Jed’s Journal
Well crew it is spring time and rapidly heading towards summer time
and fair time again. Wait just one minute, did I say “spring?” Excuse
me...late, late winter or…
At any rate, very soon school will be out and everyone will be diligently
working and playing in some manner; whether it be work for
compensation or chores around home and/or 4-H and FFA project
work. Remember to try to keep yourself scheduled so that you can
devote the important much-needed time to your respective projects. If
you have livestock (this is for horses as well) be mindful of the time of
year and watch the roughage intake and green pasture. For those
working on family and home science-type projects, once school is out
perhaps that will allow you the perfect opportunity to master your
culinary or creative task.
Just this past week I was privileged to attend the Western Regional 4-H
Leaders Forum (WRLF) hosted by Washington State University 4-H
aboard the cruise ship ms Westerdam. I have to say to all of the 4-H
members and leaders in the county: just look where 4-H might one day
land you. It was a wonderful chance to share thoughts and ideas of a
4-H nature with volunteers and faculty from the western states as well
as a few from the eastern part of our country. Combine that with the
dynamic cross section of people from other nations around the globe
on the ship as well and the great Alaskans and Canadians we met along
the way while on shore and it was simply a magnificent way to spend a
week. I suppose the message that I would hope you might glean from
sharing my trip with you is that we all open our minds to what we
might gain by interacting outside our inner circle in the 4-H world.
Reach up and reach out, it is all part of making the best better.
Certainly I was not alone as an Oregonian on the ship; all told there
were about 60 volunteers and faculty from across our fine state plus
our spouses and children for those brought family members. Lake
County, our neighbor to the east, was represented by their agent Jamie
Davis. Jamie and I teamed up with the Lincoln County agent and taught
a couple of classes while on board and certainly we learned as much

from the volunteers and faculty in the audience as they may have
learned from us.
For those that might be interested in looking into an upcoming WRLF,
you will want to start planning. Here is a look at where the next two
years will be:
WRLF 2012 - Cheyenne, Wyoming
WRLF 2013 - Honolulu, Hawaii
Save up those pennies and consider attending one of these; I am quite
certain you will not be disappointed. Enjoy your spring and I will see
you around the county!!

No family makes too much for
Healthy Kids. Even middle-income
families may qualify for coverage
on a sliding scale. For example, a
family of four can earn as much as
$67,200 per year and may qualify
for the low-cost option.
Healthy Kids covers all the health care kids need, including:
 Doctor visits and preventative care
 Medical, dental and vision care
 Prescriptions and durable medical equipment
 Mental health and chemical dependency services
Once enrolled, coverage lasts for at least one full year and can be
renewed so long as the child is still eligible. No child will be put on a
waiting list or turned away due to a pre-existing condition.
To be eligible, a child must be uninsured, under the age of 19, live in
Oregon, and be a legal resident. Family income will determine whether
the child qualifies for the no-cost, low-cost or full-cost option.

Collegiate 4-H
The OSU Collegiate 4-H Chapter began in 1929 and has a long and
proud history at Oregon State University. In 2000 the club earned the
national club of the year award in the new club division.
The club is a community service-based and social club housed out of
the 4-H Youth Development Department of the College of Education.
Collegiate 4-H provides them a unique way to stay involved with the
4-H program through our motto, “sharing to continue, continuing to
share.”
Experience in Collegiate 4-H is often cited as a significant contributor
to the success of members after college. Many Collegiate 4-H alumni
say that what they learned in 4-H helped them get their first job or into
the graduate or vet school of their choice.

questions before fair.
Some materials will be handed out to help study up before fair.
If you’d like to attend, you can choose to bring your animal to the
clinic or just come and watch. Please only bring the animal you plan on
using at fair for showmanship to practice with if you choose to bring

