Jed’s Journal
Well, crew, here we are again...it is very nearly County Fair time! This
year is looking to be another great fair season. I have had the chance to
see many of your project animals and hear of your wears and other
project areas and you are all going to make quite a showing.
Remember in these last few weeks of feeding a market animal it is
critical to get your mix just right. With the warmer weather really
watch carefully as some will go off of their feed and that is the last
thing you want to happen while you are trying to put a great finish on
them.
I had the pleasure of attending Summer Conference with a great group
of Klamath County 4-H’ers a very big thank you to all of you for
representing our county so well: Ben and Josiah Kays, Avery Baker,
Garrett Riggs, Jacob Morris, Isaac Blodgett, Amber Jones, and Michael
Strode. A very special thanks as well to Mrs. Rebecca Kays for being a
chaperone this year. I hope that you all had a great time and plan on
attending again next year and get a friend to go along too.
I am looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces down at the
fairgrounds. Let us all be great examples to the community of what 4-H
members, leaders, parents, and staff are all about throughout the
course of fair. Keep in mind at all times your Heads for clearer thinking,
your Hearts to greater loyalty, your Hands to larger service (there is a
lot of opportunity to help each other at fair), and your Health to better
living throughout it all!

Community Service Opportunities
4-H’ers - there have been a couple of opportunities presented lately for
you all to really help our community, and help those that help and
support you all. The Klamath County Fairgrounds crew is working a
few less hours than in the past due to our economic situation. As such
they could really use a hand around the fairgrounds from time to time
to clean up and shape up as they always do. They could use a hand of
course before fair, and right afterwards for a week or two, but keep in
mind they maintain the grounds all year so you can help out any time,
as a club or individual.
Another opportunity is to help the Klamath County Rotarians out with
the garden. Every year they put together a production garden at the
OSU KBREC Research Station from which the produce goes to support
our local food bank. This one garden feeds a number of people who
really need the help. Remember Rotary also is our major supporter for
the auction during fair. They
would love to have some helping
hands to weed and maintain the
garden. To get in contact with
them check in with Sharon Parks
at 541-882-7168 or
[email protected].

Livestock Auction Buyer’s Pool
The pool was started 14 years ago when a group of concerned citizens
realized that there were a lot of businesses and individuals who
wanted to support the 4-H Livestock program, but could not afford to
buy an individual lot at the auction. The pool was created to allow
those people to be able to participate at whatever level they could
afford. All donations are accepted, but any donation of at least $100
qualifies the donor for a ticket for 2 to the buyer's dinner. The funds
collected are divided proportionally amongst the species, and a small
amount is saved as seed money for the next year.
For more information about the buyer’s pool, contact Shawn
Blodgett at 541-891-9848 or Amanda Blodgett at 541-8918987. If you know someone who would like to support the
livestock auction but thinks it is too expensive, put them in
touch with Shawn or Amanda as no donation is too small!
Rodeo Incorporating 4-H and FFA Again!
For the Friday and Saturday night performances, the Champs and Res.
Champs gather by the event center’s north entrance for the Parade of
Champions. For those who can be available at that time they love to
have you go in and be announced to the rodeo patrons!
Pre-Fair Record Book Check
This year, as with last year, record books will be a requirement for
participation in county fair. For your convenience, record books may
be pre-checked this year at the Extension Office from July 16-27. If you
choose not to have your records pre-checked please have them with
you when you arrive at the fair office for dog fair, cat fair, horse fair, or
small animals; the check-in table for home and family sciences; and the
scale for livestock projects during your respective fair times.
Please see the May/June newsletter for the required elements or
contact our office for more information.
