Jed’s Journal Well crew here we are smack dab in the middle of winter and it sure has been flexing its chilly grip here of late. As I write this piece today it is certainly warmer than we have experienced in the last couple of weeks and with a smidgen of precipitation on the horizon. We all know we could use more snow for the winter so we have a good irrigation season. With all of the cold and snow we have had to date I hope all of you are making it along through winter in a healthy and happy fashion. This past weekend my wife and I had the pleasure of once again teaching and chaperoning 112 youth in central Oregon at the High Desert Leadership Retreat, and what a great experience that was. Also this past weekend was the PLAY Outdoors event held here in Klamath County which I know that some of you amazing 4-H’er worked at and others participated in. That event had right at 2500 people in attendance and somewhere around 1500 were youth, excellent job Klamath County residents! Remember this is the time of year to be thinking about all the bookwork we might have related to our 4-H projects. If you find something you could use a hand or mind with related to your 4-H projects please feel free to contact myself or Misty here at the office so that we might help you along. Also, if you have some idea of a class or workshop that would benefit your 4-H peers please let me know so we can help in whatever way would be the most beneficial to you? The Klamath Bull and Horse Sale is also just around the corner and I am sure I will see many of you in and around the Fairgrounds for that as well. I would be willing to bet that some of you may even be getting into the Ranch Rodeo portion one of these days perhaps even this time around. Believe me we do cheer for all of our 4-H youth when we hear your names announced at any event we attend! (Continued on page 3) Page 2 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Keep an eye open for upcoming 4-H related workshops and opportunities as they come up as we move along this winter. Look to the Training Corner section of the newsletter to catch some of the opportunities that are coming down the pike. Stay safe, stay warm, stay dry, and most of all have fun! Page 3 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Urban-Rural Exchange 2013 It is time once again for the Urban-Rural 4-H Exchange, this being the seventh year of the program. The program continues to grow and build our impact on urban Oregon based on the education the SE Portland youth receive from our participating rural counties. This year we still have Multnomah, Grant, Wallowa and Klamath Counties however we have added Harney, Wheeler and very likely Union Counties to the role as well for 2013. The urban youth I know are very excited to get down here or out to any of the other participating counties, as they have already been sending in their applications to Maureen in Portland. The Urban Exchange portion of the program will take place this year in March running from 3/13 thru 3/17. This is the piece of the program for the 7th and 8th graders of the Klamath County 4-H program to go to Portland for those five days and see how they live and operate and how their charter school (Sunnyside Environmental School) functions. They really do enjoy having you all as guests. If you are interested in that trip please go to this site and pick up the application and get it in to the Klamath Office by February 8th so they can match you up with a host family: http://www.4hwildlifestewards.org/Oregon%20Programs/UrbanRural%20Exchange/index.html. Also for the Urban portion of the exchange if you are a parent of an interested youth please consider being a chaperone for the trip, it is a great experience. Jed will be unable to attend the trip this year and as such for any youth to (Continued on page 5) Page 4 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op participate we will really need a strong and willing volunteer to make this happen. For youth participants the Urban portion of the program will have a registration fee of $90 due upon receipt of your application. The Rural Exchange portion is set for 4/4 thru 4/9. In similar fashion it will be 7th and 8th grade youth from SE Portland coming here to Klamath County. We expect to have 10 youth from Portland headed our way for the exchange. This of course means that we are looking for host families as well, and in the case of having 10 youth from Portland that means we need 5 families for the youth to stay with (2 per family) and up to three possible places for chaperones to stay as well. If you might have room on your farm or ranch to host these folks it would be great. We will start making phone calls to prospective hosts soon, but if this sounds like something you would be interested in please don’t hesitate to get the ball rolling and call us now. The website previously mentioned also has the application available to be a host family. National 4-H Congress Applications due Member applications for National 4-H Congress must be approved and signed by county 4-H agents; to meet this requirement applications must be turned into our office no later than February 20, 2013. Applications are located at http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/the-state4h-resume. In mid-March the State Recognition committee will select the Congress