Jed’s Journal
Well everyone, spring has finally sprung and we are all on the run! By
the time you all receive this newsletter the Swine Weigh-Ins will have
concluded for spring and we will be left with only Lambs and Goats yet
to weigh on the 5th of June. For all of you who are involved with a
livestock project, especially a market animal, be sure that you are
putting the feed in front of your animal pals now while we have cooler
weather. Getting those pounds on them early makes the final few
weeks before fair time a lot less stressful for you and your livestock.
Congratulations to all of our Food Prep and Mini Meal participants. You
all did an excellent job this year and such great competitors you are.
The second ever Klamath & Lake Rendezvous at the Ranch was a
success once again thanks to Klamath and Lake County 4-H members
that attended. We were joined by two Collegiate 4-H members as well
for a wonderful weekend of learning and team building. If you are
curious as to just what this event is ask Avery Baker, Brennan Mestas,
or Garrett Riggs...they can tell you some stories! The next Rendezvous
will be in 2014.
June is going to be an extremely busy month for everyone I know, with
school getting over for the year and all that entails. I am sure many of
you will be taking on summer work and many chores as well as really
putting a lot of time into your projects whatever they may be. I, too,
will be very busy this month with a training next week, then the State
Horse Camp, the State 4-H Invitational Shoot, and Summer Conference
all on the docket before July. So if you cannot catch me in the office for
something this month be sure and send an e-mail; I for sure will keep
up with that. See you around the County!!

Congratulations, Graduates!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who'll decide where to go.
~Dr. Seuss
Congratulations to all 4-H members who are graduating this year. We
wish you safe celebrations and safe travels as you enjoy your summer,
move out of town for summer employment or to begin your time at
college.
We trust that your years in 4-H have given you experiences that will
serve you well wherever life may take you. Further, we hope that you
will consider staying with the 4-H program as an adult volunteer leader.
Collegiate 4-H
The OSU Collegiate 4-H Chapter began in 1929 and has a long and
proud history at Oregon State University. In 2000 the club earned the
national club of the year award in the new club division.
The club is a community service-based and social club housed out of
the 4-H Youth Development Department of the College of Education.
Collegiate 4-H provides them a unique way to stay involved with the
4-H program through our motto, “sharing to continue, continuing to
share.”
Experience in Collegiate 4-H is often cited as a significant contributor
to the success of members after college. Many Collegiate 4-H alumni
say that what they learned in 4-H helped them get their first job or into
the graduate or vet school of their choice.

Record Books ▪ Record Books ▪ Record Books
Completing 4-H Record Books may not always
be fun, but it definitely is rewarding to look
back and see your accomplishments put on
paper. Through 4-H Record Books, youth
learn organizational skills and goal setting &
evaluation. If time is set aside periodically
to do what can be done through that point,
the Record Books do not become a
dreadful, overwhelming task. One method
that works for many people is to keep a
special 4-H calendar; this can be used to
record anything from meeting or community service
dates, to deadlines, to purchases made for your projects. Anything
that relates to your projects can be recorded on this calendar as it
occurs and then can be easily transferred into the appropriate places in
your 4-H Record Books. It is important to identify what will work best
for you and then use that system. Record keeping is a skill you will
need all of your life so we encourage you to start with good habits
now!
A few things that should be up to date through now include:
1. Did you close out your 2010-2011 records? If not, that is the first
place to start.
2. Enter the same numbers from your closing inventory into this
year’s records as beginning inventory.
3. If you haven’t been keeping track of 4-H events you have done
since October 1 when the 4-H year started, think back and write
those down before you forget.
4. Have you been taking pictures of your 4-H activities this year? If
so, organize them into a 4-H folder or wherever you can easily find
them. If not - start now!
5. If your project area uses advancements, skim through the
worksheets and see if there is anything you have already done that
can be checked off. Take a look to see if there is anything that you
could plan to do within the next month.

