Topic
Introducing Algebraic
Expressions
Students will be able to...




Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for
numbers.
Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor,
quotient, and coefficient).
Evaluate algebraic expressions given a specific value for their variables.
Perform arithmetic in the conventional order of operations.
Instructional videos in the hyperlinks above are meant to support C2.0 content,
but may use vocabulary or strategies not emphasized by MCPS.
The Common Core State Standards require a balance of three fundamental
components that result in rigorous mathematics acquisition: deep conceptual
understanding, procedural skill, and mathematical applications and modeling.

Students will
reason about realworld situations to
write, interpret,
and evaluate
algebraic
expressions.
Students will build
accuracy when
applying the rules for
order of operations
to simplifying
expressions.
Students will apply
the rules for order
of operations to
evaluate
expressions in a
real world context.

devices such as PEMDAS or Please Excuse My Dear Aunt
Sally because they can lead to the misconception that
Addition always be performed before Subtraction and
Multiplication should always be performed before Division.
