Jed’s Journal
Well, crew - it sure looks like winter came...at least this week it has!
For so long it seemed the weather would never change into winter as
we seemed to have a very extended fall, but of course that all changes
rather rapidly now and then a storm blows in like a lion! All of you
with livestock projects should keep this in mind: with such a rapid
transition be sure and pay close attention to their health.
Just this past week I was privileged once again to chaperone a
townhouse full of 11th and 12th grade young men from around the state
at the High Desert Leadership Retreat. What a great event this year
with such an outstanding group of 4-Her’s! For all of you who will be
entering the 6th grade or higher next year, really do be thinking about
this event for the future. It is a lot of fun and you will learn a lot! For
high school students, be on the lookout for programs and events like
this as they are great résumé builders in terms of scholarship
applications in your near future. The scholarship committees love to
see leadership and these types of events are designed to build your
leadership abilities. The hope always is that you attend an event like
HDLR and bring what you learn back and present it to your club, or to a
larger cross section of youth in our county. It really is a blast and who
knows...you may even get to see these guys at a leadership event:

In the not-so-distant future (May 11-12) will be the Klamath & Lake
Rendezvous at the Ranch 2012 held by Jamie Davis (Lake County 4-H)
and I at Aspen Ridge Resort . This event was new in 2010 and the 18
youth that participated had a great time. The registration fee will be
very reasonable and it is a great way to get introduced to leadership
opportunities within the 4-H program. Look for more information
regarding this event coming soon on the website and Facebook!
Please do check us out on Facebook, (http://www.facebook.com/
Klamath.County.4H) there are 4-H program updates posted there
regularly. Take care and stay warm, I look forward to seeing you
around the county!

We welcome everyone who is new to 4-H this year!
Here is a little bit about why we are all here...
4-H Mission
4-H empowers youth to reach their
full potential, working and learning
in partnership with caring adults.
Who We Are
4-H prepares young people to step up to the challenges in their
community and the world. Using research-based programming around
positive youth development, 4-H youth get the hands-on real world
experience they need to become leaders.
Through America’s 109 land-grant universities and its Cooperative
Extension System, 4-H reaches every corner of our nation—from urban
neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farming communities.
With a network of more than 6 million youth, 540,000 volunteers,
3,500 professionals, and more than 60 million alumni, 4-H helps shape
youth to move our country and the world forward in ways that no other
youth organization can.
Research
Research shows that 4-H plays a special and vital role in the lives of
young people. 4-H youth achieve higher marks in school, are more
likely to attend college and contribute to their communities at higher
rates than their peers. These findings are part of a landmark study from
the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development (PYD).
4-H Vision
A world in which youth and adults learn, grow and work together as
catalysts for positive change.

Summer Conference 2012
It may seem early to be thinking about an event in June, however, in
reality it is not. Have you heard stories about the great fun and
knowledge to be found at OSU 4-H Summer Conference? Several youth
the past few years have gone to campus and experienced this firsthand. For those that have gone in the past we encourage you to go
again this year and to invite a friend! If a group of 4-H’ers decide they
would like to go, this early on you would have the ability to conduct a
fundraiser or two so you would have the registration fee paid for.
There will also be opportunity for scholarships to attend this wonderful
annual event. So, if you are interested, it is not too early to let Jed or
Misty know you would like to go this year.
Along with Summer Conference, of course comes the T-Shirt design
contest...
T-shirt Design Contest
It’s time again for our annual OSU Summer Conference T-shirt design

you plan to fail." There are many online programs that help persons of
all ages attend college at two or four year institutions. Visit

important resources so you can make your dream of attending college

National 4-H Congress Applications due
National 4-H Congress is held each Thanksgiving weekend in Atlanta,
Georgia. Over 1,300 4-H members from all 50 states and Puerto Rico
attend Congress. At Congress, delegates hear inspirational speakers,
participate in cultural workshops, a large-scale community service
project, and other fun activities. Member applications for National 4-H
Congress are due to our office by February 17, 2012. Applications are
located at http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/the-state-4h-resume. In
mid-March the State Recognition committee will select the Congress
finalists who will be interviewed during 4-H Summer Conference in late
June.
Visit http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/national-4h-congress for more
information including the selection criteria. Wouldn’t it be great if a
representative attended from Klamath County?
National 4-H Congress
Fundraising Efforts Are Underway!
Many Congress delegates describe attending this event as the highlight
of their 4-H career. Unfortunately, over the past few years, the number
of delegates Oregon has been able to send to National 4-H Congress
has decreased dramatically. In 2004 we sent a group of 27 youth; in
2011 we could afford to send only 14.
The Oregon 4-H program views National 4-H Congress as an important
opportunity for 4-H members, and is committed to providing this
experience to as many 4-H members who can benefit from it as
possible. Because the trips to Congress are dependent on donations, a
selection process is held each year. The State 4-H Recognition
Committee selects Congress delegates based on the member's overall
achievement in 4-H projects, leadership, communication, citizenship,
community service and readiness to benefit from Congress.
Oregon is hoping to send a delegation of at least 20 youth in 2012; so
the fundraising goal is $32,000. If you or someone you know is able to
donate, please help keep alive the tradition of giving our outstanding
Oregon youth this wonderful opportunity in 2012.

Urban-Rural Exchange 2012
Very soon the kick off dates for the Urban Rural 4-H Exchange will be
here! This inbound and outbound experience is a great adventure for
7th and 8th grade students in Klamath County. Those families that
participated as hosts last year to urban youth through this program,
please consider going to Portland this year to see what life is like for
those youth. If you would be interested in hosting again this year,
please get in touch with Jed soon as well. Our goal for hosting this
year will be 10 youth and 2 adult chaperones so what that translates to
is needing 6 or 7 hosting families. It really is a great experience, and to
be able to share the rural way of life with youth who may not otherwise
ever be exposed to it is a great thing.
This is an educational experience and seeing that it takes place partially
during the school week if you are interested Jed needs to know soon in
order to make arrangements with your school.
Outbound (Klamath Youth to Portland): March 14-18, 2012
Inbound (Portland Youth to Klamath): April 12-17, 2012
For those who are unfamiliar
with the Urban-Rural Exchange,
here’s a little background. In
2005, just as it seemed Oregon’s
urban-rural divide had grown
into an unbridgeable chasm, a
handful of ranchers from rural
Grant county did the
unexpected. They invited kids
from Portland's Sunnyside
Environmental School to live and
work along side them and see their side of life. The Urban-Rural
exchange has continued every year since. Follow a group of students
as they share in both the joy and the misery that comes with real rural
life on the original OPB Oregon Field Guide broadcast at
http://www.opb.org/programs/ofg/segments/view/1710. The video runs
about 25 minutes without commercials and offers neat insight of the
program from the point of view of many different participants.

how decisions are made, and also to gain valuable
leadership experience that looks awesome on résumés and
applications! Welcome to the Council, Jake & Kristin!
