Jed’s Journal
Spring has sprung! Also we are rapidly nearing the end of the
school year for 2013! Congratulations to all of the graduating seniors
of Klamath County, and I hope that your future is a bright and bountiful
one good luck and set your goals high. This also means that it is about
that time of year that everyone gets extremely busy with project work
with our animals, crops, constructions whatever your project might be.
I know from experience here that all of your projects will be top notch
by August this year, however if you have questions along the way that
we might be able to help you with do not hesitate to pick up the phone
or shoot us an email.
Next item of business from me this time around is that I will be
out of the office from May 27 through June 14, 2013 as my daughter
comes into this world. I will intermittently check my email and of
course if there is something along the line of an emergency many of
you have my cell number and I could be reached that way. For normal
business through this period of time please refer to Misty Buckley or
Willie Riggs with questions or information requests.

Pre-Fair Record Book Check
Once again this year’s record books will be a requirement for
participation in county fair. Keeping accurate records of your 4-H
project work is an essential element in the process of experiential
learning in all areas of 4-H programming. The skills you learn through
record keeping will benefit you greatly throughout life. Record books
for 2013 must be checked off at the extension office prior to County
Fair. You may have your record books checked at any time throughout
the day July 8-25, 2013. The preference would be for record books to
be brought in by club with no more than a 24 hour turnaround time.
Jed or Yegor can check your books. Without prior arrangement no late
submissions will be allowed which would result in forfeiture of County
Fair Participation. Also please note to be checked off your records must
be in hard copy format only, no thumb drives or disks.

Summer 4-H Intern
Again, this summer we will have an intern. Yegor Berdyugin is currently
a student at OIT where he is studying Health Information Technology.
We anticipate that Yegor will be very capable of working with the 4-H
enrollment & fair databases, his focus will be on data entry & reporting
for fair entries.
Yegor speaks fluent English, although his native language is Russian.
He tutors students in Excel and is adept with computers with
experience in computer programming, databases, and troubleshooting.
Yegor will start on June 17 and will work with Misty that week, getting
up to speed with our software and procedures.
Yegor is very eager to learn about 4-H and the fair, so please give him a
very warm 4-H welcome when you meet him!
Congratulations, Graduates!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who'll decide where to go.
~Dr. Seuss
Congratulations to all 4-H members who are graduating this year. We
wish you safe celebrations and safe travels as you enjoy your summer,
move out of town for summer employment or to begin your time at
college.
We trust that your years in 4-H have given you experiences that will
serve you well wherever life may take you. Further, we hope that you
will consider staying with the 4-H program as an adult volunteer leader.

County Fair Premium Program Change
4-H and FFA community of Klamath County please note the changes
being made to the premium money program for the 2013 Klamath
County Fair and into the future. Effective this year the premium
program is discontinued in the historic sense upon discussion and
agreement between the Klamath County Leaders Association, the
Klamath County Fair Board and OSU KBREC 4-H. The monies that you
have traditionally been awarded for your placement ribbons will now
be applied to the judge’s contracts in an effort to reach a level of parity
with other counties. In doing this you all are still receiving a very large
gift from the Klamath County Fair Board.
Call to Action: Club Leaders and Members please
compose a well thought out and written thank you for
the Klamath County Fair Board for all of the many things
they do to support the 4-H program and all that takes
place at the Fairgrounds. They need to know that we all
appreciate what they do. Please send all of them to the
Klamath County Fairgrounds office 3531 S. Sixth Street,
Klamath Falls, OR 97603.
Club Changing Policy
Just a reminder that the time for switching clubs for 2013 has come to
a close if you have had that in mind. The deadline for changing clubs is
May 1 of each year. Individual cases can be discussed however as a rule
there will be no club switching after this date.

