Jed’s Journal Well Klamath County 4-H Family this note is my final message to you all as your County Agent. It has been an amazing and wonderful experience these past 6 ½ years as your 4-H Agent here in Klamath County. You have all been a great group of youth and adults to work with and alongside. I will forever have many fond memories of my time here with you all. The youth of this county have such an amazing group of volunteer leaders and parents that support this program so whole heartedly, I truly hope all of you 4-H and FFA members realize what you have here. This program really is a giant family and the feats that have been accomplished in my time here are a testament to the power of you all and your positive effect on the community. There are a couple of critter concerns on the horizon at present that you all do need to be aware of and trust in your agents, staff members, and superintendents on these things and the decisions that will have to be made. The first and largest concern right now is of course the Swine PEDv that is going around the nation. This is bad stuff for sure, and your superintendent and leaders have a plan to protect all of your swine, again trust in them. The “good” thing about this bug is that it is NOT transmittable to humans or other species. The other bio-hazard that is somewhat of a yearly occurrence in the west is that of the Equine herpes strain. There has been one confirmed case in Lane County already this year, but this is treatable and the veterinarians around the state are able to diagnose and correct this one. I can also assure you as we all move forward that Willie Riggs our region 6 administrator will be working with the 4-H program leaders to make sure you have a 4-H faculty member here and up and running soon. You also have Sophia who is here to help and you are lucky to have someone as professional and helpful as her on staff here. Trust in these folks as well as the rest of the staff at OSU KBREC they all have your best interests at heart an in their practice. My wife Lindsey, baby daughter Addalee and I will be moving to the Willamette Valley as my new job is up there. We hope to see you around whether it be up there somewhere or down here around County Fair perhaps. Thank you for all that you have done for us! We wish you all the very best! Jedediah D. Smith SPRING SWINE WEIGH-IN CANCELED By a unanimous vote, swine leaders opted to suspend the swine spring weigh-in this year. The Klamath County bill of sale is still required to be turned in along with any needed out of state vet records and a $5 fee by noon on May 31. The logistics of how the pigs will be ear tagged and receive their Ivomec will be worked out at the next swine leaders meeting May 19th. We will be sure keep you apprised of the situation, so stay tuned. Congratulations to Brielle McKinney! She is the recipient of the Oregon 4-H Foundation Scholarship. You go, Girl! Best of luck with your future plans! L.A. West-Watters-Buchanan Scholarship Deadline: May 15, 2014 Candidate must have been a Klamath County resident for a minimum of 4 years and have participated in 4-H or FFA for minimum of 4 consecutive years with a market project in beef, sheep, swine, goat or small animal. http://oregonstate.edu/dept/kbrec/4-h-recognition-scholarships My name is Hannah Speegle, and this June I have been given the amazing opportunity to travel to Japan for an eight week foreign exchange program. My first four weeks I will be in Tokyo attending language school there, working on learning Japanese. After I complete the first four weeks of my program, I join another 4-H exchange and spend my last four weeks with another host family learning everything about the Japanese culture. 4-H has presented my with this amazing cultural exchange program, and I can’t wait to leave at the end of the school year! I really can't seem to stop thinking about how crazy awesome it's going to be there. It's been an amazing journey just getting ready for my exchange, it is completely unreal, and breathe taking, to think that my journey is really just beginning! If you would like to follow me as my exchange unfolds, just follow my travel blog, at freedomsearch2014.blogspot.com Klamath County 4-H Invited to Pink Out Night at OIT! OIT’s President Maples vowed he would kiss a pig if mascot Hootie won the CCC’s Mascot Challenge. Hootie did, so on Feb 8th, Merrill Super Swine was invited to bring Admril the pig to OIT. Admril arrived complete with pink painted hooves and an Owl’s shirt that said, “Guess who loves you…” OIT extended a big thank you to the many 4-H organizations/clubs and to Merrill Super Swine for participating. BorderTown 4-H attended a workshop with demo's on feeding, showmanship, grooming meat goats, along with a small show for the youth to practice with their upcoming 4-H meat goats. Fun was had by all those that attended. BorderTown 4-H was represented by Kerri Burt, Hanna and Emma Gnech, Myranda and Allison Edgars, and Jordan Baily. Leaders and parents were there to support our youth. To save paper and postage, we have reduced the size of fliers for events outside the county. Can you believe it’s that time again already? And this year is bringing lots of change, from new fair dates to new extension employees. We thought it might be helpful to offer some deadlines and important dates that you can hang on the fridge. Please keep in mind that as a new agent comes on he or she may want to tweak dates just ever so slightly, but the below dates will be really good starting point. And as always we will keep you updated. May 1: Horse ID Page due to Extension Office July 3: 4-H/FFA Exhibition Entries and Exhibition Agreement deadline. July 7-10: Record Book Check July 10: Photo for Auction Sales Cards. Clubs will be taking their own photos again this year. Photos are due to the office July 10th. Leaders were sent some parameters to follow to have a successful photo. We will send those out again as the date gets closer. Or you can always request them from Sophia. July 15: Last date for clubs to request stall cards from the Extension This year we will only create stall cards upon request. So if you’d like stall cards created from ShoWorks, you must request them from Sophia on or before July 15. July 21: All Leaders Meeting. July 22: Clerk Training August 7-10: Horse Fair August 14-17: Klamath County Fair This year there is a very short turn around for Oregon State Fair— plus new staff members at KBREC and KCF—so it’s imperative that we all plan ahead. It will make fair smoother for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation.
