Jed’s Journal Welcome to late fall and early winter in Klamath County everyone!! The weather continues to be on the fritz it would seem at this time so it is indeed hard to say what or when the weather may change. For all of you who might have been or are still out in the hunting woods or sage I hope that your seasons were bountiful and many great experiences and memories were created. For me fall is a time of creating memories on the largest scale and this year was certainly no different. If you have time I will spin you a tale of a whopper of an elk season, but I won’t fill the pages here with that. Winter in Klamath County can find us all hiding in our houses more hours of the day than we otherwise would, which allows us all some time for all of those things throughout the year we don’t have time for when we can be outside. So be looking to your record books and educational activities with your clubs; this is a great time to get a jump on that part of the program! It is also a time to enjoy one another’s company and camaraderie and to really build a strong sense of community within your club and the larger community. Start planning your fundraising events for the year now so you have a plan and direction to head; the same goes for your educational endeavors...get a jump on them! Finally, it is the Holiday Season as well! Remember with all the hustle and bustle and for some the travel be careful and considerate in all that we do as a 4-H community. Remember to lend a hand to those that could use one, tell someone thank-you for a job well done, and spoil your pets or livestock just a little more. Sometimes just a friendly gesture may make someone’s day, and this time of year it becomes a bit easier perhaps for us all to put that in focus. For you all I wish you a Merry Christmas or whatever your holiday may be and may it be a wonderful one!! JED Page 2 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Klamath County 4-H Enrollment Returning member enrollment has ended. Enrollment forms for new members should be signed by the club leaders and all forms should be complete with both the youth and parent signatures before they are turned in to us. Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give . - Eleanor Roosevelt State 4-H Scholarships Information on 2013 State 4-H scholarships and County/State 4-H Fair scholarships has been updated and is now available at http:// oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/oregon-4hscholarships. We encourage members who are heading to college in fall 2013 to apply! Applications must be approved and signed by county 4-H agents; to meet this requirement applications must be turned into our office no later than February 20, 2013. Page 3 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Recognition Committee The State Recognition Committee is looking to fill 5 spots this year, and welcomes nominations from Klamath County. The committee is made up of agents and volunteers from across the state. Please consider joining the committee; it is a great way to learn about how to get our county involved. The State Recognition Committee meets twice annually to select National 4-H Congress and State 4-H Scholarship winners. In addition, the committee selects the winners of the state level awards in Leadership, Communication, Citizenship, and Community Service. Being a member of the committee is a wonderful opportunity to learn about all that 4-H members do and how 4-H plays a central role in the development of many youth. Serving on the committee is also a great way for to learn about the opportunities available to older 4-H members. Members of the committee serve a term of 3 years. The time obligation is concentrated around two yearly meetings, with little obligation outside of those times. In 2013 the committee will meet in Corvallis on March 21-22 and June 27-28. The March meeting is devoted to the initial review of State Resumes and the selection of National 4-H Congress finalists and scholarship and state award winners. The June meeting takes place in conjunction with the OSU Summer Conference and is dedicated to interviewing and selecting delegates to National 4-H Congress which will be held in Atlanta next November. The short nomination form is due December 15th. Contact us for further information! Page 4 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Be a Mentor Research shows it often only takes one key adult for a young person to develop a positive attitude and gain confidence in his or her ability to lead a successful life. If adults throughout our community see this as part of their civic and moral responsibility, 100 percent graduation is a very realistic goal for the Basin. In other words, all adults can be “treasure hunters” for our youth. Please consider what you can do to help the young people you know build hope in their futures and confidence in themselves. The above is an excerpt from a Guest Commentary by Paul Hillyer in the 9/22/12 Herald & News. The entire article can be accessed at: http://www.heraldandnews.com/members/forum/guest_commentary/ article_39d33c90-f4c1-11e1-aeac-001a4bcf887a.html. Although the article was not written about 4-H, it is certainly true of our dedicated volunteers...everyone has something to contribute and each of us has a gift we can share with others and perhaps make a difference in the life of one or more young people. If you are not yet a 4-H volunteer, ask us about the simple process to become a club or project leader. You never know when you will be the one to make an important difference in someone’s life! Page 5 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest Essays are due in the State 4-H office by February 1, 2013. The 4-H Beekeeping Essay is a great opportunity for 4-H members to research and write about honey bees. Cash prizes of $750, $500 and $250 will be awarded to the 3 top National winners. The essay theme for 2013 is "Reducing the Usage of Bee-Killing Pesticides in my Community.” Contest details are located at http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/4h-beekeeping-essay-contest. 