finalists who will be interviewed during 4-H Summer Conference in late June. National 4-H Congress Fundraising Efforts Are Underway! For the older youth of Klamath County please give some thought to National 4-H Congress for the coming years. Many Congress delegates describe attending this event as the highlight of their 4-H career. Unfortunately, over the past few years, the number of Oregon delegates we have been able to send to National 4-H Congress has decreased dramatically. In 2004 we sent a group of 27 youth; in 2012 we could afford to send only 17. Page 5 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Summer Conference June 26-29, 2013 While it is still many months until summer arrives it is still not too early to be looking towards summer events. Remember some of these events have a registration fee, such as Summer Conference where it will cost around $250 to attend. Those of you that would be interested in attending events like this please do not hesitate to get in contact with Jed so you can all work together on getting some fundraisers underway to help with the cost. TRAILBLAZER NIGHT Back by popular demand! As we did a few years ago, Oregon 4-H will again have a 4-H Night at the Rose Garden. Contact us to obtain the form to order speciallypriced tickets for a Portland Trail Blazer game on Wednesday, March 27 against the Brooklyn Nets. Orders must be in by March 6, 2013! After the game, 4-H people will be invited down on the court to shoot free throws, take pictures, and meet players. People attending should wear 4-H attire. One family who attended a couple of years ago says: even though it’s in the 300 section…the design of the Rose Garden is such that it’s just as exciting and engaging for the kids and adults up there as it is in lower levels! With everyone wearing some kind of 4-H attire, people were noticing AND they even had the “Welcome 4-H” digital sign up on the jumbo screen for all to see…so the kids were screaming and shouting showing their “thanks” for being recognized for attending! Take advantage of this fun opportunity. The revisions are in place and in effect for 2013. The forms have been updated on the county website, along with the Guidelines document that explains in great detail how to complete your record book. Further workshops will be offered also to aid in the understanding and successful completion of your 4-H record book. These records are very important not only on the management of your projects but also for the scholarship opportunities that may come down the road for all of you. Record Book Committee Meeting st February 21 , 2013 the Klamath County 4-H Record Book Committee will meet to discuss scoring rubrics for the record book competition. The meeting will start at 5:30pm at the Extension Office 3328 Vandenberg Road. COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE!! Please be sure to read and share the various opportunities highlighted in the monthly newsletters. Set aside time to discuss important information such as deadlines, expectations, roles and responsibilities, opportunities and exciting achievements shared in the monthly newsletter. Unfortunately, we sometimes hear that 4-H families didn't know about fun activities or important dates when this information was shared in the monthly newsletter! Does the newsletter cover everything? No, there are training resources, project manuals, rule books and various other resources to use throughout the year. The newsletter provides current updates and opportunities. E-mail is another way we often communicate; if you are not receiving our e-mail messages please send Misty an e-mail at [email protected] and ask to be added to the list. Please let us know if there is something you need or don't understand. We are here to help build positive youth development opportunities for all youth in Klamath County! Page 9 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Page 10 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Page 11 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Farm Expo 2013 It is almost time again for the Farm Expo, an opportunity for the community to get re-acquainted with our rich agricultural resources. On February 27 and 28, 4th-graders from Klamath and Lake counties visit the John Hancock Event Center to taste locally grown foods and have a hands-on learning time with animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, beef & dairy cattle, small animals, and horses. Crops such as hay, grains, potatoes, and mint will be highlighted along with the everpopular bee station where students can sample a honey stick! Groups representing other important aspects of agriculture such as water and forestry education and weed and pest control will also be present to talk with visitors. Guests will learn interesting facts about the various aspects of agriculture represented, but also will have the chance to see heavy equipment up close. Wednesday evening the event has historically been open to the public, so mark your calendars and plan to attend! For further requirements and details, you can check online at https://secure.osac.state.or.us/listScholarships.aspx. While you’re there, look for other opportunities that fit your plans too! If you see the Stilwell’s when you are out and about, say hello and thank them for their generosity. They wanted to be sure this was