Jed’s Journal Hello all and welcome to nearly Fall of 2012. Summer has come and passed as has our Fair Season. You all did an amazing job this year with your projects and citizenship that you all displayed so well during both Klamath County Fair and the Oregon State Fair. As with all things however this brings our 4-H year to a close for 2012. Though the up side to that is that the new year starts the day after the old is officially over. Yes, I know, where is the break, right? With the close of summer of course that means that school is back in session once again. I certainly hope you are all off to a great start this newsletter reaching you somewhere around three or four weeks into the fall quarter. As you all have displayed throughout the summer how well you do with your 4-H and FFA projects that you have such passion for I am sure that you will all perform very well scholastically as well! For those of you with large livestock projects such as beef remember this time of year is when you should be looking to purchase your next project. The fall feeder sales are soon to start, so if you have a rancher or breeder you are hoping to buy from you might really be thinking seriously about contacting them sooner rather than later. It is my sincere hope that you all had an enjoyable, educational and therefore beneficial and productive 4-H year. I know that personally you all made it a great year to be your agent, thank you for that. Let’s keep up the good work and move forward into the new year with a fresh perspective and enthusiastic attitude. JED The only limit of our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith . - Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt Page 2 September/October 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Klamath County 4-H Enrollment Here’s the scoop on the enrollment deadlines for this year! Friday, October 26: Returning Leader enrollments due Friday, November 30: Returning Member enrollment deadline Friday, January 4: New Member enrollment deadline The enrollment fee is remaining at $30/member with a $60/household maximum. Re-enrollment packets have been made available to the club leaders. Members should be hearing from their leaders soon to confirm enrollment for the upcoming year. As a courtesy to your clubs, please don’t wait until the last day to enroll so that the leaders know if they have room to accept new members or not. We hope there are not issues with late enrollments this year as each person has more than two months’ notice of the deadlines! Message for parents in the new 4-H year Parents can also be 4-H leaders, this is not new; but many parents do not take advantage of this opportunity, or don’t feel comfortable with the role, or for whatever reason they just choose not to. However, as we make a fresh start we would just like to remind everybody that this can take some of the burden off of the main club leaders and help keep more parents in the loop if they want to complete the process of becoming a 4-H volunteer. The cost to enroll as a leader is still only $1 ($2 for horse leaders) which covers the accident insurance premium. More people will be given the chance to get more information from our office. Additionally, enrolled 4-H leaders have voting privileges in the 4-H Leaders Association meetings which is a direct link to helping steer the decisions that are made and the direction of the local programming. It’s simple to get the process started so please contact us if you are interested in becoming one of our valued volunteers! Page 3 September/October 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Klamath County 4-H at the State Fair! L to R: Daniel Beavers, Meranda Humphrey, Pam Greene, Diane Keith, Elise Balin, Daniel Greene, Isaac Blodgett, Jared Jones. Several Klamath County members headed to Salem in late August with pygmy goats, swine, and cattle to compete at the Oregon State 4-H Fair. Early morning feeding and cleaning, convincing the herdsmanship judge that your stalls were the cleanest, and long days preparing and caring for animals paid off with exciting competition and several champion ribbons and a few buckles – Klamath County was well represented! As a leader, chaperone and superintendent, that alone makes Diane Keith proud. However, her proudest moments came watching kids who were competitors in their home county become friends and team members at this show. They were supportive of each other – more than one swine member helped prepare and show some pygmy goats and she knows there were more than swine kids washing hogs and cleaning the wash racks! Watching the whole team curl up in the sawdust around the cow and calf and talk to each other on the last day was the best. These new acquaintances crossed county lines as well when more than one new friendship was forged from opposite ends of the state. A comment was made during one of the morning meetings that in 20 years, no one will remember who won but you will remember the friendships and fun that you had. How true! What was the best quote heard at state fair? “I’ll see you next year!” Consider joining us in 2013! Page 4 September/October 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op State Fair Congratulations! The