4-H members can also use the information they gather to make an educational display for the fair. Essay contestants are not required to be enrolled in a 4-H beekeeping project. TRAILBLAZER NIGHT Back by popular demand! As we did a few years ago, Oregon 4-H will again have a 4-H Night at the Rose Garden. Contact us to obtain the form to order speciallypriced tickets for a Portland Trail Blazer game on Wednesday, March 27 against the Brooklyn Nets. Orders must be in by March 6, 2013! After the game, 4-H people will be invited down on the court to shoot free throws, take pictures, and meet players. People attending should wear 4-H attire. One family who attended a couple of years ago says: even though it’s in the 300 section…the design of the Rose Garden is such that it’s just as exciting and engaging for the kids and adults up there as it is in lower levels! With everyone wearing some kind of 4-H attire, people were noticing AND they even had the “Welcome 4-H” digital sign up on the jumbo screen for all to see…so the kids were screaming and shouting showing their “thanks” for being recognized for attending! Take advantage of this fun opportunity. Page 6 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Fair Dates for 2013 It has been confirmed that the Klamath County Fair will retain the same time frame as years past. Thus the Fair will take place August 7th through the 11th of 2013. Horse fair will continue to be the week prior to that as well as the statics portion of our Fair time activities. The schedule for 2014 is still currently under review; as the Extension Office is made aware of any changes or confirmations the information will be forwarded to members and leaders in an appropriate and expedient manner. Klamath Clover Co-Op Newsletter The Clover focuses on events, trainings, general information and deadlines. We mail one copy to each enrolled household of everyone involved in Klamath County 4-H. It is important to share the newsletter with others in your home. We encourage clubs and individuals to submit photos and articles. All information must be received in the 4-H Office by the 2nd Wednesday of odd-numbered months and may be submitted to: [email protected]. Rotary Livestock Loan Program For all who are planning on raising a large livestock animal for the coming 2012-2013 4-H year be aware that there is indeed a loan program offered by our Klamath County Rotary Club to aid in the purchase and/or feeding and care of your animal. The club has a large pool of money that they are willing to assist in your project with and they love to see the funds utilized. For more information regarding this program please call the extension office at 541-883-7131 or obtain the application at http:// www.kcrotary.org/LivestockLoanApp.cfm. Page 7 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op Kudos!! Payton Bustos of Malin has been a busy young lady, continuing after the Klamath County Fair showing her heifers and steers at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair, the Jackson County Harvest Fair, and with a big win at the Cow Palace near San Francisco, California where she won Champion Progress Steer with her locallyborn & raised steer! From there, Payton showed in the Cascade Classic in Redmond and in Orland, California at the Northern Exposure jackpot steer and heifer show where she took home several top prizes. Payton’s club leader is her mom; Deanna says she is so proud of her daughter and notes that she is continually amazed with Payton’s perseverance and work ethic. In addition to winning some top prizes, Payton has pocketed some nice jackpot money which should boost her college fund. While keeping busy with her cattle, Payton didn’t neglect her studies; she still managed to be named to the Honor Roll in school! Payton is shown here on the cover of the Pacific Showcase Magazine with her Champion heifer at our Klamath County Fair. She maintains a small herd of her own Simmental x Angus cattle, with three of her nice show steers expected to be seen at next year’s Klamath County Fair and two going to the Jackson County Fair. Payton is an example of a 4-H member who has taken her project above and beyond! If you want to find out how to be more involved with your projects, give us a call. There are opportunities for jackpot shows for both large and small animals, contests for nonanimal projects, and of course many opportunities through 4-H for leadership, citizenship, foreign and stateside exchanges, and more. To take your projects to the next level, simply ask how! “It's amazing what ordinary people can do if they set out without preconceived notions.” - Charles F. The workshops at the WRLF 2013 will inspire and enable adults and youth to gain a better understanding of themselves, others, and their world as we continue to Strive for Excellence. Developing life skills will help participants grow and become more capable contributors to 4-H families, clubs, and communities. The workshops should emphasize leadership, communication, science, technology, and cultural experiences. Activities will focus on, but are not limited to, looking at different aspects of our lives in an experiential, hands-on format. Go to the Kulia I Ka Nu’u website for more information at: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/wrlf/ After the annual Western Region Forum, participants can be part of local training. Volunteers can share an idea for clubs or counties to consider, distribute a lesson plan, make a connection to a website, and/or encourage others to get involved in new ways. The deadline for Early Bird registration ($295) has been extended to January 7! January 8 – February 21, 2013 the registration fee is: $375. After February 22, the registration fee is $425. To register for the conference, you will need your hotel confirmation code from the Marriott Waikiki Beach. Due to conference costs, there will be a $400 surcharge for participants who choose to stay at a different hotel. In 2015, the Oregon 4-H Program will host the Western Region Leaders’ Forum in Portland! If time & travel have been a hurdle to your attendance at these forums in the past, 2015 will be the year for you! Page 12 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op BRRRRRRR... As our winter temperatures begin to dip, those with animals (livestock as well as small animals, pets & birds!) need to be sure you are providing proper care for the animals to help them through this time. Water is an important but not-so-obvious concern; drinking too-cold water not only lowers the animal’s body temperature but increases the caloric level needed for maintenance. For further information you can refer to “EC 1635” at http://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/ where you will be directed to not only a PDF publication but you can also access a Podcast there! Be Safe! Winter is great, but with it come some specific things we need to be aware of to keep us safe and injury-free. Home fires are more prevalent in the winter months than any other season. Winter fire hazards include cooking, space heaters, fireplaces and candles. Each year, hundreds of people die from hypothermia...Don’t be one of them! Be careful to avoid head injuries when playing winter sports (skiing, sledding, snowboarding, snowmobiling). Be safe when driving! Remember it takes us all a few days to “remember” how to drive on slick roads. According to the CDC, carbon monoxide detectors save lives, but less than one-third of American homes have one installed. Do you? This is the time of year we see an increase in the number of people who suffer from food-borne illness. At parties and potlucks, foods may sit out for longer periods of time. Be aware of food safety. Page 13 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op West-Watters-Buchanan Scholarship needs help! For many of the older youth with livestock in our local 4-H and FFA programs, the West-Watters-Buchanan Scholarship is known as one of the largest scholarships not only for the initial amount typically granted to deserving recipients, but also because the scholarship has historically included the option for an annual renewal opportunity. Typically the largest fundraiser of the year occurs at the Klamath County Fair Rotary Junior Livestock Auction; this year, the amount raised was markedly reduced which leaves the scholarship fund in the position of potentially not being able to continue giving at the level they have in the past. You can help! If you or a business you know of is in a position of being able to make a contribution, tax-deductible donations in any amount can be made to the West-Watters-Buchanan Scholarship fund and can be sent to our office at 3328 Vandenberg Road, Klamath Falls, OR 97603. If you would like further information about the history and eligibility for this important scholarship, feel free to contact us. Leaders Association News As of the Klamath County 4-H Leaders Association meeting held November 19th, 2012 a new assessment has been created by the leaders in a fundraising effort. From that date forward all new and returning leaders will be asked to pay $10 upon membership as opposed to the previous $1 ($2 horse leaders) fee for insurance. This new membership “dues” style assessment will aid in providing support for leaders and youth alike to valuable educational activities in and out of the county through the year. For those leaders who have already enrolled for the year, while not required to pay this due it would be of great benefit if you would consider doing so for this year. Page 14 November/December 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op 4-H Recognition Night 2012 On November 13th, Klamath County 4-H recognized the members and volunteer leaders for achievements of the past year. We hope that those who were able to attend took away a sample of what can be achieved in the 4-H program along with an appreciation for all of the adult volunteers who make it happen for all of the youth. The evening was made possible thanks to generous donations by Floyd A. Boyd Co., Yummy's Cowboy Cuisine, Turn Thom Tire Factory, The Cakery, Sherm's Thunderbird Market, Safeway, and Albertsons; desserts were served by the Langell Valley Beef club. Please remember to thank these businesses who do so much for our program year after year! Those of you who have been in our program for the last few years will remember that our Recognition Night dinners have been cooked by the awesome crew at Yummy’s Cowboy Cuisine. Yummy’s has a fun, new service called Dad's Turn to Cook and each Thursday they feature a different menu of a complete meal to serve 4-6 people for only $45 per order or $55 with dessert. Call (541) 798-5700 or email them at [email protected] with your order. Yummy’s also has a Christmas Eve dinner special you can read about on their Facebook page. Tell them you are with the Klamath County 4-H program and you appreciate their continued support! Did you know??? With a combined annual production estimated at more than 11 million trees, Oregon, Washington, & Idaho produce more than one-quarter of all Christmas trees grown in the country. An acre of Christmas trees provides the daily oxygen requirements of 18 people. Recycled trees have been used to make sand and soil erosion barriers and been placed in ponds for fish shelter. For 2013 the Klamath County 4-H program would like to reintroduce this valuable piece of the program. Starting in January of the New Year the council will begin meeting at least once per month to reestablish their mission and direction. For all older youth in the county 9th-12th grade this is a great opportunity for leadership in the program outside of your club. You will have the ability to be a direct voice to the executive council within the 4-H leaders association as well as direct communication and advisement with the 4-H program staff. This is really your chance to help your fellow 4-H’ers have the program you all would like to have. The first inaugural meeting will be held January 23rd, 2013 at the extension office conference room from 5:00pm until 6:30pm, at which time future meeting schedules will be created.