sent out so everyone in our program would know about it! Page 13 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op A Super Science Resources Reminder from Oregon 4-H to YOU! The state 4-H staff and the state science leadership team have been busy this past year providing free, easily assessable resources to help counties improve the science in their 4-H youth development programs. All of these projects were taken on to address needs you helped us identify in 2011 and 2012. Yes, we DO try to listen! Following is a review of the resources and their locations: There are Science Rich Handbooks developed for eight 4-H project areas. They are each posted on their specific project page accessible from http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/projects. Handbooks are available for Clothing, Dog, Entomology, Foods, Forestry, Geology, Horse, and Horticulture. On the Science, Engineering and Technology page at http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/science-engineering-andtechnology there are additional resources that reach ACROSS 4-H projects. A new fair display which any youth may enter is for Science Investigations. A link to the evaluation sheet shows the components youth must include on the display. There is a PowerPoint posted under Science Inquiry Training entitled “Inquiry for Oregon 4-H Leaders”. This PowerPoint must be downloaded onto your computer to “work” – it is a narrated presentation. You click on the speaker icon on each slide to hear the narration. There are 10 National 4-H Award Winning videos posted that you can use for training in inquiry, again, across project areas. The videos are on an Intro to Science Inquiry, Rocket Stompers, Bee Buzzers, Parachutes, Egg Crushers, Worm Behavior, Animal Color Preference, Farm Animal Health, Fabric Dyeing and Milk Magic. As you plan your 2013 programs we hope you will use these resources and find them useful. Page 14 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Page 15 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Junior Leaders and Teen Council As a reminder to the many youth that are acting in a leadership capacity out in the county please make sure we know you are doing so, check in with the office and make sure we have you marked as a junior leader on your enrollment form. We know there are many of you that are very active leaders in your 4-H clubs and we want to be sure you are recognized for your service. Also this allows you to then be a part of the Teen Council which is open to 9th-12th grade 4-H members. The role that the Teen Council will play is set by you and for you so please take the opportunity. Leadership is a wonderful trait to build within yourself and 4-H members are excellent at being leaders in the community as 4H youth and giving back as adults. Teen Council meetings will be held the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm at the Extension Office and monthly through May. Congratulations Are In Order We welcome Leslie Allen and Jessica Criss to the 4-H Executive Council as our two youth representatives for this year. This is a great opportunity to gain insight into what makes the 4-H program work from the Leaders’ perspective, how decisions are made, and also to gain valuable leadership experience that looks awesome on résumés and applications! Welcome to the Council, Leslie & Jessica! Revised Horse Contest Guide The PNW Horse Contest Guide (formerly PNW 574) has been revised and is now available only online. The Oregon 4-H Horse Advancement Program publication was also new in October so if you are in the Horse project area, make sure you have the correct version of these publications in particular. Page 16 January/February 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op The goal of the Western Region 4-H Leaders’ Forum 2013 is to provide training opportunities for adults and teens that serve youth in our communities. The workshops at the WRLF 2013 will inspire and enable adults and youth to gain a better understanding of themselves, others, and their world as we continue to Strive for Excellence. Developing life skills will help participants grow and become more capable contributors to 4-H families, clubs, and communities. The workshops should emphasize leadership, communication, science, technology, and cultural experiences. Activities will focus on, but are not limited to, looking at different aspects of our lives in an experiential, hands-on format. Go to the Kulia I Ka Nu’u website for more information at: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/wrlf/ After the annual Western Region Forum, participants can be part of local training. Volunteers can share an idea for clubs or counties to consider, distribute a lesson plan, make a connection to a website, and/or encourage others to get involved in new ways. Through February 21, 2013 the registration fee is: $375. After February 22, the registration fee is $425. To register for the conference, you will need your hotel confirmation code from the Marriott Waikiki Beach. Due to conference costs, there will be a $400 surcharge for participants who choose to stay at a different hotel. In 2015, the Oregon 4-H Program will host the Western Region Leaders’ Forum in Portland! If time & travel have been a hurdle to your attendance at these forums in the past, 2015 will be the year for you!
