Jed’s Journal First and foremost, welcome back to school for the year! It does seem that summer passed us by rather rapidly this year; at least from my perspective it sure did. Congratulations to each and every one of you on a job well done over the course of the last year; in particular those who exhibited at County Fair this year did a great job worth praise! Those that went on to State Fair or sent exhibits to go on display also did very well; you were a great representation of Klamath County! Let us not forget our Klamath County FFA chapters; they also did extremely well this year at both the county and state levels, perhaps most notably in the Ag Mechanics area. 4-H’ers can also exhibit in the Ag Mechanics project areas - anything from welding/fabrication to restoring tractors, so that is something to consider as you plan your 4-H year. With September coming to a close, so does our 2010-20114-H year; however, it is not a sad occasion as the new 4-H year starts the following day! October 1 will mark the first day of the 2011-2012 4-H year. Start thinking about re-enrolling for the new year as soon as possible to get going on your projects and please invite your friends to join you in meetings to see if 4-H might just be something they are interested in. The deadlines are on the next page: be sure to mark those dates on your calendars now. We are very much encouraging leaders to enroll before the end of October so that we have a good idea of which clubs have room for new members and where we need to have growth so please help us by returning your enrollment packet as soon as possible. Throughout the year be on the alert for 4-H classes offered at the Extension office and around the county. Last year we offered a number of short classes to help with project-related work, building leadership skills, etc. and these will be offered again this coming year as well. Also keep on your radar the leadership retreats and camps that are offered around the state...those dates and registration materials will be shared with you as they become available. Klamath County had a marked increase in presence at a number of these events this past year (Continued on page 3) Page 2 September/October 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op and we would love to see a continued increase in participation in statewide activities. Just this last week I was able to see nearly 700 6th graders from around the county at the Forestry Tour; many were 4-H members and many were friends of 4-H’ers. This year the Forestry Tour marked its 48th year due to the unwavering efforts of a magnificent group of area volunteers who provide the expertise for this program and have kept this program alive and healthy this entire time. We are heading for year 50 in full strength! Everyone enjoy these first couple of months of fall and good luck with sports, hunting, 4-H, FFA, or whatever your life may entail this fall! JED “The real meaning of travel, like that of a conversation by the fireside, is the discovery of oneself through contact with other people, and its condition is self-commitment in the dialogue.” -Paul Tournier Klamath County 4-H Enrollment Here’s the scoop on the enrollment deadlines for this year! Friday, October 28: Returning Leader enrollments due Friday, December 2: Returning Member enrollment deadline Friday, January 6: New Member enrollment deadline The enrollment fee is remaining at $30/member with a $60/household maximum. Re-enrollment packets have been made available to the club leaders. Members should be hearing from their leaders soon to confirm enrollment for the upcoming year. As a courtesy to your clubs, please don’t wait until the last day to enroll so that the leaders know if they have room to accept new members or not. We hope there are not issues with late enrollments this year as each person has more than two months notice of the deadlines! Page 3 September/October 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op We still need volunteers (see the next page for suggestions) to help with the 4-H Open House. It takes a lot of people each doing just a little bit to pull an event like this together. We have a special volunteer opportunity for the younger 4-H members and/or siblings that will be really fun and can be done earlier in the day or perhaps the day before if the weather is cooperative so call us if you have a little helper! Please let us know if you plan to help or want to but don’t know where you fit in, or if you have any questions. Let’s work together to share all that 4-H offers with those who don’t yet know! Celebrate National 4-H Week October 2 - 8, 2011 What is the 4-H Revolution of Responsibility? It’s a movement for positive change in every community in America. 4-H youth are a living breathing, culture-changing revolution for doing the right thing, breaking through obstacles and pushing our country forward by making a measurable difference right where they live. That takes uncommon commitment. The revolution of responsibility comes to life everyday through real 4-H'ers who are making a real impact in their communities. There are some great stories of the wonderful things 4-H members around the country have done and you can read about them at http:// www.4-h.org/about/revolution/stories-of-responsibility/ and even share your own story there! Page 4 September/October 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Tuesday, October 4, 2011 Extension Auditorium 3328 Vandenberg Road We want to encourage each project area to plan to send an adult volunteer and a youth member representative to help us greet the public and share with them all that 4-H has to offer. We will need volunteers to bring refreshments (such as cookies) and lots of people who can answer questions about the program and the project areas available. Please mark this date on your calendar now before your schedule gets too busy! If your schedule just won’t allow you to be there but you still want to participate, alternate ideas include making a display about your project area or club, helping distribute advertising flyers to schools, or making refreshments. And, of course, what we would really love is to see your smiling faces making the public feel welcome!! Page 13 September/October 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op Red Cross Trainings Katie Feinauer is in the process of making arrangements for some Red Cross classes to be offered here in Klamath County. Classes to be offered include: When I am in Charge (geared for 9-11 year olds) Basic Aid (geared for 10-15 year olds) Babysitting (geared for 11-17 year olds) Once there are enough people, a date and time will be arranged with the Red Cross. If you are interested in these classes, please contact Katie at 541-783-2636. New Videos on Educational Displays & Oregon 4-H Center Thanks to an innovative grant from the Oregon 4-H Foundation, the state 4-H office was able to develop some educational videos for 4-H youth and volunteers. The newest series of videos is on Educational Displays and is listed on that project area page on the state 4-H website. A new video on the Oregon 4-H Center is also available, and might be of interest to potential youth campers and their parents. Please share these with your clubs. The state office also welcomes feedback on these videos. P.S. - check out the Educational Display videos! They are good! This year we will be having a new club geared toward learning about the opportunities available through 4-H for international exchange programs. Katie Feinauer will be leading this club and brings a great deal of enthusiasm with her. If you are interested in this motivating club, visit http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/4h-world-citizenshipproject-overview or call Katie at 541-783-2636. Page 14 September/October 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op State Committee Openings Available The State 4-H committee interest form is available on the state 4-H website at http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/staff-advisory-councils-and -committees. Interest forms can be submitted at anytime, although there are priority deadlines listed. The information from these forms is used to populate a database that they reference when filling vacant positions. Your willingness to advise and support 4-H curriculum and programs is appreciated and is a great way to get to know the program from a different perspective! There are many committees you may serve on, and each is different in terms of number on the committee, how often they meet, and how long the term of service is. Selection of committee members is based on many factors, including ensuring diverse perspectives. Further details about the committees available and the approximate schedules are available at the link above. Message for parents in the new 4-H year Parents can also be 4-H leaders, this is not new; but many parents do not take advantage of this opportunity, or don’t feel comfortable with the role, or for whatever reason they just choose not to. However, as we make a fresh start we would just like to remind everybody that this can take some of the burden off of the main club leaders and help keep more parents in the loop if they want to complete the process of becoming a 4-H volunteer. The cost to enroll as a leader is still only $1 ($2 for horse leaders) which covers the accident insurance premium. More people will be given the chance to get more information from our office. Additionally, enrolled 4-H leaders have voting privileges in the 4-H Leaders Association meetings which is a direct link to helping steer the decisions that are made and the direction of the local programming. It’s simple to get the process started so please contact us if you are interested in becoming one of our valued volunteers! Page 15 September/October 2011 Klamath Clover Co-Op