Swine Jeopardy
Wednesday, July 13th, 2011
5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
OSU Extension Auditorium
Jordin Scholer is hosting a swine jeopardy game show for her Henley
High School senior project. The goal of this project is to educate 4-H
youth about the swine industry and provide education that can be
applied to their current animal project. This jeopardy event should
further prepare members for the showmanship competition questions a
judge may ask at the Klamath County Fair. The project is also intended
to give kids tips about the proper care and responsibility needed to
correctly provide for an animal that will eventually be eaten by the
consumer. The game of Jeopardy will bring a fun aspect to the learning
that comes along with it and prizes of feed and show supplies will be
given to first and second place in each age division. This project will
benefit members in grades 4 - 12.
This event is free to all 4-H and FFA members enrolled in the swine
project. Information Sources to study before the event are:
 PQA (Pork Quality Assurance Manual)
 Meat Advancement booklet (part of 4-H record book)
 4-H Swine Project Publication PNW 330 (A Pacific Northwest
Extension Publication by OSU, WSU and Univ of Idaho); July 2002
 4-H Circular 134R Swine Resource Handbook (for Marketing and
Breeding Projects) © OH State University, 2001
Snacks will be provided at the competition and the most important rule
is to HAVE FUN!
Entries are due by June 20, 2011. For
complete rules, if you have questions, or to
enter a team, please contact Jordin Scholer
at 541-205-2072 or [email protected].

We have good news regarding the State Fair
2011 Foods and Presentations Contests!
Through the selfless dedication of several county 4-H faculty, the 4-H
foods contests and presentations at the Oregon State Fair for 2011
have been reinstated. A group of 4-H
volunteers and 4-H staff members from several
counties will coordinate the contests this year,
since the state 4-H office does not have enough
resources. Their goal is to keep the contest
process running as close to normal as possible,
but there will be a few modifications. Please
stay tuned to updates from our office as we
receive further details.

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1)
According to a press release from the Oregon Department
of Agriculture, a recent outbreak of the neurological form
of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) traced to a horse show in
Utah has also been reported in Oregon. EHV-1 has been
confirmed in neighboring western states as well.
Dr. Don Hansen, state veterinarian, has alerted a statewide network of
veterinarians about the disease, asking them to work with their equine
clients to develop plans that can help prevent EHV-1 in their horses and
to report any potential cases. EHV-1 is not transmissible to people, but
it is a serious disease of horses that can cause respiratory, neurologic
disease and death. The most common way for EHV-1 to spread is
by direct horse-to-horse contact. The virus can also spread through the
air, contaminated equipment, clothing, and hands.
Symptoms include fever, decreased coordination, nasal discharge, urine
dribbling, loss of tail tone, hind limb weakness, leaning against a wall
or fence to maintain balance, lethargy, and the inability to rise. While
there is no cure, the symptoms of the disease may be treatable.
“Strict biosecurity measures and hygiene practices are likely to be more
effective than widespread vaccination in reducing the risk of acquiring
infection because available EHV-1 vaccines do not seem to protect
against this virus strain,” says Hansen. “With many horses and their
owners traveling to shows and competitions in the days and weeks to
come, it is important to take potential risks into consideration and use
caution.”
Biosecurity tips include:
 Do not haul a horse that has any signs of illness (including nasal
discharge, elevated temperature, etc.)
 Every horse should have its own water bucket, feed tub, grooming
tools, blankets, etc.
 Pour water into buckets without sticking the hose into the bucket let the water fall into the bucket
 Do not use fans in barns
 Be smart and use common sense ALL THE TIME!
Contact your veterinarian if you have any questions about this outbreak.

Pre-Fair Record Book Check
This year, as with last year, record books will be a requirement for
participation in county fair. Keeping accurate records of your 4-H
project work is an essential element in the process of experiential
learning in all areas of 4-H programming. The skills you learn through
record keeping will benefit you greatly throughout life. For your
convenience, record books may be pre-checked this year at the
Extension Office from July 18-29. For those members in the dog, horse,
or home and family sciences projects I would suggest having your
books checked the first week of the time frame. If you choose not to
have your records pre-checked please have them with you when you
arrive at the fair office for dog fair, cat fair, horse fair, or small animals;
the check-in table for home and family sciences; and the scale for
livestock projects during your respective fair times.
The following elements will be required:
Identification page
Overview, goals, & purpose (complete)
Operating Budget (complete)
Opening Inventory (complete)
Animal Identification page (horse & dog only)
Feed & Growth up to date through July 15
(all animal science projects)
 Health & Maintenance Record up to date through July 15
