Klamath County 4-H Enrollment Here’s the skinny on the enrollment deadlines for this year! Friday, November 1: Returning Leader enrollments due Thursday, December 5: Returning Member enrollment deadline Thursday, January 2: New Member enrollment deadline The enrollment fee is remaining at $30/member with a $60/household maximum. New this year is the $10 leader enrollment fee, which does not apply to the household maximum. (Please see the bottom of the current page for more information.) Re-enrollment packets are available online, and members should be hearing from their leaders soon to confirm enrollment for the upcoming year. As a courtesy to your clubs, please don’t wait until the last day to enroll so that the leaders know if they have room to accept new members or not. We hope there are not issues with late enrollments this year as each person has more than two months’ notice of the deadlines! Message for parents in the new 4-H year Parents can also be 4-H leaders, this is not new; but many parents do not take advantage of this opportunity, or don’t feel comfortable with the role, or for whatever reason they just choose not to. However, as we make a fresh start we would just like to remind everybody that this can take some of the burden off of the main club leaders and help keep more parents in the loop. Additionally, enrolled 4-H leaders have voting privileges in the 4-H Leaders Association meetings which is a direct link to helping steer the decisions that are made and the direction of the local programming. It’s simple to get the process started so please contact us if you are interested in becoming one of our valued volunteers! The cost to enroll as a leader is $10, $1 ($2 for horse leaders) covers the accident insurance premium, and the balance is a mandatory donation to the Klamath County Leaders’ Association. This is a new policy that was instituted Fall 2012. Page 10 September/October 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Leaders Association Leadership As comes fall so comes the time for new leadership within the Klamath County Leaders Association. Shortly, after that date the ballots will be available via Survey Monkey, and we will send the link via email and social media, e.g. Facebook & KBREC website. September/October 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Jed’s Journal Fall is finally upon us all once again! I am not sure about all of you but certainly for me fall is my favorite season of the year and always has been. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that hunting season is a part of that mix, or “back in the day” it was also football for me. I know that all of you 4-H members are now back in school and diligently working at being star scholars, so good luck to you this school year with all of your many pursuits. County Fair and State Fair are both behind us all now, and many congratulations to everyone for your quality work on projects and educating our youth throughout the year. Everyone represented the best of Klamath County in all Fair related works this year. Remember that the next step in the 4-H calendar of events is to finish up your project records for the record book contest! The judges and myself really enjoy seeing your hard work put into the pages of those books, and the many stories you all share with us of your past year. Once October rolls into plain view remember it will be time to start considering what new projects you will be taking on as a 4-H member, parent, or volunteer and to get signed up as early as possible. One other thing to watch for in the month of October and possibly the first part of November is the “big move” from our current Extension Office that you are all familiar with on Vandenberg road to our soon to be new headquarters on Washburn Way at our Research Station. We will now truly be a one stop shop for those seeking Extension support or direct from the field agricultural research! Our new auditorium/classroom and conference room space is quite nice and indeed an upgrade from our current facility. We look forward to introducing you all to our new home! Page 27 September/October 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op INTRODUCTIONS ARE IN ORDER! Hi Folks, I like to take an opportunity to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about myself. I’m Sophia Carroll, and I am the new support staff person for 4-H. Some of you I’ve met already, but most of you I have not. I was born and raised in the Applegate Valley of Southwestern Oregon, long before the vineyards came in. I went to Hidden Valley High School and Southern Oregon University and am proud to be a native Oregonian. For the past 18 years I have been working at Southern Oregon University, but in 2012 I married a freight train conductor with BNSF. And while I attempted to commute to Ashland on a daily basis, after two winters I learned a job closer to home would ease my stress. So here I am. I share my home with my wonderful husband, 3 cats, a ball python, and our 5 month old puppy, and I have a daughter who will graduate from Portland State University in June, 2014. I’ve lived in the Klamath Basin for 2 years, and I’m happy as a clam to be working for KBREC and Klamath County 4-H. Now on to the issue of my name. Some of you call me Pam or Pamela because that’s what my email says. But that is because OSU insists I use my first name; however, I prefer my middle name, Sophia and will always refer to myself as such, and I hope you will too. That’s pretty much a snapshot of me. I hope to meet all of you as time goes on. Come by and meet me; I’m in the office Monday-Thursday. ~Sophia Page 3 September/October 2012 Klamath Clover Co-Op State Fair Congratulations! A Note From Teen Council How do we as 4-H members “make the best, better”? It’s easy! Invite your friends to join 4-H this year, or maybe you could join a different club to branch out. There are the common 4-H animal projects such as Beef, Swine, Sheep, Small Animal, even Dog or Cat clubs! You don’t have to have an animal to join 4-H. There are many non-animal projects as well, such as Archery, Shooting Sports, or clubs such as Kitchen Knightmares, Mouse Pads, and Sew What. Inviting a friend to 4-H will make the whole year more enjoyable for everyone. If you are interested in joining a new club, or bringing a friend to 4-H, contact the Extension Office for more information. Page 6 September/October 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Record Book Contest Youth and Leaders If you wish to submit your 4-H record book for judging and awards for 2013 the due date to the extension office is Friday, October 4, 2012 by the close of business (12:00pm) to the Extension office. Leaders and Superintendents Record book judging will take place October 7th-9th from 4:30pm until 7:00pm each evening or until the books are completed whichever comes first. From each division we will need three judges to score the books (you may be asked to judge outside your division on a limited basis) so that the process is as efficient and expedient as possible. Please contact Jed Smith with the names of your division representatives prior to the time of judging. Training will be conducted the first night of judging. Page 8 September/October 2013 Klamath Clover Co-Op Junior Livestock Auction Review A big THANK YOU to all of our exhibitors who in turn became our livestock sellers and to all of you in the community who purchased an animal or donated in some way. The youth, volunteers, parents, faculty and staff of the Klamath County 4-H and FFA programs are very lucky to have your strong support. The youth of Klamath County this year put into circulation more than 26 tons of high quality protein into the market, both local and regionally. That is quite an impressive number for a youth livestock sale in modern times. This further translates into just over $460,000 in gross revenue associated with the Youth Livestock Auction. Gratitude is also due to the wonderful people of the Klamath County Rotary Club and the great folks at Washington Federal for all of the time and expertise you put into this sale. Also a warm thank you to Mr. Stan Dupree and his team that do such a fine job of auctioneering ensuring the very best outcome for all of our youth. Following are the average prices per pound per species for the sale this year: Animal, Weight Total and Average $/Lb Beef 76,360 $3.08 Turkey 104 $18.38 Swine 27,948 $5.53 Rabbit 24 $68.33 Sheep 10,236 $6.44 Poultry 8 $55.00 Goat $8.17 1,298 Rotary Livestock Loan Program For all who are planning on raising a large livestock animal for the coming 2013-2014 4-H year be aware that there is indeed a loan program offered by our Klamath County Rotary Club to aid in the purchase and or feeding and care of your animal. The club has a large pool of money that they are willing to assist in your project with and they love to see the funds utilized.