youth, volunteers, parents, faculty and staff of the Klamath County 4-H and FFA programs are very lucky to have your strong support. The youth of Klamath County this year put into circulation more than 26 tons of high quality protein into the market, both local and regionally. That is quite an impressive number for a youth livestock sale in modern times. This further translates into just over $490,000 in gross revenue associated with the Youth Livestock Auction. Thank you again Klamath County Rotary Club and the kind people at South Valley Bank & Trust for all of the time and expertise you put into this sale. Also a very big thank you to Mr. Stan Dupree and his team that do such a fine job of auctioneering ensuring the very best outcome for all of our youth. Following are the average prices per pound per species for the sale this year: Swine .......................... $4.36/lb Sheep .......................... $5.23/lb Poultry ...................... $13.76/lb Turkeys ..................... $10.36/lb Beef ............................. $2.79/lb Goats ......................... $10.40/lb Rabbits ...................... $23.05/lb Rotary Livestock Loan Program For all who are planning on raising a large livestock animal for the coming 2012-2013 4-H year be aware that there is indeed a loan program offered by our Klamath County Rotary Club to aid in the purchase and or feeding and care of your animal. The club has a large pool of money that they are willing to assist in your project with and they love to see the funds utilized. For more information regarding this program and where to get the applications please call the extension office at 541-883-7131. Page 7 September/October 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op The Oregon 4-H Science Video Contest is Here! Thanks to support from the Oregon 4-H Foundation, the State 4-H Science Team is holding a Science Video Contest. Please access information about submitting a video off the Communications, Videography page at http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/videography-1. Youth are encouraged to showcase the science across all project areas - Animal Science, Home Environment, Foods, Natural Science and Technology. There will be extra points for innovation in the project area chosen. Videos are to be 2- 3 minutes in length and conform to the 4-H videography exhibit requirements. All the submissions will be posted in the Spring and a “People’s Choice” award winner will be chosen. The top 3-5 videos will be posted to the State 4-H web site and QR codes will be generated for them. Counties who have wireless access at events will be able to use the QR codes to let folks at the events (fair, farmers market, community garden, etc.) get more information about 4-H and the science in 4-H projects. 4-H National Youth Science Day Wednesday, October 10, 2012 Get ready to take the 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge! 4-H National Headquarters and National 4-H Council are pleased to reveal the 2012 National Science Experiment for 4-H National Youth Science Day. The 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge will introduce youth to engineering concepts as they program a self-directed robot to clean up a simulated environmental spill. Participation in 4-H National Youth Science Day is meant to help spark an early passion for science, engineering and math and to encourage young people to consider these paths of study and future careers. In many ways for 4-H and FFA this would/could be a very good change. Stay posted and as information is made available the Extension office will post it. No decision will be made for at least 30 days and it is our understanding that a change of more than one week will likely not take place for 2013 although further changes may be made in future years. International Exchange 2013 Inbound international 4-H exchange opportunities include the following: Norway, Japan and Argentina (2013 dates are still tentative). 2013 Outbound international 4-H exchange opportunities include the following: Argentina, Australia, Finland, Japan, and Tanzania. This is a wonderful program to be involved with and we encourage all to participate. For information about these opportunities, contact Katie Feinauer with the Around The World 4-H Club at 541-892-0958. Quick Response Codes Have you wondered what this is? It is a Quick Response (QR) code. They are used for condensing a lot of information into a jumbled mess of pixels and empty space that, when photographed by a smartphone or tablet, can link to a website. Free apps such as Google Goggles are available for most phones and tablets to make use of the QR codes. It is as simple as pointing the phone or tablet’s camera at the code, allowing the website to load, and browsing as you normally would. You will start to see these on future flyers, documents and correspondence. Just point, click, and browse. Page 12 September/October 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Record Book Contest Youth and Leaders If you wish to submit your 4-H record book for judging and awards for 2012 the due date to the extension office is Friday, October 5, 2012 by the close of business (5:00pm) to the Extension office.
