-H volunteer. Amanda was recognized as one of the junior enlisted members who make up 81% of the population of Team Kingsley. The Wing Commander and Command Chief noted that the wing couldn't be as successful as it is without the junior enlisted members. Shawn started 4-H in the 5th grade; the lessons he took from his years in 4-H have served him well both as a business owner and now as one of the finest Airman at Kingsley Field. Hopefully his story can inspire anyone reading this to always strive to be your best! Congratulations to both Shawn and Amanda Blodgett. They are not only a great example of volunteering in the community, but also a great example of the valuable experience that can be gleaned from 4-H! Page 4 March/April 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Upcoming Educational Opportunities March 31, 2011....... 5:30 p.m. ....... Extension Office Auditorium; Basic Livestock vaccinations and deworming. All of these opportunities are open to youth and adults (and these qualify as continuing education for leaders as well!) We hope to see some of you there. Welcome to 4-H! If you have not already received a “Welcome to 4-H” book from your 4-H Club Leader, you should be receiving one soon. These books were created not only to be a resource to those who are new to 4-H, but also hopefully to provide an even greater level of knowledge to long-time 4-H families. Ambassadors It’s time to start thinking about applying to be a 2011-12 Oregon 4-H State Ambassador. The Oregon 4-H State Ambassador team is made up of 12-18 fantastic 4-H members and serves as the public relations arm of the 4-H program. The role of the State Ambassadors varies from year to year, but typically they do things like moderate the Oregon 4-H facebook page, serve as hosts at State Fair, and emcee Summer Conference and other events. Interested members should be in the 10th or 11th grade for the 2010-11 school year. They need to attend a training and interview at Summer Conference as well as submit an application. Applications are due June 1, 2011 to the State 4-H office and can be found at http:// oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/ambassador-program If you have any questions. Please contact Sara Miller at [email protected]. Page 5 March/April 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op For more information, visit http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/4h-summer-conference All too soon the school year will be over and summer will be upon us. This cancellation is for the time being only to be in effect for 2011; for 2012 these activities should be offered again. If you have questions or concerns related to this issue please contact Jed Smith 541-883-7131, or the State 4-H Office at 541-737-4444. The note below is from Roger Rennekamp, State 4-H Program Leader: I want to take this opportunity to communicate the decision that has been made regarding 4-H activities and events scheduled to be held this summer. The state 4-H staff met and reached consensus on a plan for moving forward in light of budget reductions and vacancies. I am happy to announce that 4-H Summer Conference will be held as planned in 2011. Since many have indicated that 4-H Summer Conference was the most important state 4-H event of the year, we will actively be looking for ways to grow and improve the conference in future years. The 4-H Fashion Revue Fashion revue will be held but is limited to one session (Friday Aug 26 - Saturday Aug 27). We will, be canceling the foods contests and all presentations that were slated to be held at the 2011 State Fair. Last year, 44 youth participated in the food contests and 83 youth made presentations at the State Fair. This decision affects only the 2011 program year. Being considered for 2012 and beyond are modifying the foods contests to more closely align with learning outcomes and looking for alternate venues for conducting the presentations. Decisions regarding 2012 activities and events will be made at a later date. Thanks in advance for your support of these decisions. Page 8 March/April 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Shooting Sports Trainings The Shooting Sports program, along with all of the Outdoor Education and Recreation 4-H programs in the state of Oregon, are growing like wildfire. This year Oregon 4-H has added ATV and Sport Fishing programs to the list of activities. Klamath County at this time does not have anyone registered as a leader in either of those programs and would love to have someone go that direction. If you are interested check in at the office for more information. In direct relation to the Shooting Sports project with Oregon 4-H, Klamath County is also on a wonderful trajectory. Klamath has leaders who provide club activities for Archery, Pistol, Rifle, and Muzzleloading.