Financial Literacy Workshop
4-H and FFA members of Klamath County we cordially invite you to the
upcoming Youth Producers Financial Literacy Program. I truly believe
this will be a very beneficial program to 4-H and FFA members and your
families as you financially prepare for college/higher education.
This program will be presented by Meredith Hoffman, Financial Advisor
with Edward Jones Investments. This educational program will focus on
following topics:
Goal setting related to financial planning
Strategies for creating a budget
The difference between FDIC bank products and uninsured
investment options
Differences between bank products (checking accounts, money
market accounts, CD’s)
Oregon 529 College Savings Program and other college savings
programs
Appropriate college saving steps for age of child
Please encourage your members to come as a family, as saving for
college/higher education is a family affair! There will be a breakout
session which will be specially tailored to parents and older youth.
Although this program is specifically targeted to youth producers who
sell an animal at the 4-H and FFA Market Sale, all 4-H members are
invited.
If you have any questions about
this educational opportunity please
do not hesitate to contact Jed at
541-883-7131.

Livestock Auction Pictures for 2013
4-H and FFA Exhibitors for the Klamath County Fair 2013 here is your
first notice of a change being made to the schedule and flow of county
fair. New for this year we are asking all clubs to do a club photo shoot
(digital) of your livestock and small animal project pals and submit the
pictures for the sale order and sales cards. We are going to give this a
try for 2013 to see if it can speed up the process at weigh-in and give
you a chance to have your animal set up just right for your pictures.
This applies to everyone with a market project for this year. Please have
these pictures submitted in electronic format no later than July 22 to
Misty Buckley at [email protected] or Jed Smith at
[email protected].
Also, please remember that these pictures go on the sale cards that
many buyers display at their places of business. You have a lot of time
now, so put some thought and effort into submitting a photo that any
buyer would be proud to show off!
Sale Order for 2013:
1. Poultry
2. Beef
3. West/Watters/Buchanan Scholarship
4. Rabbits
5. Sheep
6. Turkey

Teen Council News
The final line of our 4-H pledge states, “I pledge... my hands to better
living for my club, community, country, and my world.” We, as young
4-H ambassadors, need to put those words into action. On June 1st,
from 10:00am to 12:00, we have that opportunity. Many of our parks in
the Klamath Falls region need to be cleaned up for the coming
summer; so a group of 4-Hers, led by our very own Teen Executive
Council, are coming together to volunteer to clean up Moore Park. The
group is meeting at Moore Park in the lake-side parking lot under the
covered picnic area. Bring gloves and a rake, if you have one. Please
join the Teen Executive Council help our community by honoring the
pledge we recite.
To let the Council know you will be attending this wonderful
opportunity; or to receive more information, call or text Teen Council's
Secretary Jessica at 541-591-6266.

Activate Oregon
Youth voices are needed in every Oregon
community. Join us Friday, November 22 –
Sunday, November 24, to be a part of ACTIVATE
OREGON. The registration fee will be kept low,
but program fun and active learning will be
cranked up high!
Activate Oregon will be held at the Oregon 4-H Center, located just
northwest of Salem. Teen alumni are part of the planning,
implementing and teaching team for Activate Oregon. Teams of youth
and at least one adult are invited to learn and apply skills to help youth
voices to be heard across Oregon.
Activate Oregon will provide a minimum of 16 hours of learning and
application that addresses Oregon graduation standards for 4-H
members and their friends in the 8th grade through high school,
including many opportunities for public speaking about issues that
matter to them and their community, youth discussion to frame and
organize concerns about a health concern, networking with other
young adults, having fun in small groups and large groups, interacting
with community decision-makers, and, creating a written plan for using
their “youth voice.”

Misty Says Goodbye
I will be leaving the Klamath Basin Research & Extension Center office
next month. My last full-time day will be June 7; I will be back on a
limited basis the week of June 17-21 to train the new intern. I really
have appreciated the opportunity to work here with so many talented
professionals, volunteers, and youth. I have had the pleasure to meet
so many people associated with numerous positive things happening in
our county so it was a tough decision to leave; however, after much
thought, I feel it is the right choice.
I congratulate those members who are graduating and I wish all
members the best of luck as you wrap up school in the next few weeks
and as your 4-H projects start to come to fruition over the summer.
Don’t forget to give gracious thanks to the adults who make it possible
for you to do what you do. More than likely, I will continue to see
many of you at 4-H events I’ll be attending with my children.
For most of you who have been with the program during the last four
years, you might have noticed that my e-mail signatures usually contain
a quotation so with this in mind, I’ll leave you with this thought: “Don't
judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you
plant.” - Robert Louis Stevenson
