Jed’s Journal
Well gang here we are smack dab in the middle of winter and we
have very little in the way of precipitation to show for it. I hope
you all are thinking forward to where and what to purchase as
forage and feed resource for your project animals this year, as
prices may increase with increased demand. The really nice side
of this unusual weather we have been having this winter is that it
tends to be pretty gentle on your critters so they can grow!
I would also like to mention again here that our own Amanda
Blodgett has been appointed to the Klamath County Fair Board
for this next term. Amanda has been and continues to be an integral part of our 4-H program and is taking it to the next level
with this new position. Thank you Amanda and family for all
you have done and continue to do for us all!
In related news to the Fair Board, that group has let us know already what the 2014 judges contracts will be as well as what the
premium program will be. For this year our premiums will be
afforded to all classes that have been premium in the past with
the exception of market classes as there is a major potential for
income with a market project. Please be sure and thank the Fair
Board for making this possible for your program, you can send
them correspondence through the Klamath County Fairgrounds
office.
Take care, stay warm, and see you around the County!!
Klamath Clover Co-Op
Newsletter Online
and Print Editions
Changes are coming to the Klamath Clover Co-Op Newsletter. Traditionally the Clover has focused on events, trainings, general information and deadlines and was mailed bimonthly. But things often came
up mid-cycle, yet was important enough to spread the news. So we’ve decided to mix it up a little.
Starting with last month’s December edition, we now have a monthly
online edition that will be sent via email and will be posted on Facebook on
or around the 15th of the month. The online edition will include training
announcements, deadlines, etc. And then quarterly—the months of January, April, July and October—we will do a print version, which will include
Jed’s Journal and a collection of works from the online edition. The print
edition will be mailed to each 4-H household, one per home.
We encourage clubs and individuals to submit photos and articles. However the submission date is now the 5th of the month. Please submit articles
electronically to Sophia at [email protected] .
State 4-H Scholarships
Information on 2013 State 4-H scholarships and
County/State 4-H Fair scholarships has been
updated and is now available at http://
oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/oregon-4hscholarships. We encourage members who are
heading to college in fall 2013 to apply!
Applications must be approved and signed by county 4-H agents; to meet
this requirement applications must be turned into our office no later than
February 20, 2013.
Fair Dates for 2014
Yes, it’s true, Fair dates have been changed for 2014. The Klamath County
Fair will be August 13-17, 2014. Horse fair is August 7-10, 2014. We know
you realize this was NOT our decision. But it is something we must live
with.
We do understand this brings up many concerns, especially for our
members wanting to participate at State Horse Fair and Klamath County
Fair. So we are asking for you to please submit your concerns in writing to
Sophia at [email protected] . We are hoping that can
brainstorm ways to lessen the stress and provide as many opportunities to
our youth members as possible. But please understand that these are the
dates will we have to live with for the foreseeable future.
We are also pleased to announce that
4-H Leader, Amanda Blodgett has been
appointed to the Klamath County 4-H
Board. Congratulations, Amanda! We
couldn’t be more thrilled.
Rotary Livestock Loan Program

the coming 2013-2014 4-H year be aware that there is indeed a loan

and/or feeding and care of your animal. The club has a pool of money that
they are willing to assist in your project with and they love to see the funds
utilized. For more information regarding this program please call the
extension office at 541-883-7131 or obtain the application at

Recognition Dinner and Program
What to say about the 4-H Recognition Dinner and Awards Program
2013? Certainly first and foremost a very large and resounding THANK
YOU to the Klamath County 4-H Teen Council for hosting the evening.
Also a large thanks to our many sponsors of the event this year, your support made the whole evening possible. There were well over 150 people in
attendance at this years function and everyone involved in the program
loves to see that kind of a turn out. Thank you all that could make the
evening.
We also need a big Thank You to all of the 4-H members, Leaders, and
Families that make the program what is in Klamath County. The 4-H program simply could not perform at the level it does without the many of
you all contributing heart, soul, time and talent into the program. It is your
influx of knowledge and personal touch that continues to make
4-H
one of the strongest youth organizations in the country. You all are the life
-blood of the program and the staff of OSU KBREC extends our most
appreciative Thanks to you all!
And next time you visit the following establishments, thank them for their

We Moved!
Even though the move and new address has been previously discussed in this
addition of the newsletter we at KBREC want to make sure you have the information multiple ways and times. The new address for OSU Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center (KBREC) is 6923 Washburn Way, Klamath Falls,
OR 97603. We are moved in and ready for business, please feel free to come by
just to check things out.
We still have meeting facilities available for use on site, though slightly reduced
in size they are quality meeting facilities. Available for use we have the Learning
Center which consists of two rooms. The largest being the classroom ,or what at
the other site would have been the auditorium, and the smaller space will still be
known as the conference room just as it was in our previous location.
Please when reserving these spaces pay close attention to how many people will
be in attendance and book the rooms accordingly, we wish to be efficient with
our space as do you. To reserve the rooms you will still need to call the office at
541-883-7131 and schedule a time and date, and you will need to come in within
24 hours of use to check out a key to the facility and sign a KBREC Room Rental Agreement, which will be kept on file. This key must be dropped in the Lock
Box in the Learning Center at the conclusion of your meeting or workshop.
Come by and check things out!
Leadership Fees for 2014
As you all are learning as volunteers this year with the Klamath County 4-H
Youth Development Program there is now a $10 leader enrollment fee. Depending on what project you are associated with i.e. horse, or nearly all others
there is either a $2 or $1 insurance fee associated with being a volunteer. The
remainder of the $10 being collected goes back into the Klamath County 4-H
Leaders Association for use towards awards, event scholarships (youth and
adult), and various other operating expenses associated with the operation of
the non-profit group. The increased fee was voted into being last Spring 2013
by the Executive Council of the Klamath County Leaders Association, it was
not instituted by OSU or KBREC staff. As a volunteer should you wish to
change this fee structure please speak with your Executive Council, they meet
each month and you are welcome to be a guest to the meeting and be heard.
Please understand this $10 charge was not to “make” money, but rather to replace dollars that have gone out for many years and never been replenished. If
you have suggestions to the Leaders Association and how they might fundraise
to a greater capacity again please share your thoughts with them.

West-Watters-Buchanan
Scholarship needs help!
For many of the older youth with livestock in our local 4-H and FFA
programs, the West-Watters-Buchanan Scholarship is known as one of the
largest scholarships not only for the initial amount typically granted to
deserving recipients, but also because the scholarship has historically
included the option for an annual renewal opportunity. Typically the largest
fundraiser of the year occurs at the Klamath County Fair Rotary Junior
Livestock Auction; this year, the amount raised was markedly reduced
which leaves the scholarship fund in the position of potentially not being
able to continue giving at the level they have in the past.
You can help! If you or a business you know of is in a position of being
able to make a contribution, tax-deductible donations in any amount can be
made to the West-Watters-Buchanan Scholarship fund and can be sent to
our office at 6923 Washburn Way, Klamath Falls, OR 97603.
