Jed’s Journal Well everyone once again we have made it through a Klamath County winter! It seems to have been on the mild side so beware we could end up having a lingering long spring season as I know we can all remember last year’s Junevember type weather. With spring time and increasing daylight hours keeps a watchful eye out on your animal friends as the sugars increase in that nicely greening up grass. Also on the side of academics this time of year I know you all will be getting that bug to be outside doing things and not so into your schoolwork, we all know that happens this time of year. That being said please remember that you get out of your education what you put into it, so pay attention and do quality work all the way through it will really help you in the long run. For those doing spring sports of any kind good luck to you and may it be a fruitful season indeed! As we move forward keep in mind that summer will be here before we know it. Keep in mind the opportunities that summer brings with it such as OSU Summer Conference and State Fair. We would love to see many of you exhibit at the State Fair this year; it is really a great time. I certainly have a great many fond memories of my days at State Fair as a youth and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. You all take care and I look forward to seeing you around as we have workshops and other events around the county in the coming months. Brittany Williams, student worker in Extension Administration, Collegiate 4-H National Action Board Chairman, and former 4-H State Ambassador for Klamath County, was awarded a summer internship with the Citizen Washington Focus (CWF) program. CWF is a week-long 4-H citizenship program for youth that takes place at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center, just one mile from the Washington, DC border. Brittany will spend the summer as a program facilitator and tour guide for the 4-H youth groups that come to Washington, DC. Congratulations, Brittany! Page 3 March/April 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Forty Shorties club By : Emma Gnech The Forty Shorties traveled to Cloverdale, California for the Cloverdale Citrus Fair. Baylee Rogers, Hanna Gnech and Emma Gnech all participated in the pygmy goat show held February 16th and 17th. After traveling all night the three Triad students took care of our animals and went to bed at midnight. We started showing Saturday the 16th at 10:00 am. All three girls did well in showmanship with Baylee placing 6th, Hanna placing 5th, and Emma placing 4th. Emma's goat "Krimp" was named "Best Wether" for the Junior show. After the Junior show we participated in the first "Open Show.” The highest anyone placed was 2nd; that was Baylee and Dream. On Sunday, Emma won her showmanship class. We learn a lot about hard work and sportsmanship when we go to goat shows. It is hard to compete against your friends. Someone always wins and someone always loses. You can do everything right and you still get the gate (when the judge asks you to leave without even placing you). Our motto is "on to the next show." Page 4 March/April 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Page 5 March/April 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Summer Conference Even though it is just the end of March it is not too early to be planning for OSU Summer Conference. This is a wonderful event filled with fun and opportunity. Over 300 of your 4-H peers will be there sharing their experiences and ideas. There is a little bit of everything on the list of things to do at the conference from handicrafts to full-fledged tours of logging sites or the coast. Registration materials will likely be posted as early as April so stay in touch with the Extension Office for details when that becomes available. The conference registration is usually in the neighborhood of $250 including your bus fair to and from and all meals while at the conference. That might seem like a lot of money, but rest assured that if you start working on fundraising now you will have the money by the time you arrive. Jed applied for and was awarded $500 towards your expenses for Summer Conference this year so fundraising has already begun; see if you can match or exceed his efforts in fundraising this year! Talent Show Participants must attend the “4-H Has Talent” class on Thursday. May enter as an individual or a team of up to eight members. Participants must bring all props and supplies required for their performance. Only a CD player will be provided. All performances need to be less than five minutes since the major focus of the 4-H Talent Show is entertainment. Youth are encouraged to select music for piano and/or instrumentals that is entertaining. Youth who opt to perform classical numbers may need to do only one movement or part in order to fit in the time requirement. Categories: Variety - this category is for dramatic and/or comedy readings, magic demonstrations, and other unique talent presentations. Dance – ballet, jazz, tap, square dancing, etc. Vocal – Solo or group singing act Instrumental Page 6 March/April 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op 4-H Ambassador Program The 4-H Ambassador program is for older youth who are interested in leadership roles, public relations, and promoting 4-H in their communities and across the state. There are two levels to the program: County Ambassadors and State Ambassadors. Youth can apply to be a county ambassador when they are in the 8th grade or higher. Many counties have their members attend the Ambassador Training session at Summer Conference while some provide their own training. County Ambassadors provide leadership in their counties. They might emcee awards ceremonies, assist in planning a county-wide community service event, organize clinics, or help with junior leader trainings. The possibilities are endless! Youth can apply to be a State Ambassador when they are in the 9th grade or higher. Applicants are interviewed at Summer Conference, and the selected team is announced at the closing program. The primary responsibilities of State Ambassadors are public relations and promoting the 4-H program. State Ambassadors help at events such as 4-H State Fair, the Oregon Leaders Forum, and Summer Conference, often serving on planning committees. They are expected to speak to other groups about 4-H, complete a project (with the guidance of their county agent), and post regularly on the Oregon 4-H Facebook page. State Ambassador applications are due in the state office by June 1, 2013 - so interested youth need to contact us several weeks in advance! Applicants must attend Summer Conference for a training session and an interview. Page 7 March/April 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Page 8 March/April 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Page 9 March/April 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op History Each state in western United States is assigned a year to host the Western Region (4-H) Leaders’ Forum (WRLF) for adult and teen 4-H volunteers. The Forum is scheduled from a Thursday afternoon through a Sunday noon. Participants exchange great ideas for club/county programming, attend workshops to gather resources and practice skills, become inspired by motivational speakers, see new sites and meet new people! It is great opportunity to learn, grow, travel, and have FUN with Oregon 4-H friends. Volunteers in Oregon Today: 2013- 2015 Volunteer committees are forming now. The Oregon 4-H Program will host the WRLF in Portland. You can help determine the theme and logo. One Oregon volunteer will receive a voucher for the amount of a free registration (approximate $300 value) to attend the 2015 WRLF. A professional artist will develop the theme idea into a logo to use on websites, banners, shirts, print materials, presenter gifts, and more. (Your artwork for the theme idea is welcome, but not necessary.) If your proposed theme idea is selected, but the words are changed, then the voucher will be for 75% of the cost of the registration fee. A team of up to three (3) volunteers can submit an idea, and each person listed on the original submission can receive a voucher worth 75% of the registration fee if that idea is selected. Volunteers of ALL AGES are welcome to participate! Creative ideas are welcome from parents and neighbors of current 4-H volunteers too! The discount voucher(s) can be passed to someone else in 2015 as needed. And up to three (3) creative ideas can be submitted by an individual or team. The 4-H Name & Emblem is a highly valued mark within our country’s history. As such, it was granted a very unique and special status; it is in a category similar to the Presidential Seal and the Olympic Emblem. This federal protection makes it a mark into and of itself with protection that supercedes the limited authorities of both a trademark and a copyright. As a result, responsibility and stewardship for the 4-H Name & Emblem were not given to the U.S. Patent Office but were given to a higher level of the federal government, a member of the Cabinet, the Secretary of Agriculture. The Secretary has responsibility for the 4-H Name and Emblem, at the direct request of Congress. The “18 USC 707” is the statement in the United States Code that outlines the protection of the 4-H Name & Emblem.