Pre-Fair Record Book Check
This year, as with years past, record books will be a requirement for
participation in county fair. Keeping accurate records of your 4-H
project work is an essential element in the process of experiential
learning in all areas of 4-H programming. The skills you learn through
record keeping will benefit you greatly throughout life. For your
convenience, record books may be pre-checked this year at the
Extension Office from July 16-27. For those members in the dog, horse,
or home and family sciences projects I would suggest having your
books checked the first week of the time frame. If you choose not to
have your records pre-checked please have them with you when you
arrive at the fair office for cat fair, horse fair, dog fair, or small animals;
the check-in table for home and family sciences; and the scale for
livestock projects during your respective fair times.
The following elements will be required:

Identification page

Overview, goals, & purpose (complete)

Operating Budget (complete)

Opening Inventory (complete)

Animal Identification page (horse & dog only)

Feed & Growth up to date through July 15
(all animal science projects)

Health & Maintenance Record up to date through July 15
(all animal science projects)

Non-Animal Activities Record up to date through July 15
(all non-animal projects)

Last year’s county record books as an appendix
(all members/all projects, except first-year members)

Activate Oregon State Retreat
By: Isaac Blodgett
During spring break I had the opportunity to go to the Activate
Oregon State 4-H Retreat, sponsored by the Ford Family Foundation.
The retreat was held at the Oregon 4-H Center in Salem, Oregon.
During the retreat I participated in activities that helped me learn more
about youth-adult partnerships. I learned about two youth adult
partnerships right here in Oregon: Matt’s Chemo Bags and Links of
Love Hope 2 Hope. They are both non-profit organizations.
Matt’s Chemo Bags was started by a boy whose mom suffered
from breast cancer. His mom always carried a bag with her to her
treatments that included items like a pillow, blanket, hand sanitizer
etc. With the help of adults in his life, including his now-healthy mom,
Matt started this foundation to make and send similar bags to people
diagnosed with breast cancer.
Links of Love Hope 2 Hope is an anti-bullying campaign started
by Zach, who was bullied as a freshman in high school. The bullying
was so bad that Zach had to leave school and is now home schooled. I
am really excited about this program because I was asked to serve on
the board of directors! Links of Love’s Facebook page is currently under
construction, but you can find Matt’s Chemo Bags on Facebook right
now! Please go “like” this page.
I am so glad I went to
this camp; I made so
many new friends! I
can’t wait to go to
Summer Conference so
I can see them again. I
hope lots of you will
join me this summer at
Oregon State
University for 4-H
Summer Conference!
L-R: Dave, Isaac, Malcolm, Tommy and Zach sing 'Little Red Wagon" for a skit
performed at the Activate Oregon 4-H Camp held at the Oregon 4-H Center in Salem,
OR over Spring Break.

2012 44--H Summer Conference
SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE!
Thanks to the generosity of several donors, we do have funds available
to provide scholarships for several people to attend 4-H Summer
Conference. Depending upon the number of interested applicants, we
have funds available to pay for at least half and possibly more of the
registration fees for Klamath County youth. Please don’t be shy - ask
us about attending!
There is also a need for adult chaperones and the scholarship funds
can be used to help pay for the adult registration fees as well. Please
turn the page for more information about the class offerings.

STATE AMBASSADORS
Applications due June 1
State Ambassador applications are due in the state office by June 1,
2012. Youth in grades 9, 10 and 11 may apply. Application and
reference forms are available on the state website. Applicants must
attend Summer Conference for a training session and an interview.
Youth who are currently State Ambassadors must reapply to remain on
the team.
State Ambassadors help at many state events and serve on state
committees. Their main function, however, is to promote 4-H in their
counties and across the state. They do this by visiting schools,
presenting to service organizations, talking to the media, and a variety
of other activities.

Bullying
What comes to mind when you see the term bullying? It generally
does not evoke a positive connotation in our minds and nor should it.
Bullying behavior can be defined as an act of aggression whether
verbal or physical toward another person. There are numerous ways
that this behavior may be manifested and not one is acceptable
behavior in the 4-H program. There is a great deal of difference
between light-hearted fun and joking when both parties agree to
participate, and mean and destructive verbal abuse when the
“teasing” is one sided.
If you as a 4-H member, parent,
sibling, or leader see this behavior
being displayed immediately seek out
your club leader, a superintendent or
your 4-H Agent and report the
behavior. The 4-H program is about
positive youth development and
belonging, therefore bullying and
exclusionary behavior have no place
within the program. Remember as participants in the program we all
(youth and adults) sign a code of conduct that asks us all to be civil to
one another at all times, and participation is a privilege.

International Exchange
There is a need for families to host
inbound youth for summer 2012. Many
families who have participated in the
past in Klamath County have had a
wonderful experience and made
memories that will last forever. This is a wonderful program to be
involved with and we encourage all to participate.
