Jed’s Journal Well crew, here we are once again at the brink of Fair Season! Just like all the other seasons except better, right? I hope you are all as excited for the Klamath County Fair as I am. I have had a chance to see or hear of many of your projects throughout the winter and spring and they certainly look and sound amazing. I know for those of you with livestock this odd weather pattern we have experienced this year brought with it a certain set of challenges but you have all met it head on and produced great animals just the same. While we are all at fair and around this summer let us all keep in mind to “make the best better” and lend a hand to one another and really show the community what 4-H is about. Let us also remember that this generosity and belonging feeling needs be extended from our green and white to the blue and gold of FFA as well. We are all there to show our wares and have an enjoyable fair so let us work together for the best possible result. In the recent weeks I have had the pleasure of attending Summer Conference 2011 as well as being the host for Swine Jeopardy. These events help me to remember why 4-H is such a great program and why we are all here; members, leaders, parents, staff alike. What a wonderful group of young people Oregon 4-H, and Klamath County has to represent us all. The Swine Jeopardy event was an absolute blast! Our own Jordin Scholer headed up the event for her senior project and a magnificent job she did I must say. The amount of work that was put into the project really shined through with the smoothness of operations and the sheer enjoyment of all the participants and spectators alike. Perhaps best of all there was a great deal of learning that took place while we were all having fun, now that right there gang is what 4-H is all about! 4-H’ers if you get a chance during fair to visit with Ms. Scholer be sure and ask her about Swine Jeopardy, what all went into it and what the purpose was and most of all thank her for bringing that to Klamath County for us all. There is a type of 4-H’er that you may hear me refer to from time to time and that is a 4-H’er of Character, (Continued on page 3) Page 2 July/August 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op and ladies and gentleman we have one in Ms. Jordin Scholer! I look forward to seeing you all at fair; I will be looking for all of your smiling faces. If you have questions, comments, concerns, or just want to chat during our fair this year I am all ears for everyone! When we arrived at the vet school we were greeted by two students from the school. They led us throughout the school showing us where surgeries, rehabilitation, research, and studying takes place. The girl that led my group was really smart and she was able to answer lots of questions. One of our members wants to go to OSU to be a vet, so she was able to get lots of information. While on our tour we were able to see a dog being operated on, and a baby llama that was only a week old, it had a hernia. When the tour was about over we were able to meet Dr. Helen Diggs, she is the attending veterinarian for Oregon State University, and director of the University’s Laboratory Animal Resources Center. She was really nice and she personally took us around to more areas of the vet school. We were able to go out to where they keep the horses, and also go into the building where the horse treadmill is. It was really big and interesting, too! After we left the vet school, we went to the OSU Horse Center. We walked around and toured their facilities, and also learned that students at OSU can take classes there. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic about the program and said that anyone can take classes there whether they have experience on a horse or not. OSU has an equestrian team that travels to compete. The most interesting thing that I learned was that the team does not take their own horse to the competitions; they are assigned a horse to ride. As a first year member of Bonanza Manes and Reins, this was definitely an experience that I will always remember. I learned a lot and so did the other 4-H members. Page 4 July/August 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op 2011 Klamath County Fair Theme Pre-Fair Record Book Check This year, as with last year, record books will be a requirement for participation in county fair. Keeping accurate records of your 4-H project work is an essential element in the process of experiential learning in all areas of 4-H programming. The skills you learn through record keeping will benefit you greatly throughout life. For your convenience, record books may be pre-checked this year at the Extension Office from July 18-29. For those members in the dog, horse, or home and family sciences projects I would suggest having your books checked the first week of the time frame. If you choose not to have your records pre-checked please have them with you when you arrive at the fair office for dog fair, cat fair, horse fair, or small animals; the check-in table for home and family sciences; and the scale for livestock projects during your respective fair times. The following elements will be required: Identification page Overview, goals, & purpose (complete) Operating Budget (complete) Opening Inventory (complete) Animal Identification page (horse & dog only) Feed & Growth up to date through July 15 (all animal science projects) Health & Maintenance Record up to date through July 15 (all animal science projects) Non-Animal Activities Record up to date through July 15 (all non-animal projects) Last year’s county record books as an appendix (all members/all projects, except first-year members) Page 5 July/August 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Fair Follow Up Meeting The next All Leaders meeting will be the 19th of September, 2011. This will be an important meeting to come to so that your comments and suggestions on Klamath County Fair 2011 can be heard and move forward for 2012. At this meeting we will also discuss where Klamath County 4-H is headed for 2011-2012 4-H year. Again that is 7:00pm, Sept 19, 2011. National 4-H Science Experiment The 2011 National 4-H Science Experiment is Wired for Wind, an indepth look at renewable energy technologies in the form of windpower. This three-tiered experiment will help 4-H young people to enhance their science, engineering, technology and applied math skills by allowing them to: Design, build and test two different wind turbine models, Experiment with variables by examining three different blade pitch angles to determine the effect of pitch on rotor speed, Relate their scientific experiences back to their own lives by determining how their communities can harness the power of wind and create a more sustainable and clean energy system, and Determine the best location for a potential wind farm in their state or local area by calculating wind power and studying wind data and maps. This year, 4-H National Youth Science Day will take place on October 5, 2011. Participation in 4-H National Youth Science Day is meant to help spark an early passion for science, engineering and math and to encourage young people to consider these paths of study and future careers. To learn more about 4-H National Youth Science Day, how you can participate locally, or to download program materials, go to www.4-H.org/NYSD. Page 6 July/August 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op NPGA National Convention On June 23, six members of the Forty Shorties 4-H Pygmy Goat Club loaded their pygmy goats and traveled ten long hours to Monroe, Washington to attend the National Pygmy Goat Association’s (NPGA) National Convention. Members competed in the national youth show on July 24 and an open show on June 25. They met many new friends and represented the 4-H program in a fun and positive manner. Mallory Howresko showed the youth national Best Wether and Jordan Bailey showed the youth national Champion Junior Doe and Grand Champion Doe plus all members placed in their showmanship classes. We will need volunteers to bring refreshments (such as cookies) and lots of people who can answer questions about the program and the project areas available. Please mark this date on your calendar now before your schedule gets too busy! If your schedule just won’t allow you to be there but you still want to participate, alternate ideas include making a display about your project area or club, helping distribute advertising flyers to schools, or making refreshments. And, of course, what we would really love is to see your smiling faces making the public feel welcome!! Page 10 July/August 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Where's that? That's the Capital Building in Washington DC! Who's that? That's Congressman Greg Walden jumping off the Capitol steps flanked by local 4-Hers (l to r: Brittany Eskildson, Abby Edmonds, Kelsey Skinner, Megan Hurtado, and Carson Dentinger) on their 4-H "Citizenship Washington Focus" trip to the nation's capitol in June. How can I do that? Call the Klamath Extension Office at 541-883-7131. Klamath County 4-H Enrollment Here’s a heads-up that the enrollment deadlines will all take place before the end of December 2011. There are a couple of reasons for doing this, perhaps most important being that all members and leaders working under the 4-H umbrella should be officially enrolled in the program prior to attending club meetings and otherwise participating in 4-H activities and this doesn’t always happen when the deadline is more than three months into the 4-H year. We are also going to ask the leaders to make sure their enrollment is complete earlier in the 4-H year so that club paperwork isn’t held up for any reason. Deadline dates will be announced in late August or September.
